Dwarf vs Indeterminate Tomatoes: Dwarf Hype Worth It?

As a breeder, I started breeding Dwarf tomatoes a couple years ago with the intent of producing parthenocarpic varities in the dwarf family. I've got two different lines now, and as a result of the breeding, I've come to some conclusions about dwarf varieties in general.

Great video and lots of good info. Dwarf varieties have allowed us to expand the tomato varieties in our yard and couldn't be happier. Would switch to all dwarves in our small yard but too attached to some of the indet. heirloom varieties. I agree though. So much extra work on larger types. Your plants are doing great. I'm partial to the Dwarf varieties. Just less work for me. Less work gets more important to me with each year that goes by. Let me know if you ever release any of your tomato seeds to the public. Sounds like you have some pretty interesting projects going.

I'm going to produce two OP dwarf lines as well as a micro-dwarf. I'm trying to size up the fruit on the dwarfs right now by backcrossing. A main focus, after fruit size, is the Christmas tree like foliage my cultivar Brandybear imparted. I will definitely keep that trait. They're a fun niche in my overall work. Of course, all my work is parthenocarpic. I'm crossing some legacy lines to bring in disease resistance and fruit uniformity. It gives me some interesting projects to do while I'm waiting on my partners. I'm under contract for a little over a year more. The 2-year contract had a couple goals. One was to genetically test and patent the gene responsible and the other was to license to an ag company to for field testing. Jim, let me tell you bud, it's going very slowly from what I expected. I'm hopeful, but if the contract reaches termination and the goals aren't met, I have a fast-track scenario in mind. At 58, I want to ensure the lines get out soonest. There are some opposing forces out there. I'll leave it there 'cause I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, other than to tell you that the videos are a form of documentation.

You've become an encyclopedia of information on plant breeding. Nice work Brent! I like the harvest off an indeterminate, but several of my growing containers do better with dwarf varieties.

Thanks Matt. Been watching your experiments/grows as well. It gets addictive, but it's fun. I need to backcross my dwarfs for larger, more symmetrical fruit. That's on the agenda this winter.

Great video! Just wondering if you know the gauge of the wire and volume of the containers? I'm thinking of starting gardening.

The pots are 5 gallons. The wire is from Tractor Supply Co and termed "welded wire fence". I looked it up and it doesn't say the gauge, but it's very sturdy. The trick to growing in 5-gallon containers is frequent watering; otherwise, go larger. My main garden uses 10-gallon fabric containers.

Why does it seem like determinate tomatoes don't have the variety that dwarf, micro dwarf, and indeterminate tomatoes have? I haven't seen other colors aside from red or yellow.

I can't say for sure, but it seems like they targeted commercial growers for the longest, flush and finish. I think they may work it now with gaining popularity. I think they're lacking taste by comparison too except for micros maybe which are somewhat slim pickens too.

As far as I know or have experienced, most are indeterminate.
