The Netherlands is the 15th richest country in the world by GDP per capita, but it is ranked only 134th by land area. Dutch people are wealthier than those in Germany, Canada, and even the UK. The average monthly salary in the Netherlands is close to 3,000 euros. It is often described as the most democratic, free, and liberal country on the planet, and the protection of human rights is a priority. The Netherlands is considered the best place in the world for children. But how did such a small country, without significant mineral deposits, become one of the world’s wealthiest countries? Let’s discover the reasons for the economic miracle of the Netherlands.

We should invest more in defense. Not by ourselves but as the EU or some kind of European coalition (because getting all 27 members in a military union won't work). If, say, the western half of Europe pooled their resources together, a formidable military could already be created without even increasing spending! Hell if you bring France, the Benelux and Germany together you can already create a small superpower. France and Germany have always been at the forefront of more EU integration, that's why the British didn't get along. Instead we are still stuck at maintaining individual militaries, so almost all European countries have a small shitty army, shitty navy and shitty air force. Yes we're getting like 52 F-35 jets which is pretty good for our size, but our air force cannot operate without being part of a coalition anyway. We also have no air to air fighter jets like the F-22. The F-35 is mainly useful for attacking ground or sea targets. The Dutch army (landmacht) is now integrated into the German army, this is probably a proof of concept and I expect more military unification to happen, with more countries joining in. Could take decades but it will happen. And it will be a good thing. Even now, for us as NL, it makes perfect sense to have a military union with Germany, we have identical defense interests and can pool resources together to defend those interests better and cheaper.

@Altrop I've visited the lovely Netherlands several times, including last Autumn. As an (very anti-Trump) American, I was shocked at how oblivious the Dutch, and Europeans generally, are to the likely collapse of NATO if US political support for "Article 5" whithers/collapses - even if Trump happens to lose to Biden this coming November. The vast bulk of the Republican Party, and numerous prominent Democrats, are disinclined to continue spending so much US taxpayer money for wealthy Europeans who refuse to pay much themselves for their own defense. A rapidly-increasing part of the US electorate finds this situation absurd. Back in 2011, outgoing US Defense Secretary Robert Gates made a very blunt speech at the NATO HQ stating exactly this. It can be found on YYT. Historian/author Anne Applebaum has several insightful YT videos on this topic, as well.

Well.... our forefathers haven't been very nice towards other populations and countries in the rest of the world. We were pirats. And we did a lot in slavery business. So lots of our wealth and prosperity is due to our bad behavior in the past. However, you can say indeed that we work hard nowadays, to keep our standards high. That is true.

There is a lot of distribution of wealth via taxes in the Netherlands. Life is ok. If you want to make it good you need to have some luck and a lot of stamina. But with all ingredients for succes available (good school system, good infrastructure, a wide government with many social programs) the Netherlands is one of the best places to be born or live. It’s a shame that Dutchies are forgetting that more and more themselves. It’s the negative side from living in peace and tranquillity for to long.

You make a good point. Dutch residents do not realise how good their lives are at the bottom compared to other countries. I thought I knew poverty when living in the Netherlands. Then, I moved to England and saw poverty and deprivation on a much much deeper level, like I never personally witnessed before. That poverty exists amongst wealth I've also not personally witnessed before, in London.

Yup 15th by GDP. Now back to the real world - The purchasing power of the fast majority of the Dutch has been steadily declining for over 40 years. There were short lived upticks in income for the bottom 90% but those were few and far between. On top of that the social safety net and health services have eroded tot the point of collaps. One generation ago a single low income used to pay for a family, a house and two holidays a year - while these days two jobs can barely pay the bills. That is if you can even find a house to live in. So the question arises; who exactly benefits from the high GDP that my Netherlands boasts? There is a lot to love and admire about my Netherlands but that should not blind me to the increasing disconnect between its perceived riches and the actual plight of its population.
@CountriesGrowth
@CountriesGrowth 9 ай бұрын
But declining purchasing power is a common problem for well developed countries for the last few decades. You will hear the same statements from US, UK and citizens also. At least you have economic growth, compared to Japan for example. Japan people also have decline in purchasing power but together with economic stagnation for the recent 30 years
@Altrop
@Altrop 8 ай бұрын
Great.. but we are still easily in the top 5% of the entire world regarding wealth and comfort of life. 95% of the world has less purchasing power than the average Dutch person. What you are seeing is partially because the rest of the world is getting relatively richer, so we get poorer. The global pie is only so big and poorer countries are taking a larger piece of it. In all of Europe we are now realizing we need a strong military to protect our trade routes and borders from bad actors. We grew complacent and funneled a lot of money away from the military, not realizing that it was a short term gain, and a strong military buys you long term prosperity. We relied on the US for protection but the US wants us to step up now, rightfully so. If the EU was a strong, united military power, we would have dealt with Russia differently the past 30 years, the war in Ukraine would not have happened and we'd still have cheap energy. Everything would be cheaper because everything costs energy. Just 1 example. Ukraine has enough oil and gas to supply the entire EU, they want to join us and share our values (unlike Russians they are actually very cool and kind people), which is exactly why we should help them as much as possible. Sadly we don't even have the defense industries in place to supply just 1 country with weapons and munitions for a defensive war against a Russian army operating equipment and tactics from last century. Many of us are so pacifist we don't realize peace and prosperity comes from military strength. Carthage was extremely rich but had no military, the much poorer Rome sacked and plundered it. No amount of money to buy mercenaries was able to save Carthage. Some even call to exit the EU which would be devastating. The EU project is amazing, never before have 27 countries with their own cultures opened their borders like that to each other. The project was always started with the intention of keeping the peace, economic growth AND military unity. Eventually the military part will also happen, in a couple decades.

Dutch success started with the Hanseatic League in the middle ages. The trade with the Baltic Sea area became a huge thing and stayed that way over the centuries. Without that trade no VOC would have been possible. At the end the VOC wend bankrupt, it had a limited time span. It was not the end of the Asia trade, but it's importance was much reduced. The VOC economy enabled the Dutch Republic to stay independent (only just in 1672..) for a long time. With the downfall came also later the occupied Napoleontic era and (relatively) poor situation of the 19th century. The real success effecting today came after WO2, which is a collective European success.

So funny that you said this, because I've often thought about moving to the Netherlands, at least for a couple of years, because I am tired of the far left and the insane ideologies/ lack of logic that comes from leftists. I feel like the Netherlands is just less polarized and far more practical than the US has been as of late. I love my country, but it hasn't been a very healthy environment mentally and spiritually for anyone over the course of the last twelve years or so, and I am sure you would agree.

Nice video but a bit of rose tinted glasses being employed. It taxes the heck out of its population and the tendency to squeeze everybody in to an average sized box is annoying. The population density is scary at times. Small and medium enterprises have a very hard time. Off late the government has been very keen to jump on every woke band wagon. Then there is the climate..... I like to come back to visit it from time to time but it is unlikely to be my permanent residence again.

@@Clip_Gallery You wish. The non-binding referendum was about the support of the European Constitution. With I believe a 30% turnout. Yes PVV won the election, but pro EU parties still hold a twothird majority in parliament. People have seen what devastation the leave vote has brought to the UK. They will return within the next 10 years or so, just like the last time they left. But you may dream. However don’t for a minute think that that makes your wish a fact. Now run your victory lap. Let Wilders form his coalition government and see what will come from that.

Unfortunately, I have to temper your enthusiasm a little. The Netherlands has very big problems. Every year, more than 400,000 immigrants come to the Netherlands. There are more than 1,000,000 houses short. The farmers are chased off their land by the government and the fishermen have to scrap their boats. This country is totally destroyed.

Just made quick google: “The Netherlands is just one country, so even though the “s” on the end means the word looks like it should be plural, it is in fact singular. That means that when you're talking about the Netherlands, you use words such as “is” or “has”, not “are”.”

It'[s easy to say that the dutch are rich, but they aren't. There is a lot of poverty, homeless and even people who work 40 hours a week but can't pay their billes. It's just a small percentage where the money sticks. Looks more like Dubai, a small amount of rich people and the rest that keep them rich.
