If you’re reading this, it’s probably because you don’t know the difference between a duvet and a comforter. Which one is fluffier? Which one is easier to clean? Are they even really that different? Well, you’ve come to the right place, because Sleepopolis is here to fill you in on everything you need to know about these two bedding essentials, and help you find out which is best for you.
Now, some of you may already be familiar with Casper’s mattresses and the Casper pillow but, for this demonstration, I’ll be using Casper’s Humidity Fighting Duvet and Weightless Duvet Cover. This way, you can get an up-close look at the differences (and similarities) of comforters and duvets.
That's all for now, to learn more you'll have to watch or read the full review!

I stayed at an Airbnb for about 3 mos in FL and was in looove with the comforter, it was so fluffyyy. I was like damn why is this different than any comforter I’ve had before. Then wash day came and I realized it had a cover on the outside. Now watching this video I realize the whole time it was a duvet! Can’t go back to regular comforters now lol duvets are amazing 🙌🏾

Thanks for explaining.. I grew up in Pa in a house with only a coal stove in the kitchen for heat (no heat in bedrooms), so mom always had us layered under blankets and quilts. We always stayed warm, but getting up was brisk to say the least. Now I am 50 years old and I still sleep the same way most of the time, leave the central heat off at night, cover up in layers, and turn the heat on in the morning.

In Europe the duvet cover does not have clips or zipper. The duvets are pocketed just like the comforter. You do not need a top sheet that can get out of place if you are one who moves around when you are sleeping.

The snaps inside the duvet cover are brilliant. I love using a duvet but it drove me nuts when the duvet would gather at the bottom (foot) of the cover and all we would have around our head and shoulders is a thin layer of the cover (no duvet). This would lead to my fluffing and repositioning the duvet, within the cover, in the middle of the night. This doesn't make for a restful sleep. LOL Thank you for this information! Definitely going to keep an eye out for a duvet cover with snaps for our master bedroom refresh. :-)

If each person has a separate duvet (twin size) it is much easier, no hogging covers, they don't slip off the bed as easily and each person can have the fill-power (warmth) that is desired.

@Sleepopolis
@Sleepopolis 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Tomi! I assure you you are not the only one. In fact, there's no rule that says you can't put your comforter inside a duvet cover (so long as it's a snug fit). However, because comforters do not feature internal clasps that hook to the cover, you might find that it gets bunched up more easily than a proper duvet would. That said, it's your bedding and you should do what makes you feel comfortable!

I find that having a separate duvet, one for each person sleeping in the bed, is a much easier way to go. One person may prefer more warmth and the other one less, which is so easy of each person has his or her own duvet. Plus, if one settles the duvet around the body it doesn't slip off the bed as easily and there is no hogging the covers by one person. When making the bed I fold the duvets on wither side of the bed and the cover with a light weight topper of some sort to make the bed look "done". As for putting the duvet inside the cover, just put your arms inside the duvet cover with the "wrong" side out and your arms in the right side, grab the corners and flip the cover over the duvet. So easy!

She said you can but it won’t clump as much if you use an actual duvet insert

Great explanations...leading to additional questions. I will be purchasing for a rental under COVID mandates. I understand the quilting forquilt inside dubet, is it easily washed? Do hotels always wash the inside quilt? Can you recommend a choice for rental as the outside dubet will be washed after every renter. Can you also direct me to colors....Randa

Ted Pearson - "duvet" (doo-vay). What do you mean by quilting forquilt? I can't answer your other questions, but I hope you do wash the cover after every renter... I have heard stories of hotel/motel bedspreads/quilts having bodily fluids from previous patrons doing their thing on the top of a made bed...

So I finally know why Americans using what I would call a duvet, talk about replacing it with a duvet. I'm English, we have duvets and blankets, the word comforter doesn't occur. Also top sheet? Why is American bedding so faffy? I've only known people with pillows and a duvet on a fitted sheet.

Faffy? Definition please.

@@interestedobserver1853 "Faff" refers to seemingly unnecessary complications in a task. 'Faffing about' therefore refers to someone who's doing a lot of stuff that seems to make a task overcomplicated. Example: Riding a motorcycle is a lot more faff than driving a car, because when you want to go somewhere in a car..you can just walk out to the car, get in, put your seatbelt on, start the engine - drive away. On a motorcycle you need to get your helmet, gloves, earplugs maybe... you'll often have luggage options that need sorting out..you *will* frequently forget to do something that requires completion before you put helmet and gloves on, but only remember it after you've put them on...which then means you have the faff of taking them off, doing the thing, putting them back on etc. :)

@@martinchandler9469 Thank you for defining faff and illustrating with a great example. I like this word, faff. I've met a number of faffers, faffing about, often with the word Manager after their name on some business card. Though as an American, growing up with both top and bottom sheets, I do not find the arrangement faffy at all. Lying between the sheets keeps all manner of skin oils, dead skin cells, the occasional blood spot from some small cut, pimple, or bug bite, etc. from soiling the comforter. The sheets are much easier to wash than a comforter, which is difficult to wash in the top loading washers we've used for years. Residential front loaders are now becoming more mainstream, but the concept of duvet covers is still rather new to the US mainstream market.

@@DM-lk5ym Fair point (about the sheets....actually also about managers :) ). I guess I'm just used to the traditional duvet with a cover and no top sheet and it seems to accomplish the same job. Personally, I find top sheets restrictive - because they need tucking in to be comfortable and i'm used to just sleeping under a duvet that obviously isn't tucked in. Each to their own though eh :)

Covering a duvet vs putting on a top sheet, seems about the same amount of work, maybe less with the sheet. Don't even sleep with a comforter, usually sleep with a top sheet and maybe a light blanket or throw on chillier nights.

Greg , I know it was funny even to me , what I did with my duvet . I didn't know what it was for . Lol 😂😂😂 . But believe me I'm more knowledgeable in the kitchen . As for beds and covers I stick to the basics . Sheets and blankets 😉 . Oh well I guess we all learn something's in life sooner or later .
