The Benin bronzes are the most well-known African artifacts, looted during colonial times from the Kingdom of Benin. Today they are scattered across museums in Europe and the US. The 77 Percent Street Debate is in Cologne, Germany to discuss what will happen to Africa's stolen art, especially now that Germany has said it will return the bronzes.

Why wait and say give it back? Instead of go take it back in the same fashion it was took? Because some are still weak waiting for the oppressors to change their methods? Foolishness!

I think it would be justified but such revenge would need great will, budget and planning as the museums are well secured. But the Chinese are already doing it. I personally think Europe will give the art works back because of the pressure of diaspora groups

The Benin Empire that the British Empire invaded was know as 4 countries (present day Nigeria,Ghana,Benin Republic, Togo) together known as the Benin Empire. But now broken into 4 countries. If Benin Empire was left untouched as 4 countries making up Benin Empire. Definitely it would have been much easier for the Benin's to get back her artifacts returned back to Benin. The most realistic way of getting back the Benin artifacts is through dialogue

People still live in Nigeria. Educated and enlightened people. I am pleased to hear about this, let our art come home and we will deal with the rest.

Nigeria gets quite a lot of money for its main exports: petroleum, gas, cocoa and gold. For this, nothing needs to be done, as other countries build the infrastructure for you. In a couple of decades, the world will be free from its oil addiction. Hope the enlightened Nigerian people have a plan B (for what will happen in 20 years). So fed up with these colonial excuses... you see China complaining about science/technology that was stolen as a reason for non-development? "If the West gives back our stolen manuscripts, philosophy and art... everything will be fine" (China) No, that's ridiculous. The reality is that Nigeria needs to use the money it gets right now (for things that happen to be in the ground, not by means of human capital) and make sure they're prepared for the future... not likely to happen. In 20 years, there will be the same discussion. The world will have advanced... amd you'll still be nagging about bronze art.

@@offongrebecca8659 Your answer says (the logic in the sentence is clear) to let the art come home, and then you'll deal with the rest... 🙄 Okay "educated and enlightened", you mean 60% literacy after 60 years and receiving "free" money i.e. money for which you don't have to do anything? Pretty sure returning the art will have 0% effect on education, nor economic development.

@@remedytee okay. I will assume you are not Nigerian or if you are you do not live here. Which free money? Which Infrastructure? You have been misinformed. The tenacity of the average "uneducated" Nigerian wasn't built on getting "free things" or the so called infrastructure you said foreigners built for us, it is from deprivation and abject poverty. I really wonder where you get your news from. Please allow people be happy, and your 0% prediction is an over exaggeration. I don't know what is stirring you.

@@remedytee have you ever heard of growth without development? The money from exports does not trickle down to improve quality of life. Nobody said the art will make everything right.

I understand how if you take away a culture and it's roots how painful that can be. It's like stealing someone's years by misdiagnosed and misdirection.. The art is beautiful I imagine. P€♡C€

You don't ask a thief to bring back what they stole, it's not in them, it's not their style. A thief is a thief guys😂😂 . Why are our leaders not going collect them, like how they book flights for doctors appointments, and how they easily go for family vacations there

After all Germany went through... leftist movements to eradicate scientific research on differences between human beings so as not to be racist... you pose "it's not in them". I read a Nigerian publication on say "differences" between the people of African nations. If this topic were to be extrapolated to other nations, which it has... it's considered wildly racist 😂. But I see now, double standards 😂

Looters of the Art should just build facilities for them make sure the locals benefit from the arts by creating construction and tourism. They should sponsor the running for atleast 2 years because they made alot from useums entry fees.

Last time I checked, Africa still gets about 100 billion in aid per year. Literacy rates are still the lowest on earth, access to drinking water? Nope, even in oil rich middle income countries. Life expectancy is 25 years lower than the rest of the world... After 60 years of independence... with all the minerals in the world. Trust me, even another 5 trillion per year won't make any difference

This topic always makes me angry but let me join Dennis Osadebay, Nigerian poet, " Don't preserve my customs As some fine curious To suit some white historian's taste. There's nothing artificial That beats the natural way In culture and ideals of life... And I, I never once forget" . I rest my case

This is like a thief telling the owner of the property he stole that the property is better off kept with him than the owner. For this East African lady reporter to even, and kept asking that stupid question, that in itself is appalling and a complete betrayal of her ancestors. Hey brainwashed African lady, those artifacts were well kept for thousands of years before the British stole them from Benin Kingdom.

You weren't strong enough as a continent to keep them in the first place.of course they are not safe at this point in time. Wherever they go they should be available to be seen by all who chose. They are a part of humanity's history. More so than just Africa history. And their stolen past is part of their dynamic history also to be learned from.

Colonialism history? We all know this, the western world lacks tradition, this is just money to them while it is their culture to them. Their way of life, you don’t know what these artifacts mean because it’s not yours. This is why we have conflict and why your fellow whites is South Africa die, because of what their predecessors done. You all cry wolf for them but during he apartheid you didn’t care about the mistreatment of South Africans. Everything in this world has a cause & effect, it’s why racism will never die in America. Everyone else will suffer that same conflict, their children, their children’s children and so on. That seems to be the only form of justice available, but it will only cause a vicious cycle of hatred

@@joeycognition8824 you can't blame people for a history they have not lived .you cannot expect great grand kids to pay for their parents missdeads and atrocities. people of all races colors and creeds. Need to learn from our shared history and current life experience. and work ,live and unify. But that doesn't change the fact that giving historical relics and treasures to a place they have a high probability of being looted or stolen and sold back to wealthy collectors to fund crime is the definition of insanity.

@@glasscrafter669 Stop speaking from ignorance, these countries today have museums they are established countries. You are making excuses for relics of history that do not belong to them it’s simple. The only history that these Europeans know about it is when they looted it themselves. It has no meaning in the wrong hands. Germany and a few others have already done this, England must follow suit. Also yes your children have to be blamed to, it’s unfortunate but what do you expect? If we don’t learn from the past and allow others to perpetuate and benefit off of others suffering they they must pay too. For what else do expect? We didn’t create the system of modern racism
