Rudy had like the top rim protection percentage of the entire league. You wont see it on highlight clips but every game 4 or 5 times a game a dude comes in the lane, rudy flashes and the dude runs right back to the 3 point line. Ya there are a few highlight dunks against him for sure. But there are a number of players that run away from the paint when rudy comes and flashes. Now, if you want to pick on that he is not a great 1v1 defender, thats harder to argue, but the ones that he struggled against 1v1, other teams are triple teaming them to defend them. just sayin. If you want to hate on Rudy so bad, look at his offensive game, thats atrocious ha.

Blocks isn’t everything. The guy Rob Williams III was a blocking machine, then GS started putting him in the pick & roll (and Al Horford) in the 2022 finals and changed the series up. I think a great defender is Ben Wallace. He was an INSANE paint protector who could also defend on the perimeter and got a crap ton of rebounds (which are considered a part of defense) Obviously Ben is a tough act to follow but I feel like protecting the paint while also being able to switch and guard the perimeter should be the minimum criteria, which is why Draymond was an elite defender in his prime. Giannis is also an elite defender, along with Anthony Davis (even if he’s taken a step back).

These guys are borderline unwatchable when they all start blabbing louder than each other. Too many giant egos for one room. As someone who loved those Nets teams, Kenyon wasn't even close to as good as a defender as Rudy is/was. Everyone likes to clown on Rudy and disregard his defense and trust me, I get it, french people are soft and and Rudy has a punchable face BUT the numbers arent lying with Rudy. He is an elite defensive anchor that has been the major reason why his past teams have been successful. Kenyon at 6'9" NEVER made an all defensive team yet alone DPOY. Rudy is 7'1" and made 7 all defensive teams with 4DPOY's. Blocks per game is a terrible way to judge a defender so im not surprised these idiots are making up numbers to qualify someones ability but i just want to point out that KMart NEVER averaged 2bpg even in a shortened playoff series. Rudy averages over 2 FOR HIS CAREER. Go ahead and yell all day that "analytics have ruined the game" or that "real hoopers know better". While I agree that you can't get the whole picture from stats and that defense is the hardest aspect of the game to quantify through statistics, they do give you a glimpse into how effective a player is towards their teams overall defense. At some point you have to take into account that all of the plus/minus stats and advanced RAPTORs, LEBRONs DARKO's SNORFS WORPs and TORMPs (yes I made a few of those up) indicate that Rudy has been having a major impact on the way opposing teams attack the hoop and when he is in the game, they dont get easy looks at the rim that they otherwise are used to. The game has drastically changed since Kenyon played and its even changed significantly since Dwight was at the peak of his powers. Because it wasn't a thing in his era, we didn't get to see Kenyon guarding on the perimeter and we rarely saw him switching onto smaller guards. We can speculate (as apparently many of you already have) that he would be good at this because he is shorter (lower center of gravity) than the majority of centers and was a great athlete. Maybe he would be able to switch like Bam does today but that is a very big MAYBE and just because he was athletic and short for a center that does not mean he would be good. There are plenty of examples on the contrary. Combine the above fact with the fact that Rudy is actually a very competent perimeter/switch defender for someone his size. Every smart team targets the center at the end of the game, not just Rudy. As much as the media tried to make it out to be, it wasn't Rudys fault the defense failed in Utah, that was Donovan Mitchell and his embarrassing lack of effort. So my point in all of this? The Gobert lack of respect is getting old. You don't have to like him but to not acknowledge his defensive impact just shows a lack of understanding of the modern game. Kmart has had a ton of terrible takes from Jeremy Lin to saying that "real hoopers know that Kyrie is the best player on the Mavs" but this one belongs in the same tier of utter nonsense. He was nowhere near as impactful of a defender as Rudy has been his whole career.

@@gyamjames Some American players like to hate on him because he's not part of their "fellowship". Most of them grew up together through AAU and college. They have a really hard time aknowledging or respecting players who didn't go through the same path nor grew up with them. They want to validate their own path. Not saying this is right or wrong, but some people function like that and it seems pretty prevalent in sports

@dhollins - KAT guarded Jokic for the most part, Gobert didn’t do much in that series. And the wolves had their best defensive game when Rudy was out for the birth of his child

@@nydibs Yeah KAT was his primary match up but what I'm saying is when Gobert did end up guarding Jokic he did just fine. Outside of game 5 Jokic shot like 40% on Gobert. And their best game was game 6 not game 2

He averaged 1.1, because they feared coming in the paint knowing what the possible outcome might be. Most of Rudy's blocks came from him being a weak side defender.

Dwight Howard has clearly not watched Rudy Gobert. Rudy anchored a top-10 defense with Conley, Mitchell, and Bogdanovic on the floor. No one does that if they're simply a good team defender. He also transformed the Wolves defensively. Smh
