@dreammachine863 жыл бұрын
That is definitely a beautiful looking kit. Nick, thanks to you my dream kit has been a Collector's cherry for years since I first saw you demo a 7-piece and I've checked out a few more videos of you playing DW cherry/gum kits that also sound fantastic. Unfortunately my budget doesn't stretch to a custom shop order with exotic veneer finishes and fancy hardware colours etc. If I get a Collector's cherry it will have to be a pre-configured in-stock shell pack. Looking at around £3300 in the UK for a 4 piece shell pack. That's a lot but it is doable with some dedicated saving. I already bought a lovely Tama STAR zebrawood snare as the first piece of the acoustic setup I'd like to put together. Been practicing on electric kit only for many years so really looking forward to having an acoustic kit! I'm considering a Mapex Chery Bomb too, the only other mainstream brand that uses cherry for a full kit. No 22x18 bass drum in the available size list though and according to Mapex the Cherry Bomb is tailored for a more vintage sound whereas I like a modern, tight & punchy sound which the DWs definitely offer although demos I've watched of the Cherry Bomb still sound great to me so it's a contender. Wrt DW's latest private reserve veneers, Monkey Pod is my favourite. They only have a list of the latest veneers on the website apart from one picture so I googled them to see if there were any DW kits for sale with them and I thought Monkey Pod looked really cool as well as this Padauk. However the most extravagent DW kit I've seen is this: www.macronmusic.com.au/dw-private-reserve-maple-exotic-zirikote-brass-pin-stripe Now that takes even Collector's series pricing to a new level of crazy! Looks like even the hardware is a custom colour - brass gold as opposed to whoever specced that kit not wanting the same old 24 karat gold anyone else can order! Makes me think of Luke Holland's Collector's kit being the only one in the world with rose gold hardware.

😲 wow!! Beautiful drum set, absolutely wonderful skills there as well. One day I'll be lucky enough to own a set of that level of craftsmanship. I consider myself lucky with the gear I do own, that kit though, Another level entirely. 🙏

It's good to know those shells are cross grain plywood (3 ply?) with the good old re-rings, but very honestly I'd like to know what kind of bearing edges they sport rather than the color of the drums.

Nick!!! I REALLY would like for you to make 2 specific videos. First... in order, the 5-10 best sounding shell packs/drum kits ever made. Second... in order the 5-10 best sounding drum recordings ever made... not performances but captured drum sounds. This might sound counterintuitive to the current sales market... but I think the videos would inspire sales of new drums with these 2 videos as guide post pointing drummers toward their new drum kit sound. Not to mention it would just be killer for you/Sweetwater to do this. People would love it and it would create great dialogue.
@JakeStaffin4 жыл бұрын
Sweetwater doesn't commonly do multiple kits in the same video and the "best shell packs/best recordings" are very subjective to players. For example, you could think that a Ludwig Classic Maple is the best shell pack and I could think the Yamaha Recording Custom is the best shell pack ever and someone else could say the Gretsch Broadkaster is the best.... it really depends on what kind of sounds people like. What I do think would be cool would be a top 5 shootout of the most popular kits in every price range, or a "top 5 iconic drum setups" with different kits and setups of famous players (Steve Gadd, Phil Collins, Simon Phillips, the list goes on).
@ryevick4 жыл бұрын
@@JakeStaffin Hey, Jake... of course it would be subjective. I want to hear Nick's picks. He's a very well respected drummer, with a great ear and people would like to hear his opinions on that.

You know, even though I watched DW factory tour videos every day with John Good narrating, I never stop being amazed at the beautiful instruments they make. I have a Design Series kit in Midnight Blue Satin that’s just gorgeous. The toms are easy to tune. The kick sounds like thunder. And for my birthday earlier this year, I was able to buy myself a little present: a DW Design Series Black Nickel Over Brass 14x6.5 snare drum that sounds like a shot that’s been fired from a gun. Outfitted on the kit are Remo drumheads. And for the cymbals? Zildjian A Customs, the most beautiful cymbals ever created, in my humble opinion. And of course, drummers need sticks, so I use Vic Firth 5A sticks, the best pair of sticks of all time!!!!!!

Darth Plagues the Wise I’ve actually kind of wished that Nick would play the exact same track for every video, for the intro at least. That way it would be easy to go to all the different videos & compare the sound of all the demo’d kits. After the intro he can play whatever the hell he likes, cause I love listening to him.

I'll take a Sonor SQ2 maple with African Marble over this kit, or even a Tama Star Oak..I'm sorry but I've heard better sounding drums that were thousands less..Maybe it's the stock heads, but I just thought it sounded boxy and had no life or resonance. However, Nick's playing is always superb as usual👍.
