I fully agree with the need for reading and more reading. Iam in command of a danish "1864" unit. Even in parts of our "1863 tactics" that I read many times, I still sometimes notice new things or small details that we do differently. When you done other periods (or been in the modern military) it is so easy to make the mistake of taking what you use to do, and push that onto the text you are reading and miss smaller details... Luckily our members are always ready to update their drill, to what ever new thing I found. (Unlike the civil war unit Iam also a member of, and where I was the 1st Sergeant for two years... before giving up.) I started compiling the book into a booklet somewhat similar to what Mr. Tackitt have done with civil war drill. This have really forced me to get the details right, since I both need to judge what should be included, but also since I need to manually write the text on my PC, it force me to actually understand it.

This is a very good, informative video. Your desire to improve your role and your unit is outstanding. I am a company commander(captain) for a small artillery battalion. I am a mounted officer and have my horse fully dressed in time era dress. I am prior military where I was an officer. It has helped in reenactment, however I don't feel it should be a prerequisite to be an officer in reenactments. It takes someone who is committed, passionate, and willing to learn, to be successful in their unit. Leading by example, earning respect, and treating other's with fairness and respect. We are small artillery battalions for both the Union and the Confederates. We do this because I live in the south and there are times when we show up to a battle and there may be a lopsided number for either side, so we are prepared with both uniforms to fill the difference to make it even as possible. I prepare for a battle by researching a captain that commanded his unit in the particular battle that I will be reenacting. I take on that character. I speak, act, and demonstrate all things as if I was that character. Everything authentic and of the period. It's the willingness of the entire unit to be as authentic in everything you do, wear, say, and behave that is vital. Half in is half out! Setting a precedence for other's can be contagious. It is not something that can be demanded, instead it can be converted by developing pride to be the best.

That was pretty good. You all are getting better on the videos on speaking with a normal cadence, speaking clearly, and knowing the subject matter. This was a very good video on team building. Your group are just that a group that has come together to give a living history experience to the spectators. The structure that directs the group will determine the quality of that living history experience. The better the experience the more engaged the spectators are, questions asked, and how they will speak about the experience to friends, family, co-workers, which can increase the number of people who attend the next living history event. I hope all of the guys out there think about the time, effort and money these men have put into giving you the audience an excellent learning experience. Just my 2 cents.

I do rev war and most I’ve seen in our group is 11 guys bout usually we’ll have 4-6, we don’t have official ranks, but our leader of our group bob will change rank depending on how many people show up. And what battle we are portraying, if 5 or less shows up, he’s a sergeant, if more he is a captain, but at the battle of Hubberton he’ll were his LT colonel uniform as that’s the battle the colonel of our regiment was captured, we also have a guy named Matt that also is always a privet, he is seen as the NCO of our group, he’s well versed on the manuals, and takes over when bob can’t make it, and he drills us more then bob😅

Fantastic video enormously informative. A few friends and I are forming a new unit in Arizona and I was recently elected as our Captain. So glad to see more groups on the west coast. I’m curious if you have any recommendations for good events out here

@@sody0538 it is possible to get officer's coats for as low as $100-150; however, these will not be as high of quality and likely will not be period correct. in the sewing, fabric, pattern, that sort of thing.

Firstly thank you for your service. You are right I have never been an actual officer and never stated I was in any sense of actual military service and yes my use of "Um and Uh" could be worked on and limited which I am trying to work on for videos. It is far easier to speak in person to groups of people than into a camera especially when I am going off bullets points and not a fully written script or anything like that.

Nutmegger1864 And level him alone wen it comes to speaking, some times it's just hard to vocalise wen you make a 30 minute informative video man...it happens to some people including me.
