Kitchen condiments around the world add a certain something to meals. But do you know horseradish? This under-appreciated root vegetable popular in European cuisine can do more than just spice up a creamy sauce. You can add it to fish or meat dishes, or even milk products. Horseradish has been grown in Bavaria for over 500 years. Find out what makes it so special and which culinary delights - besides horseradish cream - can be cooked up with it.

In Japan there's something similar called yama wasabi (mountain wasabi). You can buy it in supermarkets, usually in winter. Add a bit on hot rice, very delicious.

Being from close to Nuremberg I remember my grandmother growing it and us kids picking it. There was a horse radish salad she used to make that was incredibly tasty 😋

I grate half a small horseradish and I can't breathe. I don't even want to imagine the air in that processing plant. I can't blame the lady in that old footage wearing a gas mask.

a small, closed food processor is your friend here. Brush it mostly white, cut to fit, and add a little water to help it blend. Blend until smooth. Don't add any vinegar until it 'blooms' into just the amount of heat you want, then add the ground h and some vinegar to a small glass container and refrigerate. It'll stay flavorful for about two months.

@@DWFood For the next edition of the video, you should talk about other uses of Horseradish. Most of the common 'wasabi' that is used in Japanese restaurants around the world is Horseradish with green food coloring. So many people are getting horseradish and wasabi so mixed up and it is skewering people's preconceptions of what is what and etc.
