In March 2021, at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, four of Europe's most powerful women sent a letter to Brussels. It included a dire warning. The pandemic had shown how much the EU depends on foreign technology, they wrote - and this needs to change.
Their language was diplomatic - but the underlying message was clear: It’s time to rein in Big Tech.
Governments around the globe have set their eyes on the world’s largest tech companies.
We might not always notice it - but technology is all around us. We use it to communicate, to get information, to organize our lives. And almost all that technology is made by private companies.
This has given rise to an industry known as Big Tech. And within this industry, four companies have become especially powerful: Alphabet - which owns Google - Amazon, Facebook and Apple.
In fact, they’re so big now they’re known as the “Big Four,” or by their acronym "GAFA."
Those "Big Four" actually run fairly different businesses. But what they have in common is that they provide digital services - and they have become so ingrained in our lives that it’s almost impossible to avoid them.
But how did Big Tech come under so much fire?
And how did it get so "Big" in the first place?

I think a serious competitor would probably help KZbin, but you have to be careful saying that competition is always good for consumers. Competition in the movie streaming world (eg. Netflix) for example make users who want to watch all the big budget movies have to subscribe to loads of different services as the movies aren’t concentrated under a single subscription

What about Microsoft? Majority of PCs use windows. That’s the ultimate monopoly
@CirTap
@CirTap 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe on PC, but PC usage in offices or with some gamers is a different usage model than running a social media platform and online shopping mall, very different market segment with much less power over people's (online) behaviour and access to (online) information. Also mobile devices and tablets take over by numbers and M$ never dominated the mobile market, never have (that's Apple and Google depending which continent you're on) nor do they run a noteworthy search engine and basically zero digital shopping outlets .. apart from their pointless app store. Azure is also not a massive competition to Google's or Amazon's data services. Laptop computers share Windoze with iOS and the many flavours of Linux like Ubuntu. And imho is it technically much easier to move away from Windows to a truly competitive alternative OS with all them apps than to find *equivalent competing* services to Google, Amazon and Facebook. Depending on what you do and how you earn a living, there is no way around them.

Ype. Companies like Microsoft that have also gathered information on so many people for some reason don't fall into their category. Also the fact that governments themselves use these practices and have used these practices for far longer than these big companies shows that governments don't want people to do it while they can. I mean did we forget about Snowden. Im sure some people know what i mean. :)

It would help in some cases but also in others would make these big companies either more expensive or not free. For example is you break google up into smaller companies. You might have to pay to use youtube and google. You might have to start paying to use facebook too if they break it up. Amazon might become more expensive to use if they break it up. While there are good points in breaking them up to create a more competitive market and making those companies more responsible in their practices. The problem is that it will actually have really bad side effects first. It is a difficult question that is for sure.
@PyroMancer2k
@PyroMancer2k 3 жыл бұрын
The thing that no one really talks about is Rockafeller made a ton of money when they broke up his Monopoly. The stock price went through the roof after the break up. And as for Competition it didn't really do much because you just had smaller local monopolies as each company was simply given it's own region in the breakup and they didn't compete with each other because they were all local. It's a lot like Internet service in most places there is only one provider, two if your lucky, and in those regions where the provider isn't very good there is no real alternatives. Big tech has become more like a utility as so much relies on having internet access these days.
@tjmarx
@tjmarx 3 жыл бұрын
You mentioned Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple but you failed to mention Twitter, Microsoft, IBM, CloudFlare, reddit and Oracle. Visa and MasterCard probably should be included in there as well. This really isn't a difficult problem to solve. For some reason we just seem to be reluctant to solve it. It's the job of criminal justice systems and governments to enforce laws and make laws that are enforceable. It is not the job of private companies to act as law enforcement or government. Platforms like Twitter, Zoom, Teams, Meet, Facebook feed/groups/chat/comment/WhatsApp/etc, webmail, etc are all communications platforms. They are the digital age version of the telephone. Telephone companies tried to play the same games when telephones first came into existence but we got them under control. We need to treat these platforms as the communications utilities they are. They should have no say over what is and isn't allowed to be communicated on their platform, they are a utility. Policing of content should be left entirely for law enforcement in the appropriate jurisdiction, not a bunch of undertrained casuals on minimum wage. Classification as the communications utilities they are also solves the privacy problem. In the same way your phone company can't listen in on your call without a lawful request from law enforcement equipped with a warrant, so too should these platforms be unable to "listen" in on any communication you have on their platform where you reasonably believe it isn't public. They are then only allowed to benefit from things you choose to make public. Platforms like KZbin, Facebook Watch/Instagram TV, Netflix, Disney+, etc they're the television of the the digital age. In the case of KZbin and Facebook Watch/Instagram TV, they're better compared to a cable TV provider. The same rules should apply. Platforms like AmazonAWS, Microsoft Azure, CloudFlare, IBM and Oracle provide background utility infrastructure for the internet. They should be classified as utilities and impartial about what they host. It's the job of law enforcement to enforce laws. Operating systems that spy on you are a bit more complex to fix. A legislated "don't track me" option at first boot that requests payment for the operating system if enabled seems fair. It's then up to individuals to decide whether they want to pay for the OS upfront or through data collection.

The financial condition of Rockefeller was greatly improved by the break up of Standard Oil - breaking the company up did not mean a change of ownership; it meant he got a percentage of ownership in each of the 37 companies that were formed that was equal to the percentage he owned in Standard Oil. His wealth increased by almost 50%. People don't understand all of the ramifications of what it means to break up a company; one thing it definitely does not mean is a loss of profit to the owners. It was Standard Oil that lowered the cost of fuel & oil to virtually everyone because they had a monopoly and they could do it. I forget the unit of oil but in the 1880s it was $8.00 per unit; after Standard Oil grew so huge the cost was $3.00 per unit which was a huge benefit to the population at large. Even after the break up, the cost still remained lower than the $8.00 per unit it had been 30 years earlier but it did go up. If these big companies are broken up, you will be paying for these "free" services like never before. I don't like monopolies but once they exist, tampering with them could end up costing the average person a lot of money.

I did not know about the existence of the acronym "GAFA" to refer to the 4 largest private technology companies out there: Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple. From the information provided by the video, it seems important to highlight several points: 1) with the closures due to the pandemic, many businesses had to migrate to digital media and there they found these four large companies that have reported enormous growth during this time. 2) The manipulation through the ads on these platforms is an aspect that has a lot of fabric to cut and is also delicate. 3) On the other hand, it was not strange to me when they mentioned that companies did not pay taxes proportionally to their profits. 4) It is interesting when it is mentioned that Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos are currently the equivalent of what John D. Rockefeller was 110 years ago, who had an empire that controlled 90% of the oil in the US although accused of unfair practices, as we have also heard from the big techs. In my opinion, by accepting the security policies that they impose we are susceptible, but it is also in us the way in which we use the technology that we have available.

Every service or product which becomes a monopoly risks becoming a utility as soon as society deems their products or services vital to its success. As a utility, they will be either regulated, so that it can't gouge the public for the benefit of the few or, nationalized so that everyone will benefit from their monopoly market position.

I do not think we should be worried about bug tech monopoly. When needs change preferences will change as well, for example in the near future Facebook will be replaced by Telegram and it will have to give up some of the power to Telegram. Technology seems to produce its own alternatives even when monopolies are formed. I'm optimistic.

Apple's position is actually quite brittle. They could go from being worth $1 trillion to bankrupt in a year since they own almost nothing in the way of assets. The second most vulnerable is Facebook. They could end up like Novell which was once a dominant player but was bought in 2010 for $2.2 billion. Google has more diversification but they are in a similar position to AT&T in the early 80s which ended up getting purchased by SBC for $16 billion. Of the four, Amazon has the strongest position. However, a few key changes would cut Amazon's market share to maybe 25% of what it is now.

One electromagnetic pulse (EMP) at the right lat/long and elevation and all this goes away. If the actions of Big Tech contribute to a grid failure or EMP event, whether by inciting a domestic disturbance or inviting foreign intervention, there will be no irony lost on the fact that if the grid goes down, so does Big tech.

Other Things bother me related to stalking outside of Facebook. No option to hide your follow list or like lists from the public so the choice is to be public or be unnoticed online No option for a private comment on a post. The option should be law, it's like I'm forced to share my phone book with everyone online. I suspect ghosting issues maybe too with odd legal corporate collabs, even on dating apps I suspect corporate departments are looking to stalk their employees and even block them communicating with people. Who has access to private messages, low level army, private security, or police, or even worse Are neighbourhood's watch vigilante groups following neighbour's with spy software, stalking of public follow lists and public messages is something easily improved so it bothers me that private options are not there outside of Facebook to protect me from people trolling my followers lists on other apps like Instagram and tiktok.

They’re a wonderful tool, but so insanely powerful in the modern world that they have the power to make or break governments is frightening. They need to be bought out at a fair price (I can only imagine that price will be in the trillions) and turned into a public utility controlled by an independent government agency like the federal reserve is run.

Such that on a contentious issue, only real people, citizen of EU, would be able to discuss/comment/argue about a topic on social media concerning EU nations and not have to worry about some paid troll pretending to be German or French, is influencing the conversation.* Similar actions should be taken on other regions/countries.
