Your channel is such a breath of fresh air for DW content. Tumblr is overrun by people who think all of it is absolutely perfect and youtube is overrun by people thinking it's all fallen apart. I really appreciate your view that it wasn't perfect, we're allowed to want more, but we're also supposed to just have fun with it.

This guy literally goes wherever the wind is blowing through feedback, his commentary is endearing but to pretend he’s providing anything different from other Doctor Who content creators is a stretch considering he shilled throughout the season, touched on nothing he found uniquely negative and switched up his demeanour at the end of the season towards the more critical talking points his particular community had a problem with people complaining about throughout.

I think the worst decision for the new era was putting some of the weaker episodes first. A lot of people were put off the specials by the star beast and then people were put off the new season by space babies. This also gave fuel to channels who get their following by hating on shows, which In turn made others retroactively think the episodes were worse. The show was kind of shooting itself in the foot by putting the more controversial episodes before the better ones.

My main take with Series 14 is that the episodes (if they're staying exactly as is) need to be in a different order. (prepare for yappery) Episode 1: Space Babies Episode 2: Rogue Episode 3: Boom Episode 4: Dot and Bubble Episode 5: The Devil's Chord Episode 6: 73 Yards Episode 7: The Legend of Ruby Sunday Episode 8: Empire of Death *If you don't care about why I chose this order feel free to skip this entire section of yapping:* This order I feel makes the most sense. Space Babies is clearly an opener episode, so keeping it at Episode 1 makes sense. Episode 2 being Rogue I feel makes more sense as the "We've done the future now lets do the past" story you typically get in the first 2 or 3 episodes of a new companion than The Devil's Chord just because it's smaller scale. Boom being "first alien planet" rounds out the little trilogy of "what the show has to offer" type adventures, and I feel like the combo of Space Babies/Rogue/Boom best give us our insight into both The Doctor and Ruby. The next 3 episodes I feel could be argued for a different order, but I'll give my reasoning for the order I have. Dot and Bubble coming at the mid-series point gives our first look at a "something different" episode, whilst also being (or at least appearing to be) a more light-hearted story after the very intense story of Boom. Of course, by the end of the episode, it hits you with the "things aren't always as they appear" kind of twist. Now we're at the second half of the series, and I feel that both The Devil's Chord and 73 Yards needed to come closer to the finale because of the themes and ideas they explore. The Devil's Chord being our big punch into the second half of the series and re-introducing us to the idea of the Pantheon of Gods, and it allows proper time for the "6 months of travel" and the "you never run" kind of ideas floated in the episode. Having this episode as Episode 2 felt like it was only done as a PR thing to get people to watch both episodes at launch back-to-back with their big "experimental musical episode" that linked back to the David Tennant 60th Specials. I feel it's also important to keep a gap between 73 Yards and Dot and Bubble, both of them being Doctor Lite episodes, as to keep us engaged with who our protagonist is supposed to be. 73 Yards honestly feels like a prelude to the finale in so many ways, with how much its referenced in Empire of Death. I feel like it introduces new audience members who didn't watch the 60th Specials and are just joining for Series 14 to a lot of core parts of Episode 7. (Think Kate Stewart's intro, all the things referenced back to this story in Empire of Death etc) and it gives us our first real proper insight into Ruby without then drawing it away by sticking Dot and Bubble in the middle (which was both a Doctor *and* Companion lite story right before the finale). Placing this story here allows the pace to be kept up leading into the finale. Then, of course, the Finale stays in the same place, only now we're fresh from The Devil's Chord's reintroduction of The Gods, and 73 Yards is still fresh in our mind with the ideas that it'll return to.

Opinions on the episodes: Space Babies: I don't know. It's good, but there isn't a lot to say. Nothing wrong with it. The Devil's Chord: I love it, flaws and all. I love how bonkers it is... I love it. Boom: The Moff is back, and he's doing his thing. 73 Yards: Yes please. Magnificent. Dot and Bubble: What a banger. Truly flabbergasting. Rogue: I think this is probably gonna be the one I'll rewatch the most out of the whole season. This episode is for me what The Girl in the Fireplace is for many others. I'm usually not a fan of the Doctor being romantically interested in someone... but this episode just makes it work, and I don't think any other episode of Doctor Who has ever managed to make it work as good as this one. The Legend of Ruby Sunday: still absolutely amazing. The whole build up is sensational. Sure, some characters don't really need to be there (Rose and Carla) and I miss Shirley (nothing against Morris though), but it still works. Empire of Death: after thinking about it a lot, I believe a lot of the pacing issues come from the time jump. You don't need it, it just makes everything feel less important. We have to get this done, you say? Why now? We didn't do it for an eternity, why exactly now? You can just erase the time jump, it makes it feel more important and Sutekh doesn't seem to just "sit around". He just arrived and destroyed all life in the universe. The same is also true for Last of the Time Lords. Once again, you can complain about how he's defeated and all that... but that wouldn't really be an issue (or not that much of an issue) without the time jump. That's the actual reason why people don't like the way Sutekh was defeated. About the mom... I get it, but I don't really like it. It could have worked better if it were shortened, and they definitely should have at least *mentioned* the snow. Had RTD had more time to review and rewrite the script I have no doubt it would have been better, but that didn't happen. A shame really. Other than that, I'll just wait for Season 2 / Series 15 / Season 41, which is gonna be even better than this one. Hype!

Ok, now I would really, REALLY love to see you try your Doctor Who Part 3 idea. But I think it might be hard to maintain good cliffhanger after good cliffhanger all those weeks in a row. If you have to write a mind-boggling cliff-hanger every week that creatively hampers you. Like in Classic Who, it wasn't always a cliff-hanger, sometimes more like a mildling alarming stroll past a cliff. There were fantastic cliff-hangers that have stayed in my mind for years, like the TARDIS falling off a ledge at the end of The Rescue or the Cybermen emerging from sewers in The Invasion, but they were so fantastic because they were standouts. But then again some stories like Horror of Fang rock have consistently gripping cliffhangers, so idk if i'm just chatting shit or if i'm making a good point or not.

Both are from RTD so I guess RTD likes the Doctor being more casual when it comes to fashion.

I didn't write a reaction cause I was too lazy to, but better late than never ig I was beyond disappointed with the finale tbh. I really wanted to like it, I even got ice cream for it, though it was really not great. I was invested in the Ruby's mother arc, so having it land so poorly was rough. This season was good, though out of 8 episodes, there were only 4 great episodes. (Not saying the other 4 were bad, though they feel like decent to good filler episodes meant to be in a longer season.) I think this is going to be the reason this season could end up aging quite poorly. 8 episodes is nothing and can easily be knocked out within a day. No one want's 4 decent episodes and 4 great episodes. 8 great episodes and 4 good episodes feel like the right balance. If this season is the worst we get, we'll be absolutely fine for the foreseeable future. Again, still a good season. Though I really do think that more could have been done to make it better. It felt like a lot due to the weekly release schedule, though after rewatching the entire season, that illusion fades very quickly Also, I completely agree with your take on why this show shouldn't try and appeal to American and British audiences, and I am an American. It feels off, and I couldn't put my finger on it until you said this.
@mikaylaeager79425 ай бұрын
As an American I’m shocked whenever I’m reminded that Doctor Who is Britains most popular show. My instinct is always to compare it to Star Trek as the most popular Sci-fi show in the US but it’s not Britain most popular sci-fi show… it’s Britains most popular show. It really is your Big Bang Theory?! That’s so wild! How do you get so many people to watch something so weird and out there?? The only reason so many Americans watch BBT is because it’s so generic and inoffensive. In fact, I would argue that in terms of cultural impact it still makes more sense to compare Doctor Who to Star Trek. Big Bang Theory may be technically popular but even now people often forgot it exists. Big Bang Theory doesn’t have fans. No one talks about the latest episode with their friends. It’s your quintessential turn your brain off show. The one you stop on when you’ve flipped through all the other channels and couldn’t agree on anything else.

Watching Doctor Who try so hard to push into american markets really reminds me of how Thunderbirds ended. Lew Grade (Head of ITC) failed to sell the British TV show to a US audience because they did not want it. Only one of Gerry Anderson's shows, Fireball XL5, was sucessfully sold to an American network, but recieved such fierce competition it was dropped after 1 season. As the movie, Thunderbirds are GO, made in response to the Thunderbirds sucess in Britain and Australia did not perform as well as hoped, Lew Grade told Gerry and the crew at AP Films to cut production after the making of a second contractually-obligated film, Thunderbird 6 (which also performed poorly), and begin work on Captain Scarlet. Thunderbirds ended, and after that AP films rebranded and began their slow decline in puppet shows, ending their overall productions with Space: 1999. Bit of a tangent but I was just struck by the similarities.

Honestly my biggest issue with Doctor Who since Capaldi left has been the characterisation of the Doctor and their companions. I don't know why but Chibnal and now RTD2 make the Doctor seem like a passenger in their own show, of course this is partly down to the shorter episode count and in RTD2's case a lot of sort experimental episodes/ ridiculous last-minute Disney rewrites/editing/episode order, but the characterisation should really be the focus, especially with a new doctor. Lots of plot/stuff happens but we never really see how this genuinely effects the Doctor and (insert whichever companion since Moffat lol). Re-watching the Capaldi era recently it is the doctors relationships and performances with Clara, Missy, Bill etc. which make that era work on the rewatch even now, elevating even the 'not good' stories or plot-points. For some reason Doctor Who has completely forgotten how to characterise the Doctor and their companions and so even if I really liked some of the ideas in the Chibnal era and now in RTD2 I can't help but not feel invested because I'm not really sold on the Doctor, and in this seasons case, Ruby - which is a shame because when the Doctor/companion dynamic really clicks the show 'works'. I'll defo still watch the next season but for me being a fan of the show defo comes before any expectation that it'll be good lol.
@dwfan91-5 ай бұрын
idk, i think the characterisation of the dr in general in modern who has been a bit off for me. 9 was great because he was intentionally different. 10 is all over the place and can be really annoying sometimes. 11... y'know what 11 gets a pass but 12 is the most inconsistent of them all. He just be switching up all over the place. 13 is a watered down version of 10 and 5, 14 is a filler Doctor and 15 is unlike anything we've ever seen before (in a good way.) Companion wise though I think nw has always been pretty solid. I must confess I was never invested in the series 8 'am i a good man' stuff so all of that fell flat for me so I disagree w your assessment that Doctor Who forgot how to characterise or anything, don't rlly see it but thats just me
@julilu4235 ай бұрын
@@dwfan91- It's certainly different to the classic series but I still think it works. I like 10 tbh I get a lot of people found his relationship with Rose annoying but tbh I thought it was fine and sets up his dynamic with Martha really well (Season 3 is one of my all time favs). Disagree with 12 - the work Capaldi and Moffat are doing with the Doctor in that era is defo the highlight for me, and even if the 'good man' stuff ended up being a bit underwhelming - I think 12 and Clara's dynamic throughout that era is one of the strongest and best written/acted in all of NuWho. The drop-off with Chibnal and now RTD2 seems pretty noticeable to me I don't think I could really describe any sort of shift or development in relationship with Whittaker's doctor and any of her companions and the same can be said for Gatwa with Ruby. I suppose this isn't too dissimilar to classic who - not every character really needs a big character arc - but Chibnal with the 'fam' kept hinting at development that just wasn't there and the same has happened in the most recent season for me. It's a shame because there are good ideas here and I don't think I'm being a hater for recognising this but it really stops me from being that invested in these eras of the show tbh. Respect your's and loads others opinions will be different tho and I found your ideas of a completely new format really interesting.

Having had a few weeks to ponder of my thoughts BUT no rewatches so far.. Church On Ruby Road: 6.5/10 Fine introduction but super weird pacing Space Babies: 6.5/10 yeah that's right! I thought this was pretty charming at least in the character interaction (which this series really needed more of) Devils Chord: 7.2/10 I need me some more goofy Who! which also arguably does hurt this episode because it feels like it makes the villain less of a threat. Boom: 7.9/10 Soild but very basic in terms of Moffat writing 73 Yards: 8.5/10 Feel like there's really no pay off now that Ruby doesn't have speical powers? but I can still enjoy this one by itself by are large margin compared to rest of the season. Dot and Bubble: 7/10 This episode really demonstrates how I feel about a lot how "clean" everything feels now in TV shows, of course it this episode case that's the point ANYHOW I would gladly give this episode a 9/10 for that preformece of Gatwa alone but the poor guy is barely in it. Rogue: 6.5/10 Ones like these make me miss Classic Who pacing. To be fair DW has always been pretty bad at love stories but this really ani't it, nice cameo that breaks a good chunk of canon btw. Legend of Ruby Sunday: 9/10 Gee wiz! what an amazing pre final! my pyramid boy final returns after so long! I can't wait to see how this wraps up with a satisfying conclusion! Empire Of Death: 6/10 *Dies of Cringe* Best goodbye scene in a long long time though I'll RTD that Final thoughts: yup that was indeed a season of Doctor Who Didn't love it but it's not worse than Season 15 of Classic Who so that means it get's a Bronze star for trying.

For people who’ve never seen the show (general public, my friends who i’ve been trying to convince to watch with me, etc), the conversation then looks like this: Oh, doctor who? maybe i’ll watch! Oh, people are saying the first episode is bad. Okay, maybe not. Then later, news comes out that the full series is now available to watch. People who usually wait for that/missed out on watching weekly somehow, either because of space babies being “bad” or otherwise start to think, hey, now that the whole series is up i should watch. What are people saying right now? Oh, they don’t like it. Oh, okay, nevermind. unfortunate :(

Also an add-on because i just got to the part where you talk about thinking the doctor used a death wave type weapon in the time war-i was always under the assumption (until DotD) that it was a delta wave. It’s said a couple times throughout the series that Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways was the part of the Time War (i.e. Rose bringing back Jack, the final act of Time War being life), so to me it paralleled really well that this situation where the Doctor was unable to specify the wave between human and dalek was exactly the same decision he made in the Time War but he ultimately refused to enact it again. Cool to know other people got the same impression!!

1:08:17 I knew you were going with reverting back to classic ahaha! But you’re right. At first it might sound weird, but in this modern age where everything needs to go faster, this might just be perfect. I also think it works by being the same principal of people being able to watch 60 1 minute tiktoks but not a 1 hour video essay. And of course all the points you brought up. I can only see good things. You have completely converted me to a classic who format truther. Anyways #dwfan91forshowrunner get it trending to twitter asap

Doctor Who isn't an American show, it's a British show. It doesn't have 13 40 minute episodes, it has 5 stories split into 4-6 20 minute episodes It doesn't star typically attractive actors, it stars quality stage actors It doesn't ignore political issues, it charges them head-on I liked what I saw this season, but it just wasn't right.

what I like about the Last Jedi is the small scale (universe wise) but character wise, it is massive! That's what Doctor Who needs to be. Some of the best Who stories are small scale (Midnight, Blink, Vengeance on Varos,), all you need is a small setting, a few great characters, and a cracking villain, not these universe-shattering events. When you end the universe, there's nowhere you can take the characters or plot but backwards. RTD got too rapped up in his mystery box, he forgot a 3-dimensional dynamic between the Doctor and the companion along the way, leaving it bland and uninteresting. There's not a single interesting moral conflict or at least an argument between The Doctor and Ruby.

As an American Americans don't care that it's British. We also don't think big bang theory and young Sheldon are good writing. It's a meme how bad big bang theory is. You can't go by ratings in America because only a small percentage of people are tracked and they're all old people and it's not tracked against streaming shows. If anything Americans probably don't like it because more and more just don't like queer people. It's insane.
@dwfan91-5 ай бұрын
to your last point... true lol. but to your first- yh BBT is a meme for how bad it is but the truth is, we're in the minority. Most of the american mainstream audience LOVE it and just a quick glance at the comment section of clips on youtube will show you hundreds of thousands of fans declaring it as the pinnacle of fiction. And also if the ratings in America are small then I am heartbroken bruh, BBT had a 20 million viewers average, New Who at its peak with Series 4 had an 8 million average its wild😭 but yeah you're right lol

I disagree with a bunch of your points in this video, like always...👀 But you really hit the nail on the head with the Netflix thing. If it simply dropped on Netflix worldwide at the same time for everyone at once, it would have been 10x bigger. Especially if the entire back catalogue was on there in advance, giving people a chance to catch up. I think this series had alot more problems than that, but I think you nailed the poor marketing and the Disney deal being the main culprits. When we hit the Boom, 73 yards and Dot and Bubble stretch of episodes, the good word about the show would have spread and cos everyone's got Netflix so many more people would have given it a shot. But we stuck here with Disney for now :(

60 mins doesnt really fix the problem of the format. Take Empire of Death for example, still falls into the exact same pitfalls of the 45 minute format despite being close to an hour in length. Maybe I should make a video detailing why the format sucks so much

My overall thoughts are that this series has some amazing episodes that have great rewatch value, but the series as a whole does not. Any time I rewatch Doctor Who I rewatch a whole series or all series of one Doctor's era, because the pay off is there and it's fantastic. But this series is the least serialised series ever (maybe except series 11 and 12, idk, still don't feel like rewatching those), there is no arc, no drama to push it forward, no overarching theme, only one mystery that turns out to be a mixed bag (Susan Twist as it ties into the finale of mixed feelings) and one mystery that is really disappointing (that being Ruby's mother). The latter might be mended in series 15 if they explain the unexplained things and make them make more sense, but as of yet, this series has nothing tying the episodes together.

sutekh should’ve been a season 3 villain, season 1 in new who was just the daleks it wasn’t until s4 that we got a huge villain like davros. Also if you’re going to have a big villain they should change the show in some meaningful way. Sutekh had no lasting impact really. Something more monumental should have happened like an actual Susan doctor reunion or Sutekh damaging the tardis in some way that has consequences for future seasons.. just something to give his return more weight

I do love seeing fan reactions that are positive and full of passion for the show but I don't agree with absolutely everything. I think this was a mid season of Who. Now I've had time to settle my thoughts and rewatch episodes I don't think it is as strong as other seasons. Which is a shame as I was hyped for this as Ncuti has been amazing and keeps getting better. But Empire of Death was awful. The ambiguity over certain things like the snow and the sign were just bad. Ambiguity works in episodes like 73 yards but for a finale we need a big showdown or some climax of the series. But RTD dropped the ball in terms of writing and I feel with a writing team it would've been better. Also we had four or five solid hits but in a series of 8 episodes I think we could've done more with 10 or even 12. I know it's expensive but honestly I don't feel like we are actually getting value for money. But Murray's been good, I am starting to warm to his new style. I'd like to see the soundtrack come out (ideally before GTA VI 😜). Overall I think it's been okay. I'm still unsure how I feel knowing that this is the benchmark going forwards, I think a lot of improvement is needed but hey at least it's not cancelled!

1:27:00 My defining comment, apparently, haha. The only thing I'd say is that "Doctor Who has never made sense" is kinda just saying "this doesnt make sense, but the show hasnt made sense before, so that's okay!" And I find that a really lazy argument. If you're okay with stupid things happening, that's fine. I can put them aside sometimes, too. I absolutely adore Peter Davison's time on the show. But the stories often have A MILLION holes and some of the goofiest shit happening, but somehow, a combination of the cast, the era, the general hokeyness of the show at the time, the bizarre unintentional campness, it just turns out it suits me perfectly and I have a blast. But for me, in a modern show, it makes me cringe to see it still happening, especially with Doctor Who, which I'd hope was getting past it by now. I'm unfortunately in the ugly "I like serious Doctor Who" for the most part camp, but I think the perfect display of balancing comedy, camp, and seriousness is in the classic show, season 26, in the modern show, series 4, and generally, Big Finish! Big Finish writers have mastered the Doctor Who tone better than anyone else, in my opinion.
@dwfan91-5 ай бұрын
nah I totally agree, I was just playing- the whole 'Doctor Who has never made sense' is a bit of a cop-out argument, just sometimes the things that 'dont make sense' dont really matter to me, but you are right in that a) that didnt make sense and b) dr who should at least TRY to make sense
