World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock In The Black Forest Of Germany | Europe To The Maxx

The world’s largest cuckoo clock can be found deep in Germany’s Black Forest. Measuring 4.5 by 4.5 meters, it runs just like a regular cuckoo clock. The giant cuckoo housed inside the massive timepiece weighs some 150 kg. During the early 19th century, one of three clocks in the entire world was made here: in the small town of Triberg. To this day it remains the birthplace of most of the authentic Black Forest cuckoo clocks that are spread throughout the world.
Euromaxx reporter Hendrik Welling took a trip to the Black Forest to find out how the clocks are made, and how the cuckoos got involved in the first place!

I was there in 1998 and bought one. It was shipped from there and after my 3 months of traveling it was waiting for me at my parents place back here in Canada. It was pricy at 550 ueros but worth it! It hangs in our dinning room and has wowed many a dinner guest. It still keeps awesome time and nothing ,not even the bellows has worn out to this very day and it keeps perfect time. These clocks work on the pendulum and the inside workings are amazing and will last a life time and then some! When there I stayed at their lodge and was very impressed with the dinning room as it is all made of wood and shalacked to a high mirror shine. The food there was excellent and the lumberjack breakfast was just simply awesome.

My grandfather owned one.... and I was happy to find one (broken) at an auction that was just like his.... I fixed it myself. I never pass up a complete Cuckoo clock in the auctions if I can handle the price.

Pure curiosity, do you need to oil them? I once bought a used grandfather clock - big mistake. The clock maker to whom I took it to, said, people buy them, never put a drop of oil on them and then sell them when they don't work anymore. HIs logic was that you would never drive a car that way. He had a spray and he said if you just give one squirt every six months it will last for decades. However, another clock maker told me oiling them causes the mechanism to gum up with dust in the air that sticks to the oil. He said, buy one, never oil it and have it rebuilt years down the road when needed. What's the best way ?

Make sure you use a special oil for clocks to lube it!

@@dweuromaxx Of course, I'd buy some from the clock maker when I buy a clock. I'm not buying a clock that expensive unless he sells me some oil. I don't want to drop $2000 and then find out the oil he recommended is hard to come by and/or isn't available in Canada.

I love this video! Thx for the research. A little bit of a bitter taste was left behind, though. Please make sure your journalists know the difference between "17 hundreds" and "17th century". It is said that the Cuckoo clock was invented around 1730 .. which means this was not the 17th century ( 03:24 ) but the 18th century! This mistake is a common one (in German as well), but a journalist should know better so to not spread false information unwillingly. Sorry for pointing this out. I do this with a friendly heart; because, I like DW formats and because I care that the high standard you usually have is maintained.

I had always wanted a cuckoo clock when I was a little girl. My husband finally bought me one from Helen GA. I love it!! But then one day not long ago it fell off the wall and broke. It has a life time warranty on it, but I don't know if they will fix it or not since it fell off the wall? That broke my heart. I still have it and I put it in the original box it came in. Mayberry someday if I go back to Helen GA. I'll ask them if they would be able to fix it for me. I sure hope so. 💔🙏🙏🙏

If they won't fix it, take it to another clock maker. The same thing happened to me, mine is a chalet clock that fell off the wall and is in pieces. Took it to a clock maker a week ago and he said he can fix it, no problem, but it'll probably cost about $200!!

This might be a good place to start researching the history of the cuckoo clock. There are several inconsistencies with the maker’s version of accounts on here. Understandably, as it’s how he makes a living.
