Serbia has refused to impose sanctions on Russia up to now. The majority of Serbs support Putin’s war in Ukraine. Many have traumatic memories of NATO bombing during the Kosovo War and mistrust the West.
This documentary shows how the war in Ukraine has actually strengthened many Serbs’ feelings for Russia and upped President Vladimir Putin’s popularity. At demonstrations, protesters chant "Serbia and Russia: brothers forever” and "Putin, Putin”. Construction worker Sreten Mijovic regards Ukrainians as antichrists. For him, the most important things in life are Russia, Serbia and the Serbian soccer club Red Star Belgrade. The Grbovic family remembers the frightening weeks that they spent in the cellar during the NATO bombing campaign in 1999 - when Russia was the only country that took Serbia’s side.
Serbia would like to join the European Union, but it feels strong ties to Russia because of a shared culture and the Christian orthodox faith.

Of course it is true. Serbia and Russia have a lot of things in common, for example: -they have war criminal which are called "heroes" by brainwashed and people goes proud of them -they make genocide on civils and disarmed people , also raping women other countries is normal for them -they call "terrorist" everyone who don't think like them -the don't have a real opposition party in their county -their government control all the media to share easy their propaganda. -they blame NATO for every stupid decision make by their politician -they don't change the president for all life time -their president are the richest man in their country -their president decide who should live and who passed away -they always try to invade or destabelize counties near them -the level of corruption is very very high in this countries. -often their church mix religion with politic for political purpose Should I add more?

While the West is far from perfect in international affairs, I would argue that Russian crimes against Afghanistan in the 1980s, against Chechens in the 1990s, against Georgians in the 2000s, against the civilians of Syria in 2010s, and since 2014s against the people of Ukraine far exceed those of the west. The structure and culture of the Russian military produces an environment that embraces indiscriminate crimes against the local civilian population. Their grad missile systems and bombing doctrines saturate civilian areas with bombs, some of which remain unexploded and a hazard. They have been shown to loot the local populace and execute anyone deemed a threat (including non combatants). The Russian government has taken on an expansionist and bullying demeanor in Eastern Europe and constantly threaten action against self determination. The United States has not in recent decades done any such thing. The United States’ war in Afghanistan was a United Nations approved war (including approval from Russia) against a terrorist organization that conducted an attack against America and its citizens. Inversely, the so called “special operation” in Ukraine has been a disgusting attack on national sovereignty and an imperialistic invasion on an unwilling population of individuals who simply voted to be included in NATO. A country should have a right to self determination. Again, the west is guilty of many international crimes and has shown to violate national sovereignty many times over. But Russia is markedly worse on these subjects and should not be any kind of symbol for Serbians to follow.

I think it’s important to understand that the world isn’t black and white. There is no ‘good’ and ‘evil’. There is only your experiences. The experiences of Serbs is that NATO bombed them whilst Russia helped them. I’m a pole, and our experiences are that Russia oppressed us whilst NATO secured us independence, or atleast protection in a way in which we can be sovereign and rule ourselves freely. Neither of these views are inherently wrong, and that’s why the world is so messy.

As a Serb I must say how impressed I am of the objectivity of this video, bearing in mind it comes from DW ;) The pros and cons have been explained quite well. Though the main focus was mainly on emotions and logic behind it, but very little about economic reasons (our banking is 100% Western, and energy is 100% Russia dependent, the fact we have been promissed eu membership for 20 years now and nothing came of it.). Also, our close ties with the French have not been mentiomed, as vast majority of next set of military equipment (mailny fighter jets) will come from them. Also, the stance toward Russia we have due to energy dependency can also be seen in some of the EU members such as Hungary, Czech republic etc. So this is in a way a good video, but it stick to the very shallow / simplified ways of looking at things. Real life is never a Hollywood movie with clear bad and good guys.

I appreciate the effort to keep it objective and the attempt to show both sides. There is not that many media outlets that do journalist work without biased. The only downside in this episode is that the translations did not correctly describe what the people interviewed were trying to say, and you can feel there is still biased in the way you narrated the story. Still appreciate the coverage though.

Serbia has a long-standing love relationship with Russia, dating back from the beginning of the 19th century, when Russians helped us in our Uprising against the Ottoman Empire. It was fortified when the Emperor Nicholas entered the Ww1 because Austro-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Of course, it also helps that they are Orthodox and the only great power that never bombarded us, and whose interests are for most part alligned with our interests.

Reality is: since March 2022 Russia does not exist anymore, it's a now a fake country , run by a small group of gangsters that took control over all constitutions and democratic systems: a group of pirates that have overruled the Russian constitution, filled the Russian parliament with Putin-friends (even murderers of the secret service, no joke!) , banned or even shamelessly murdered all media/journalists,... All Russian scientists, engineers, artists, journalists (everyone with an IQ over 120) have left the country, (or will do so in the next year) all that remains is uneducated people that can be manipulated easily. The Serbian government is following the same track, slowly going towards a dictator-regime, taking over the Serbian media, filling the government with people linked to the Putin regime... However, the narrator failed to inform that air Serbia has been receiving bomb threats on the planes daily from the start of the war. Later, they began to receive calls of bombs set in schools and day cares all around the cities in Serbia. Serbian president says the calls come from Ukraine. 2. RT is banned in the USA (unlike the lady mentioned, maybe her kids found a way to get around it) 3. A lot of Russians panicked and fled Russia in the beginning of the war. However, they say 80% of them returned due to difficulty assimilating and brutal discrimination they are facing (regardless of their position on the war) just because they are Russians

Aleksa Grbovic's statement at 10:30 is the most truthful statement surrounding serbs and the controversies they face. No matter what evil that government perpetuated, NATOs response to target civilians while supposedly standing for democracy, peace, and freedom is the direct cause of so much pain and continued disdain for the west in the eyes of many serbs and it is 100% comparable to the way ukrainians feel right now. Thats the key element in this whole comparison, Ukraine is in an extremely similar situation to where Serbia was 20 years ago, the difference is who the west is supporting.
@st3019

NATO did not target civilisations in the bombardment of Serbia in 1999. This is a lie that many serbs are repeating again and again to victimize themselves and present themselves as just victims . Yes it’s true that civilians were killed that unfortunately was inevitable just like in every war . The bombardment of Serbia was completely justified. It was a war that was going on since 1991 . You need to look at the situation from the inside. Ukraine is facing a full scale invasion not just bombardment. It’s totally different situation.

@@st3019 you are completely incorrect, the Kosovo war and the Croatian/Bosnian civil wars in Yugoslavia were completely different conflicts. They occurred around the same time and concerned the same main participants, but the war was not "going on since 1991", the Kosovo war lasted from February 1998 to June 1999. You have no credit here to discuss what is a lie and what is truth when you can't even get the basic timeline of events right. The reality is that while they were hitting government and military infrastructure primarily (that is true) they were still greatly targeting civilian areas, hospitals, trains, infrastructure in order twist their wrist and to force the Serbian government to bend. It wasn't just civilian bystanders that happened to be killed, there were targeted attacks and specific civilian centers and locations were hit as a means to force a surrender. My point isn't whose side was right or wrong in the conflict or to make "victimize" Serbs (though the civilians were undoubtedly victims just the same way that Albanian civilians were victims of the Serbs) my point is that America is a hypocritical beast that chooses who and what to bomb when it suits them, they choose what is a crime and what isn't when it suits them, and they cannot pretend to stand up for peace and human rights when they both perpetuate war and violate human rights.

Serbia was in control of all yougoslavian army resources . It’s hard to imagine that what happened would had lasted for 8 years if Serbia didn’t want war . Even in Kosovo situation was very tense and repressive since 1989 . War in Croatia and Bosnia are called just “ civil wars “ but these wars woudn’t have happened if Serbia didn’t want to happen. I know the reality in the field is more complicated. My point was to say that it’s not the same situation with what is going on today in Ukraine. Ironical, that the so-called "free people" could not see the hypocrisy of expecting a Serbian to give up their freedom in order to adhere to the mandatory choice to choose either you are with us or the Russians. If you are referring to nato then you are wrong. To invade means that they want something withing the border of serbia such as the land or infrastructure etc for themselves. Nato did not do that because if it did then serbia would have fallen without a doubt. Having said that, nato did attack and we should never forget as to the reasoning behind the attack. What was happening in the region was so bad and it needed to stop. If serbia wants to blame someone, blame soviet russia! They are the reason yugoslavia doesn't exist anymore. The west bombed Serbia. Before during and after they told the people they bombed that they had it coming. Imagine if someone told you that you deserved to be bombed and that you should support them for it. Now the West is surprised when a handful of these people cheer for the enemy of the west. I am sick of war and this war against Ukraine makes me so sad, but I am just as sick of Western attitudes towards others. It's none of Germany's business who or what people in another country might support. Germany does not have a say in the internal affairs of other countries, but still they talk and shame others. Maybe they can look back at their own German history to find some shame for interfering. If you don't like what someone in Serbia is protesting and you don't live there, your opinion is nonsense.

I'm a Russian, I have an access both to the Russian media as well as to the western media. None of these two is better than the other. Every side imposes its attitude. Both sides are no longer objective. The Russian proverb says, "в чужом глазу соринку видим, а в своем бревна не замечаем" that stands for "we see the fallings of others but are blind to our own".
