Poverty and conflict: Could young Mozambican voters spell a change? | DW News

Voters will head to the polls on October 9 in Mozambique in presidential and parliamentary elections that could prove significant for the country’s trajectory.
The ruling Frelimo party dominated Mozambican politics for 50 years and many young voters are expected to look to opposition parties for new solutions.
The country has high poverty levels and fighting continues in the north, where insurgents have been fighting the government for seven years.

@@Эммануэльнесторас Look let’s be real: when we talk about "leaders" it’s basically everyone. This mentality isn’t going to change right now-it takes time. But speaking for myself and my country I do believe things will eventually change. Not now, and it definitely won’t be easy, but I still have hope. As for changing leaders just for the sake of change? That’s as dumb as trying to build a house without a blueprint. It’s irresponsible. You don’t just do something because it sounds good at the moment-you need to plan think about it, and consider the consequences. Otherwise, it’s like jumping into a pool without checking if there’s water first. Yeah, it might seem brave, but it’s also how you end up breaking something. So, I’m not in favor of change just for the sake of change. That’s reckless. We need to aim for thoughtful, well-planned change that actually benefits the people.

@@Tripleaccion7 The point here is not where he lives is he’s ambitions. Just for the record I’m a political researcher in Africans studies! In 2019 the Mozambican assembly approved a law that stated that every “deputado” that was serving for two consecutive terms would cash “4 milhões de meticais” in a poor country with the police, teachers, doctors and nurses are fighting for their paydays you think that’s fair? A guess what Venancio didn’t oppose that. Since you like to point out about housing, a study conducted in 2017 showed a former combatant that has shares of mines in Cabo Delgado lives a regular life and when we researched his sons we saw that the one that mostly controls his father business lives in Alto ma I think I’m right but that neighbourhood is precarious to what we expected of someone that has mines and high connections in the ruling party. So you need to understand that Mr Venancio is a politician, plus all the party’s he left, he left because of his ambition to occupy positions of leadership. That’s he’s main problem, he’s high ambitions to a personal level that he was able to use the grievance and hope of the youth to establish himself in a position of power. Remember the best thing to sell is hope, and the best way to control is fear. He’s not saving Mozambique.
