Thank you SO MUCH! Our window has not stayed open for a few years now, which drove me crazy. I recently retired and decided to try and fix it myself. I do ZERO home improvement, so this was an undertaking. Well, before I found your video, I began working on the window next to it, and now neither will stay open. So I searched further on youtube and found your video. It's like magic!!! I just ordered my lock shoes off the link you provided. So we will see. But i already got two lock shoes out, and it clearly is the problem you showed in your video. Hopefully my new shoes will be here in a week and I can actually fix my windows myself! For $26!!!! Shipping was the bulk of it, but I don't mind for this cost. This video is so badly needed for many folks. Stay tuned, hopefully I'll get them fixed.

Thank you for showing how you fixed your window. After ordering the wrong size the 1st time, I reordered the correct size. Got them installed thanks to you helpful advise. Once they were installed, the window was extremely hard to open and close, due to binding. I tried several different configurations on the metal cam piece to no avail. After studying the difference in the old shoe and the new one, I noticed that the metal cams were slightly different. So I swapped the old metal cams out, with he new plastic shoes. And, walah , it WORKED! Hope this little bit of information will help others save time. I was just about ready to give up and put a “stick” in the window after ordering twice! Is there any videos showing what to do if you have accidentally let go of the shoe in the wrong position and let it fly up inside the channel? Do you have to buy a new shoe and leave it up in there somewhere? Will it not be in the way? Or can you just install a new shoe? Or does the channel remove somehow? I can't see an easy way to get the shoe back without breaking that spring channel trying to get it out. ☹️
@dwcoffey2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Lisa! You should be able to pull the balance out of the window channel and hopefully get that shoe out. You don't want to leave it in there as it will interfere with the window slide/balance.

Dennis, Thanks for the clear explanation. I have one problem in that there is a vinyl strip running from the top to the bottom of the channel, making it impossible to extract the broken pivot lock shoe and the spring holder behind it. Only half of the spring channel is visible and accessible. The strip is 1/2" wide with a 3/8" furry weather strip running down it. It has some give to it, but I haven't been able to figure out how to remove it. Have you seen anything like this?

@dwcoffey Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry this is a bit late, I hope you've gotten the window loose by now. I don't have any good ideas here, I wish I did. Chance are pretty good that part of the pivot lock shoe has jammed in the channel (they have a lot of plastic bits), although I'm not ever a fan of 'forcing' things, you could try to force it open, but may end up damaging something else.

Not an easy way :) The IGU (Insulated Glass Unit) is usually vacuum sealed and filled with argon. Some folks will cut the IGU open, around the edges, clean the inside and seal it together with caulk, but the problem will usually return. I've got a few that I need to replace. HELP....Can you tell tell me how to fix a double hung vinyl window that is "sticking". I have to really pull very hard to get it open. I wondered if i can just spray wd 40 on the "spring" but I want to be sure first.
@dwcoffey Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Van! It's hard to say without seeing the window. Some are built a bit different. I doubt spraying WD40 will help for long, maybe temporarily. Could be a cracked pulley on the weight spring line, possibly somethingin t he track binding the sash.

Does the closed cam shoe fit the window with the open cam shoe? I will have to change the balance also for my windows. Does the higher weight balance preferred over the light-weighted windows? The stamp on my window balance is 26-7. Please advise.
@dwcoffey2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I don't think you can interchange the open cam shoe with the closed cam shoe. Added weight on the balance would be a personal preference, but I would be concerned about changing the factory weight. The window may not perform well when changing the weights.

Dennis! Any advice on fixing/replacing the tab on the top of the sash that we pull in to tilt the window out? My one window goes up and down fine, but it wants to fall right out of the frame. The tabs that hold it in the frame won't engage.

Thanks for watching! You'll have to determine which parts fit your windows, but Look here to find the parts you need: www.dkhardware.com/search?keyword=vinyl%20sash%20latch

High mechanical stress part like that and they made it out of plastics....no wonder they call it vinyl window.......I am lucky that I have old double-pane NuSash windows that were made mostly of metal (aluminum)....excellent video to show folks how that spring mechanism works.

That is the exact window I have with the exact same problem. Now that I have watched your video I feel confident that I can fix it. Is there a way to replace the lock on the side that allows you to tilt the sash as that's broken also? Thanks for an excellent video!

Thanks for watching, Rick! Those catches are replaceable. I'll try to get a video made showing how to do that soon.

my window slams down. how do you repair the restraint mechanism?
@dwcoffey Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Usually the failure occurs with these pivot lock shoes. If that isn't the problem, check to see if the string in the spring mechanism is not broken. If it is, you need a new string. If it isn't, the spring may be broken. The string, spring and clips are all in the piece that connects to this pivot lock shoe. I'll try to do a video soon showing how to repair/replace the spring.
