The biggest long term problem is now the high sediment load in the river system, reducing its capacity and making future flooding - after less rainfall than now - inevitable. We have the same problem locally, thousands of tons of sediment were washed into the river during a flood 10+ years ago, now the area floods each year.
@philiphoward49663 жыл бұрын
you are so right, I have a large Villa in Spain with a lot of land, we had very heavy rainfall three years ago which resulted in flooding. much of the water and topsoil went into the drains. A month later we realised all the drains were blocked it took us a week to dig out and clear the drains with 4 men. Three months ago after 2 years a substantial 2.7m wall collapsed , 75 metres long, the foundations had been washed away in the flooding. It will take years to recover from this, so many nasty surprises ahead. Germany doesn’t have the spare labour to deal with this. The number. of humidifiers to dry the homes out before work can begin is enormous. In the UK when the river Thames flooded a few years ago the insurance Companies settled most of the claims but refused to Insure the properties going forward which has resulted in the collapse in the value of those properties. So far the German Government has been very poor in their financial response to the problem, they talk about infrastructure but very little is said about actually helping the families. They will get no help from the EU empty promises. Such a horrible, tragic experience for so many. The way the public has responded has been wonderful.

I was helping out the mum of my best friend and almost died there in the basement while saving personal things like photos of their grandparents etc. First we just put stuff on a higher level, still thinking that water may comes into the basement...but we wouldn't, couldn't imagine water rising so high, so fast. Basement was lost in less than ten minutes, low level in less than twenty minutes. We needed to get to first floor, it would have taken only fifeteen centimeters more and we would have spend that night on the roof..... In the end we survided, me badly hurt, the women and me completely in shock and devistated. But I tell you: Everyone that was there that night will tell you the same: We survived, that's all that matters. I've lost neighbours, I unfortunately listend to someone shouting and crying about his live, I've seen a family passing the house in a car, people I knew died. It sounds so bad now but luckyly my family survided, luckyly my best friend and her mum that I was with survided. Still today, our town looks like there was war, still today people are struggeling to get through and over it. But again: we survided! Thanks to all the good people that helped us and still helping us, we will maybe not get over it, but we will go on anyway. I'd like to thank everyone that sended their wishes to us, we are still here! Thanks guys, god bless you!
