As Ecuador's war against drug cartels continues, police arrested two suspects over the killing of an Ecuadorian prosecutor who was tasked with investigating last week's dramatic gang attack on a TV studio that was broadcast live.
Prosecutor Cesar Suarez was gunned down in his car in the port city of Guayaquil on Wednesday.
"We have apprehended two suspects involved in the murder of prosecutor Cesar Suarez... after investigative steps that allowed us to identify the alleged involvement in the criminal act," Police Commander General Cesar Zapata said on social media.
Police said the killing had the hallmarks of an assassination and evidence they recovered included a rifle, two pistols, a firearm charger and two cars.
Ecuador is in a state of emergency declared by President Daniel Noboa in response to last week's attack on live TV.
Authorities are fighting against transnational drug cartels that have increasingly been using Ecuadorean ports to ship narcotics to the United States and Europe.
Soldiers on Thursday launched a vast operation in a prison complex in Guayaquil, which has been the nerve center of the government's war on drug gangs.
"Army and police personnel are carrying out a new intervention" to "control the external and internal perimeters of the penitentiary center," the army said in a press release.

Yes, it is good to mention the demand. I don't like when reports only mention the demand in the United States. There are drug doers in Ecuador too. There are more people in Latin America than there are in the United States, and of course many more people all across the world and unfortunately there is demand all over the place. I think when commentators just blame the United States they have a different focus or agenda going on.

I just came back from Ecuador, and the last week of my trip coincided with the first week of this unrest. These sensationalist news stories have to stop. It is not a COUNTRYWIDE problem - there are some dangerous areas of Ecuador, and like many (most) parts of Latin America, all cities have their good areas and their bad areas. But to claim that "the country is spiraling out of control" is just irresponsible journalism. I was in Quito LAST WEEK - there is a greater police presence, but it is operating as normal other than the curfew (and really, how many cities are "safe" on the streets after 11PM anywhere in the developing world?) The murder rate in Guayaquil skews the murder rate in the rest of the country greatly. Is Ecuador going to have to step up its policing? Sure. Is the country "at war"? Not even close.

Luckily the attackers were less united than Ecuador which is why this coup will fail. Maybe next time they will execute their rebellion with more expertise knowledge of how to actually do so. They will lose more money now because of this temper tantrum they have thrown that has the entire world watching. To go after ONE prosecutor is reactionary and ineffective and to get caught is juvenile. Ecuador might want to look into consulting and securing their borders better because the next time this happens, truly trained forces may be what they are up against with leadership that actually knows what they are doing. They dodged a bullet, pun intended, this time. Likely next time will be far less favorable for them if they do not take the proper preventative measures now. Just based on the loss of profits which is going to affect multinational organizations, they will send people to Ecuador and start treating it as their military command so the next time the government does not play nice, the state will be crushed and forced to negotiate. Heed these words because the embarrassment of looking weak and defeated and losing massive profits is not something leadership anywhere is going to take lightly.

Ecuador will never become like El Salvador was. In Ecuador it is not just gangs vying for territory. In El Salvador it was gangs going unchecked and getting bloodier because they thought nobody would so anything about it. El Salvador has narcos there and they understand how to run business without having some country invite the DEA to throw parties in their territory. The reason these gangs likely stopped their offensive for the most part is that big guys in Peru and further up North told them to wind it down or they would be the next targets. Those gangs don't care about the cops. They want to kill all the cops. You seem them shoot cops right in the head. It is because not only gangs control Ecuador that things will wind down and get more peaceful as long as the cops don't go overboard with their comments and actions. A few dead disrespectful cops is nothing because these guys are macho just as much as they like to make money. Guaranteed Peru and up north got tired of their shenanigans because it sucks to have to store money and drugs and then get jacked by the cops doing runs which is exactly what was happening while these gangs were wreaking havok in Ecuador.

Lack of self-control, self hate, cowardice to protest own government. Short term goals, selfishness, no work ethic, lack of belief in self and others individual rights. Groupthink is what caused their demise

I beg to differ. These criminal orgs in Ecuador have no "Groupthink" abilities because they are not a united front.

" We will continue doing our work with more strength and more compromises...." - A freudian slip. Maybe that's why Ecuador is in this situation in the first place. Lol

Why do cartels flourish mainly in poorer countries? Its not about human rights. But the less hope people have to have a life in dignity and not extreme poverty, the more they will be drawn to a criminal path. And of course the damand for drugs. As long as there is a huge demand and people who are willing to pay good money for drugs, there will be someone who will be willing to provide it. And as long as drugs are illegal, it will be the cartels who provide it.

They will never go out of business. They change with the landscape. If trees become legal, they sell flowers. If flowers become legal and make more money, they open up flower shops.

A sad day to the law. May God be upon you, if there is no human cant fix the situation you can go to God. Everyday is a pressure, i hope United State take a part for this situation. Sometime United State like a snake, they move both way for the Cartel and for the Ecuador Goverment. Friend or foe, we dont know. But help that mother and children want to live a piece life. Just help them, bring that piece.
