When I was growing butternut (juglans cinerea) from seed, I got a big wire dog crate to put the seedling pots in so the squirrels couldn't dig them up!

You should be able to plant them outdoors but keep them near your house where there will get some benefit from the residualnheat coming off your home. You may want to also cover them with row cover cloth for a little extra insulation and to protect them from rodents. Squirrels seem to love buckeyes!

So in my area (north GA) these seeds ripen around September 1. This year I saved a bunch of them and have already planted a number of them in pots. One has already sprouted!!! Will this seedling survive outdoors through the winter? We should have several weeks before the first freeze or frost but I don't know if this fragile little plant can survive the cold.

@@vanhouten64 it should survive just fine. They like to be planted immediately.

I just planted a yellow buckeye dug from the woods and hope to graft scions from my red buckeyes onto it. How do you think that will work out? I've had luck grafting fruit trees in the past.

It has the potential for good success! Buckeyes can be grafted to one another. I haven't done it before though so I would be curious to hear how yours turn out.

@@Growingthehomegarden Thanks. Hopefully by next spring the yellow will have some good branches to graft onto.

They are green then turn to a beige brown as they mature.

Hi I am Fabio from Hartford CT, and o would like to know how you made cuttings from viburnum tree? Because i have a tea viburnum tree and i would like to propagate some from the cutting.. thanks

I'll try and do a video on it soon. It's not a tea viburnum but you could try the same techniques as I used with the 'Shasta' viburnum: growingthehomegarden.com/2010/08/propagating-shasta-viburnum-viburnum.html

How did it turn out? In my experience seeding them in this type of rich dirt may result in them rotting. Also, critters love to disturb the pots...Curious how that worked out for you?
@Growingthehomegarden

It worked fine except for the squirrels. Had two that survived being pillaged by the squirrels.

Do you know if they can begun like an avocado seed? Toothpics and glass of water. And does this go for california buckeye tree?
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 4 жыл бұрын
@@tijawi That's an interesting question. I've never tried to grow it like an avocado seed but I will say I seem to have better luck with avocado seeds when I plant them in soil. The CA buckeye and other buckeyes should be able to be grown similarly to the red buckeye.

I planted 5 buckeye seeds and only one sprouted. I put it in an individual pot until it was about 4 inches tall. Transplanted it in the ground and now the leaves are turning copper color and falling off. The tiny stems are still green, but worried it's dying. We've had a lot of rain lately and I'm wondering if that's the reason. I'm in WI - any suggestions?

How much sun does it get? They generally prefer a dappled light situation which could lead to the branches/leaves turning color and falling off.

I have one from 3 years ago and it's only 10 inches with no leaves. Leaves appear on winter only when it's cold. Then in spring they die. What am I doing wrong? Thank you!!!

It could be climate or microclimate related. What zone are you in and what growing conditions? Is it in full or part shade?

Are these poisonous?
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 3 ай бұрын
Yes they are but squirrels seem to be able to eat them just fine. I think there are methods that can be used to boil out the tannic acid and make them edible. Similar to acorns. I've never tried it so I can't vouch for it.

Squirrels keep stealing out of pots and I have none left🙁

That is frustrating! Try covering with a wire mesh held down with some bricks or rocks. That may be enough of a deterrent. Also you could sprinkle ground hot pepper on top of the soil. It won't effect the plants but the squirrels won't like digging in it.
