Thank you for taking this emotional rollercoaster. My recap: You can travel freely in a Europe w/o borders but the pain of the loss of loved ones travels with you. Follow your dreams and make the ones you love proud. Carry the memories with you but also their lessons. Joost is no joke he is a survivor right through the pain to party on the eurovision stage.

Interestingly Scooter was heavily influenced by DJ Paul Elstak, the guy in the car at the end. Paul was one of the first hardcore DJ's and laid the foundations for happy hardcore. In that sense this is a tribute to a true Dutch cultural thing from the 90's (the hardcore & gabber movement). The text is actually powerful once you listen to it. The song has much more depth than most people will get from it.

He was traveling thru Europe, running from his feelings, but nothing worked for him. Greeve does not go away when you cross the borders. -- Europe is not burning at the end. It is goodbye to the past and going forward to the future.

Thank you for reacting to this video. This is definitely not a political song. It has many layers and takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. The song title is a contraction of Europe + Papa (= father in Dutch). Multiple references to these 2 subjects: 1. He has been an orphan as of a young age (13 yrs old). His father helped refugees and taught him to have an expansive view of the world and that the world is without borders (they were man made). So Joost listened and travels the world (EU in this case), but he can't escape the pain of the loss of his parents. No food ("escargots, fish 'n chips, paella") can make him forget. Also there's a reference to Stromae's song "Papaoutai" ("dad, where are you"). 2. He used to watch Eurovison Song Contest (ESC) with his parents. And he said that one day he would be on that stage performing. His father encouraged him to live life without limits and to go for it. His father taught him to write poetry (his father was a writer) and now Joost writes songs and he has made it to the ESC. All of this leads to "you see, dad, I listened to you". With the burning (of the house, picture, building/mill (his past, growing up in Friesland)) at the end of the video, everything comes full circle. He has made his parents proud and he can accept their passing, his past and move on. In an interview Joost explained: "this song is a letter to my parents..." "I love my parents and they will always be there, but I can't keep carrying this pain.." Understanding his lifestory hopefully helps you to appreciate the song more. ❤ Fun fact: a lot of details in this song come from his other songs: - .."say merci and alsjeblieft", 'ik geef geld, er is niemand die mij helpt" + dance of Japanese girls (clapping under the leg) >> check 'Wachtmuziek' .

This song is definitely partly political. But more in a vague nostalgic way about how his dad is an analogy for a more optimistic belief in a united, borderless Europe that has been slowly dissapearing. There's various hints throughout the music video. The house has a European flag. There's some allusions to both external and internal threats to Europe (spiky figure at beginning, the politician angrily pounding his chest), the visuals of the scooter riding invoke American patriotism, but applied to Europe. To say that there's no politics to the song just because you saw an interview with Joost is a bit naive. Eurovision songs aren't allowed to be political, so he's never going to discuss that openly.

12 points to The Netherlands. The winner of Eurovision 2024. Nostalgia from the 90's. Joost said that he will bring a huge surprise on stage in the finals that will shock the world. This is a masterpiece. Euro papa= Euro dad, because papa is dad in Dutch. A sad song with lyrics with a meaning, with a message, in a happy hardcore melody. A letter to his father who died when he was a 12 year old child. His mother past away a year later. He promised his father that he will be someday on the Eurovision Songcontest stage. His father told him that it is possible because there are no borders between the countries, and no limits to follow his dream. Borders and limitations are made by human. In every country he went, he felt the pain and grief of no having his parents. The fire symbolise letting go of the grief and pain, and the start of a new chapter in his live.

You really got the point when you said “closing a chapter” with his parents. Joost lost both his parents when he was 12 and 13 years old. Since then he’s been struggling with this trauma. He said on a interview that this song can be interpreted as a closure to this sadness, like he’s finally moving on from this trauma. To be honest, most of his songs have really sad lyrics and a happy beat. Also he used to watch Eurovision with his parents when he was young and his dream was to go to Eurovision, so now he’s finally doing it!

Knowing his background stories (lost both parents at a very young age, got depressed and dedicated this song to his father) and being a Dutch native speaker myself, I thought, why not translate Europapa, explaining the deeper meaning of the song (its my personal take on the song and not verified of course (Joost knows) but I think it makes a lot of sense. Have a read: --> Welkom in Europa, blijf hier tot ik dood ga (Welcome in Europe, I'll stay here till I die) Welcome in a world without borders, without constraints. I will never let myself be constricted. --> Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa (Euro-dad-dy, Euro-dad-dy) --> Bezoek m'n friends in France (I visit my friends in France) 'Friends' translated in France is 'Amis' Amis was author of e.g. 'Invasion of the Space Invaders' and 'Money'. Joost didn't visited friends in a country, he identified himself with characters in books. --> Of neem de benen naar Wenen. (or take a walk to Vienna) In Dutch 'de benen nemen' has two meanings. Litterary is means 'to walk', but figuratively it means 'running away' Same counts for 'Wenen'. Translated to English can mean 'the capital of Austria 'Vienna' but can also be translated to 'crying'. So, it can mean 'walk to Vienna' or 'running away to despair' --> Ik wil weg uit Netherlands, maar m'n paspoort is verdwenen (I want to leave the Netherlands, but my passport is gone) I want to run away from my childhood, run away from my pain, but I lost my identity. I don't know who I am anymore, I'm lost. --> Heb gelukkig geen visum nodig om bij je te zijn (I don't need a visa to be with you) There's is nothing what can stop me to be with you, you are in my heart. --> Dus neem de bus naar Polen (So I take the bus to Poland) Besides transportation, a bus is also a conductor. Polen, in Dutch, is the plural of pool. In English poles. So magnetism. With a balance of positive and negative ends. --> of de trein naar Berlijn (or the train to Berlin) First; the Berlin Wall was the symbol of the Cold War and a divided Europe. The fall of the Berlin Wall symbolizes the start of a united Europe. Second; the track 'Friesenjung' of Joost Klein is co-written by his friend, the Berlin rapper Ski Aggu. --> Ik heb geen geld voor Paris, dus gebruik m'n fantasie (I don't have money for Paris, so I use my imagination) Paris is the city of love. But there's no currency in the world that can buy his father back. He only can use his imagination to be reunited with his father --> Heb je een еuro'tje, please? Zеg "merci" en "alsjeblieft" (can you spare a euro, please? Say "merci" en "here you are") Can I have a bit of your wealth, please? In return I will share a bit of my love with you. --> Ik ben echt alles kwijt behalve de tijd (I lost everything, except the time) I lost everything what's important to me (his parents) the only thing that remains is the time he has left in his life, without his father a burden. --> Dus ben elke dag op reis want de wereld is van mij (So I'm travelling every day because the world is mine) He's running, searching, trying to find something. Every day over and over and again in a world where he feels lonely. --> Ich bin in Deutschland, aber ich bin so allein (I'm in Germany, but I'm so alone) The track 'Friesenjung' was a huge hit in Germany. He made it in Germany, but he can't share his successes with the one who is most inportant to him. --> Io sono in Italia, maar toch doet het pijn (I'm in Italy, but it hurts) In his track 'Ome Robert' Joost sings (well actually screams), 'Who are you? I'm a god!'. But even the gods of the Roman empire are not enough to soothen the pain. --> Ben aan het vluchten van mezelf, roep de hele dag om help (I'm running away from myself, call for help the whole day) I don't want to be the person as I am today, don't want to feel the pain anymore. But I can't do this on my own. I need help. Perhaps he asks his dad for help but realizes he is on his own. --> Ja, ik geef zelfs mensen geld, maar d'r is niemand die me helpt (Yes, I even give money to people and organizations, but there's nobody who helps) I need help and I'm willing to share everything I have, but nobody understands my pain, not even the organizations who should have taken care of me. I feel alone and lonely. --> Ik hoef geen escargots, hoef geen fish 'n' chips Hoef geen paella, no, ik weet niet eens echt wat dat is (I don't need escargots, don't need fish 'n' chips. Don't need paella, no, I'm not even sure what it is) I'm not interested in luxury, not interested in traditions, not interested in exotic places. --> Zet de radio aan, ik hoor Stromae met "Papaoutai" (turn on the radio, I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai") I tune in and hear someone in a similiar situation (Stromae lost his father as well) echoing my thoughts ('Papaoutai' means 'Daddy, where are you?') --> Zal niet stoppen, tot ze zeggen: "Ja, ja, dat doet 'ie goed, ey" (Will not stop until they say: "yeah, yeah, he doing a great job, ey") I'm a insecure and will not stop until I got the confirmation that I'm on the right track. That I'm doing a good job. A tab on the shoulder will do. ------------------------------------ And there you have it. Europapa is a masterpiece....

The music and music video format is made in 90s style. The music is 90's Eurodance with Happy Hardcore elements. Happy Hardcore was very popular in the 90s in the Netherlands At the beginning of the song there is a shout. "Europe" ""lets come together" "is now or never" etc. That is a reference to Scooter The piano melody in the chorus when he sings Euro pa pa pa pa pa hey. Is a reference to Charly lownoise Mental Theo who made Happy Hardcore in the 90s. e.g Charly Lownoise and Mental Theo - Your Smile Charly Lownoise and Mental Theo - wonderful days The hard last part of the music is Made by DJ Paul Elstak Who also made Happy Hardcore in the 90's. e.g Dj Paul Elstak - Luv You More Dj Paul Elstak - Rainbow In The Sky He is also in the car in the video. DJ Paul also made Gabber (Hardcore) music. GabberHouse was very big in the Netherlands in the 90s. It was a youth culture that originated in the Netherlands. 1 in 3 young people was Gabber (age 14 - 24). Those young people dancing (Hakkuh) in the video they look like the 90 Gabbers. Bald head or very short hair, Australian (Aussie) training suit, Nike Air Max shoes. Forgot to say. The birds in the beginning of the music video are a reference to "Charly Lownoise and Mental Theo - wonderful days". The original music video for that song also starts with birds in the sky Conclusion the music can't be more Dutch than this

I know you because of your reaction to Nightwish. Really strange to see you react to Joost 😂 Joost is een moderne punker.

Even if this isn't the music you (or me) normally listen to, Joost Klein is special. And I don't mean Josti special or frikadel special. He mixes music with art and I can really appreciate that. He also designs his own suits. Very creative. And yes, this whole song has major nostalgic 90's vibes. I freaking love it. lol. He lost his dad when he was 12 and his mom when he was 13. He used to watch Eurovision with his dad and promised him that one day he'd perform at Eurovision. So for ll those years that has been his dream/goal. With this song he wants to honor his parents, but also close the chapter of pain. Enne, ik zal niemand vertellen dat je aan t hakkuh was. hehehe

This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. When he was younger he watched the Eurovision with his parents and said “I’m gonna sing at Eurovision one day”. Joost sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that it’s a world without borders, because borders are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is gabber music - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, and the sub genre is called happy hardcore. Bringing a personal loss, the feeling of Europe and the dutch culture together; that is art. The lyrics have a lot of layers: Europe let’s come together! It’s now or never! I love you all! Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Visit my friends in France Or take a long walk to Vienna I want to leave the Netherlands But my passport is gone Fortunately don't need a visa To be with you So take the bus to Poland Or the train to Berlin I have no money for Paris So use my imagination Do you have a euro please Say "merci" and "please" I lost everything Except time So am travelling every day For the world is mine Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Eu-ro-pa! Ich bin in Deutschland Aber Ich bin so allein Io sono in Italia but still I feel pain Am running from myself Calling for "help!" all day long Yes I even give people money But there is no one to help me I don't need es-car-gots Don't need fish 'n chips Don't need paella, no I don't even really know what that is Turn on the radio I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai" Won't stop until they say "Yes, yes, he does that very well ey!" Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Welcome to Europe Stay here until I die Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa Eu-ro-pa! Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa…. Welcome in Europe boy! At the end of the day We are all human beings My father once told me It's a world without borders I miss you every day Is what I secretly whisper You see dad I listened to you Is what I secretly whisper You see dad I listened to you

From what I gather it's firstly a personal message. The song conveys the grief and struggles he had after losing both of his parents (hence the "I gave people money, yet nobody helps me"), then touring Europe to get accustomed with other cultures in his quest to overcome his grief. Despite crossing borders, it didn't really help him with his grief (hence the "I don't need escargot or fish 'n chips"), but he did get a newfound appreciation for other cultures. *Tribute* The second part is that it's a tribute to his father, because he and his family always watched Eurovision back when he was young, making him appreciate the festival. Even back then he had a musical ambition, making him announce to his parents that one day he would be standing on that same stage. Since they've both died, he decided to make it a tribute to his parents, often citing that the appreciation for Europe came from what his father told him. This is also shown by the burning picture of his parents and the fire conveys that's how he felt when both of his parents passed away at respectively age 13 and 14 (iirc). It was a panic, like a house on fire. In his case, as a child, that was his whole world, which is depicted by that vision of Europe being on fire. *Europe* The third part of the song depicts his love for Europe as a whole, referring to Germany, Poland, Italy, France and such. *Culture* The fourth part shows his appreciation for The Netherlands, showing the Kinderdijk, the windmills, the culture, but also his musical influences and associations. In the clip you'll see (for instance the singer S10 that represented The Netherlands on Eurovision previously, but also other well-known Dutch people). The guy sitting in the car (when he himself sits on the roof) is DJ Paul Elstak, which was a huge inspiration for his musical direction. You pointing out the similarities to _Scooter_ and _2 Unlimited_ are probably very true, as those were major influencers in music when he was still young. Some people even claimed that this song is kind of an 'introduction into hardcore', as the song starts off as modern pop-music and eventually dissolves into pure hardcore/gabber by the end. In that sense it might even be advocating for more hardcore music. *Political* Now, where it gets muddied is whether it's also a political statement. Because the house on fire can also be depicted as a statement for what's happening in Europe, with Ukraine being the most prominent example, but it can also refer to the constant political conflict in the EU. People also point out that one of the 'aussies' worn by the girl shows the colors of the Ukraine flag, which can be interpreted as a jab to Russia, but can also be interpreted as 'standing together'. After all, you can also make a statement that several of those 'aussies' represent different countries in Europe based on the color schemes. Is this coincidential? I don't think so, but it's so subtle that you _can_ claim that it's not a political statement with valid reasoning, since the theme for the first three points is visible throughout the song's clip. Do keep in mind that Joost Klein started off his career as a KZbinr, making satiric comedy sketches before becoming an actual musician. His background in (and penchant for) satire makes it quite possible that the song is not only a happy-go-lucky song, but also a jab at the European Union as a whole, mental healthcare in The Netherlands and Russia's war against Ukraine. In that sense it's a very ... intelligent combination, without making it blatantly obvious. I hope you can appreciate this breakdown. I don't often comment on these sort of videos, but considering you're Dutch as well, I figured you might appreciate this. *Music* I'm also curious if you've continued to watch/listen to other songs from Babymetal, or whether you've been introduced to Band-maid. The latter isn't particularly metal, but they're a rock-band that does 'borrow' some aspects from both punk and metal at times, making them on occasion a pretty heavy rock band. If you don't know about them, you may want to look for their 'Domination' live performance at some point. And while I'm recommending music, have you ever seen Jinjer with their song Pisces? I reckon you may appreciate that one.

The first time i heard it I thought it was a fun silly song. But when I read the translation and the meaning behind the song, i stared lo like it a lot. React to Norwegian song, Gate - Ulveham. Is problably closer to the theme of your channel.😸

😂😂You can "get down" to that "house" stuff, hey Viking. Actually that was, lyrics interesting too. I think that it could apply to both meanings. Thankyou😃 PS Reading the comments, I see that it was about the loss of his parents.

Well, isn't this the story of our lives? I think Joosts story is especially sad. But we all go thru the same faces. Joost has managed to compress it all in about 3 minutes. This number is a joy of reqonaging, the up's an the down's. The past and the current. For me Joost has won, no matter the outcome of eurovision.

The song is a letter to his parents who died when Joost was still young. His father told him that since humans invented the borders, he could invent the world, his own world. And so he did! The end with the burning picture and house means that it's time to stop grieving about his parents and step into a new phase in his life.

Indeed it's about closing a chapter. But you're the first one that shares the idea of making the analogy with Európe. Both Joost and Europe had their struggle, but to unite ships and bridges (to the past) have to burned. Joost has never mentioned this layer, maybe to avoid political load on the song - i don't know.
