Hey Devin I have some experience with paint ;). When you go to a paint store they usually give you the standard mix. In actuality every color has 1-7 variances. Next time an easier route is take off the vehicles gas lid and bring it with you and see if they can color match it off a close variance. Also the reason why your bumper looks milky is because the paint store put too much white tint in the black base. I know it sounds weird but some blacks have a little of white in it to give it that look like for example KH3 on 2006 Infiniti G35's have it vs a super deep black 202 with Toyota that DONT have white tint in the black base which gives it a deeper black. Just my .02 cents. I could be wrong but ask the paint store for the tint formula and see if there is any white or yellow tint in. Hey man Love your channel! Keep it up! Also put some exhaust fans in that booth it will help clear the air!

20% more rich black toner & maybe about 5-10% more blue pearl. And I would use a black sealer instead of a grey. Could be a coverage issue as well. Some colors need orientation coats which can sometimes darken a color. It’s part of the painting game. It’s how you learn. When you do at home painting and have a paint shop mix it, ask if they have variant chips you can look at. Or if they can do a camera shot and mix that. Usually a lot closer but not always perfect. When you are spraying bumpers, usually look at the color from a “side tone” view. Meaning , look at it from the side looking down the panel. If it matches you will be fine. The head one view can be a little off and you won’t notice as much because for the most part all colors look better in the sun. Good luck!

A lot of the time especIally on pearl colours such as this you’ll need a specific undercoat, on black usually a black undercoat is needed, I may be wrong but from the video it looked like it was painted straight over the grey primer, which may be why the paint match isn’t as close as it should be.

Color difference is able to be seen on camera. It's gotta be worse in person. Paint job looks good tho and work your is awesome. You mentioned a spray out panel. I would spray out a panel with just the grey primer as base and then with a black base. See if that changes the color. Then the paint shop or a painter can advise which steps to take. Another thing when you are purchasing a paint color you can ask the paint shop how many variants there are to that color. Most paint shops have the chips for those variants I'm not sure the paint shop will have those but you could ask when painting your next project then take a panel with you to compare to each paint chip and get tye variant closest to your color

Im assuming your buying your paint from English color here in Texas that’s where they sell the paint in Omni, Omni plus and deltron. Make sure you take a sample with you off the car so that they can match it to the best of they’re ability. Also sealer plays a big role in paint. The slight hint of grey the bumper has could be the sealer underneath, don’t ask me how just from experience I’ve had it happen! With that being said if your painting black, try and go with a black base/ sealer to get a better match and better coverage. Same thing goes for any color if your going red or blue any light colors, you can use grey/white. This time around just sand everything down and get straight to painting no sealer, you’ll just need half a pint to make it work… I really feel your struggle I’ve been in the paint industry for years yet I still run into the most basic issues yet… best of luck hope this helps!!!

Yo if you are in Spokane and getting ur paint from Wesco they 100% will throw in some extra toner to tint with. Getting paint to match with off a paint code is almost impossible ESPECIALLY with metallic. Just for next time. Also Omni will never pop like deltron. If I was you I’d try Lumabase relatively close in price but they actually have a chip to match to the car. I’ve worked for the company for over 5 years 3 selling paint over the counter. Been watching for along time love that you aren’t afraid to learn by doing extremely inspiring.

Hey Devin. I watch all your videos and enjoy everything you do. When it comes to paint I’ve been restoring and painting cars for 40 years. The basic rule is if you want your colours to match , especially metallics you can’t use shitty paint companies. You need to use glasurit or Standox only. You will not have the problem your having if you use one of these companies. Remember all paint companies have to make there own formulas for every paint code and they only do what they think matches where the company that supplies paints to Subaru is probably one of the top two companies. Something for you to think about. Don’t blend that colour. It will look like hell. Good luck with your work.

I started painting my own cars my self and I did notice when you go to the paint store and ask for them to mix up some paint from just the code it’s always way off, but I started leaving a bad piece from the car like bad fender or just the gas lid if it unbolts then they mix up the paint testing it on the part you bring in if it matches. Ask if you paint store can do that as well. But don’t bring in a plastic part from the car like a bumper because paint is always different on plastics then metal.

Getting colors right is not easy. Seeing you are trying a metalic color, you are going to have to get lucky to get a good match, edge to edge. Pressure and speed of appication seem to have an impact on how the metalic portion lays down. And the olor seemed to have more of a difference in natural light. Thay implys that the actual chemicals making up the mix are not the same. Two dyes can have the same pantone/color number but look very different in different lights.

So the color is more of a chrome look compared to the black of the car out in the sunlight. Def. Dont blend respray the bumper after the shop corrects the paint. Def. Do a card and double check then respray the front of the car. Sorry the bumper didn't turn out man keep up the great work 👍

Hey devin… lighter sealers will cause the base coat to be brighter if that makes sense? Meaning lighter colors use a lighter sealer like white, medium colors use a gray, and dark colors use dark gray/black (depending on which brand of sealer you use). The paint shop should be able to give you the correct sealer mixture for the base you are spraying.

Awesome work, but honestly as an accredited detailer with a number of brands I'd highly recommend getting at least Rupes LHR75 for the smaller areas. Using the 5inch pad on 1 and 2 inch sections really isn't wise and you'll end up with a lot more pad stall and destroy pads quicker not to mention overlap on to areas you don't want to. You'll also become much more efficient too 😊

Would have been much darker had you just used adhesion promoter as your primer/sealant (new plastic doesnt need a primer). The primer you used is what is throwing it off and making it look lighter. I honestly wouldn't waste your time with a respray unless you plan on blending it into the hood and fenders. That's alot of work, so it would be good practice if you have time, to hit up junkyards for panels and learn blending techniques before attempting them on this car. Painting is super fun, but its alot of work. Good luck!
