The mets definitely lead the league in insane retired numbers Casey Stengel..His record as mets manager was horrific Gil Hodges..If Gil Hodges number is retired, than how is Davey Johnson's number not retired Willie Mays..Willie Mays played two seasons with the Mets Jerry Koosman, Dwight Gooden, Daryl Strawberry, all great met players, but none of them all hall of famers Keith hernandez..Not only is Keith Hernandez not a Hall of Famer, Hernandez only played 6.5 years with the mets. The mets are making a mockery of what should be a special honor
@SoulFireCandlesNYC
@SoulFireCandlesNYC 5 ай бұрын
I agree on stengel Hodges and mays. The others wasn't hof but they made their stamp on the team. Hodges wasn't even their nest manager. Johnson was. Hodges let's face it had that 1 lucky season where they won it all. That's why it's a miracle. Take that away his record is mediocre. Johnson was a far better manager not only for the mets but overall. Mays some met fans say he's considered a new york player. He had his best years with the giants. He don't deserve to have his # retired

I agree, to me a retired number is a sacred thing even more sacred than getting in the Hall of Fame, the only Met player who should have their number retired is Tom Seaver and even that is questionable as Seaver choose to abandon the Mets

@@DeE-pt5lz Agree with some of your points but...Just to set the record straight, Seaver did not abandon the Mets, the Mets abandoned Seaver.

Dwight Gooden is a living testament that when you become a Yankee you automatically become a champion. Just goes to show you how a shitty team like the mets/mess can bring a legendary pitcher down to the point of drug use. Dwight Gooden did the mets a favor by letting the mets retire his number. The mets are forever indebted to Gooden. P.S. Also see; Daryl Strawberry

I have been a Mets fan all of my life...and this includes my seven-year-old self in 1986. Back then it was Darryl and Doc all the way. With that being said, this speech was an embarrassment to the team, the game and himself...in my opinion. If he had actually cleaned himself up and came back to show those who are now on a similar path that you can recover, make better choices and not only be a productive member of society but be a successful role model...like Strawberry did, then this honor would be deserved. But he has done none of that and even after being given this honor, he decided to use his time to take shots at the organization for cutting ties with him. He proved that the Mets were on the right track when booting him 30 years ago. Make no mistake, Strawberry has not been perfect since cleaning himself up...but at least he appears humble. Doc appears to be no different than when he was booted from the Mets in 1994. For those who say that the Mets should not have cut ties with him, that they should have kept helping him. My question is for how much longer? He was 30 years old when the ties were cut (give or take a few months). At 30 years old you are a grown man...and if you cannot take care of yourself, a professional sports franchise should not be relied on to do it for you.

I grew up a Doc in the mid-80s. To be honest, it was a bit cringe that he brought up the Yankees in the speech, but I get it. He may have not been the most eloquent about it, but I get what he was trying to say. Doc was a New York institution with the Mets. He is a Met. He was Doc with the Mets just as Strawberry was "Straw" with the Mets. They may have won rings with the Yankees, but they didn't win the ring that is and will always be the most special to them. Love myself some Doc. Fuck, he was electric in his prime.

Moral of the story boys and girls is NY Mets are a trash team. They refused to give Gooden another shot and only the Yankees and Steinbrenner believed in giving Gooden another shot...twice especially after his off the field troubles. The Mets will always be second tier in NY behind the Yankees

Honoring a drug addict and degenerate is disgraceful. I was a Mets fan in '86 and was glad they won but at some point people that have been in jail shouldn't be given such a platform nor be celebrated. The argument that on field achievement can be separated from overall life behavior is absurd. And when Gooden basically whined about the Mets rejecting him he pretty much proved my point.
