Wow! Changes in key, time signature, melody, tempo, rhythm-- as massive a rearrangement as her rearrangement of "The Star-Spangled Banner." On the surface, it may very much seem like the same song Debby Boone sang just with some vocal runs added, but musically, it's totally, totally, totally not the same song, not at all. This is my favorite song of hers, before she started to lose her voice. She'd always wanted to record this and it's a masterpiece, but I think it's still one of her lesser known songs as beautiful as it is. I hope that Glennis Grace will record it. I'm sure she did! It's just that her personal life was filled with far too much hurt and drama from a very early age on until her untimely death and that Whitney never had a fair chance to overcome her personal pain. Too many people around Whitney kept dragging her down instead of helping her to heal. There's only so much a human can take. Whitney fought very hard all her life to rise above her traumas and sought professional and other help many times. Sadly she didn't get the help she needed. Especially the last days of her life when Whitney was clearly crying out for help, people left her alone instead of staying by her side.

The world was not too cruel for her so don't turn this into some romantic notion. She was given from God the most beautiful voice and because she hooked up with the wrong guy and got involved with drugs she threw that gift away. And because of that lifestyle her own daughter was gone not long after. It was heartbreaking to watch happen. So it is not "poor Whitney" it is "poor choices" I hope they are together now but wish they were both alive...as it should have been

It was painful to see her go down that road but I always hoped to see her come back to the way she was. Perhaps the most brilliant version of You Light Up My Life, performed by Whitney herself! She gave the song much more soul, much more spontaneity and above all, rendered it powerfully and graciously :-) I have also heard Debby Boone's version countless of times; IMHO, in as much as Debby had the voice and the looks, her rendering was overrehearsed to the extent that it became too flat. And Debby looked overly conscious on how she would sing it in those old TV footages. There are times when other artists like Whitney--with her natural voice that can really hit all those high notes very, very well--render the songs better than the original artist

Gotta disagree here. We all have our own opinions and mine is that Aretha intentionally uses the word God as a problem solver and lighter of her life.
