Did you know Toad goes faster when he's holding on to an object? You need to make sure to hold on to an object to run a bit faster. Make sure Toad is holding that object, so he can run faster. So if you want to be just that bit faster and have the advantage over people who don't hold an object to run faster, hold an object to run faster.

That had to be the weirdest thing the game expected you to do. When you first get to 4-3, there's no precedent for jumping on a Birdo egg for any purpose other than immediately throwing it, so I think it took me forever to figure out how I was supposed to get over the giant death pit. I do recall thinking it was an odd place to put a Birdo though...

19:57 I think I see what's happening here. Normally, when you throw an item or enemy into another enemy, the thrown object bounces a little while maintaining its horizontal velocity. When you have TWO thrown objects--both enemy objects--when they collide, each registers as colliding with an enemy, so they bounce while continuing in the same horizontal direction. However, since they are traveling toward each other, after they start to bounce, they register another collision, so they bounce again. And collide and bounce again. And collide and bounce again, producing the effect you see here.
