देवी प्रसीदतु मयि ब्रह्मचारिण्यनुत्तमा।।
Dadhana kara padmabhyam akshamala Kamandalu.
Devi praseedatu mayi Brahmacharinyanuttama.
(Salutations to you) The one who is holding a rosary (Akshamala) and a ritual waterpot (Kamandalu) with her lotus-like hands.
Devi, be pleased with me, Goddess Brahmacharini, the unparalleled one.
This shloka praises Brahmacharini Devi for her penance and devotion, seeking her blessings for wisdom and spiritual strength.
Brahmacharini Devi is the second form of Goddess Durga, worshipped on the second day of Navratri. The name “Brahmacharini” is derived from the Sanskrit words “Brahma” (meaning the one self-existent Spirit, the Absolute Reality) and “Charini” (meaning a female follower or devotee). This form of the goddess symbolizes devotion, penance, and simplicity.
Appearance and Symbols
Brahmacharini Devi is depicted as a serene and austere figure, dressed in pure white. She holds a japamala (rosary) in her right hand and a kamandalu (water pot) in her left23. These symbols represent her dedication to spiritual practice and asceticism.
Legend and Significance
The legend of Brahmacharini Devi is deeply connected to Goddess Parvati’s intense penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband. After the death of Sati, Shiva’s first wife, Parvati performed severe austerities for thousands of years, consuming only bilwa leaves and water.
Despite her rigorous penance, Shiva initially remained unconvinced of her devotion.
However, Parvati’s unwavering resolve and dedication eventually caught Shiva’s attention. Disguised as a Brahmachari, Shiva tested her devotion through a series of challenges and riddles. Parvati’s wisdom and steadfast loyalty impressed Shiva, leading him to accept her as his consort.
Worship and Devotion
Brahmacharini Devi is worshipped for her embodiment of devotion and penance. Devotees seek her blessings for strength, wisdom, and the ability to remain steadfast in their spiritual pursuits. Her story inspires followers to embrace simplicity and dedication in their own lives.
