For anyone reading this, my late mother was the director of the senior citizens center in Altadena, California, where one of the major fires is burning. I've been gone from L.A. for 40 years, but it's haunting me knowing that Studio City, where I went to night clubs, or Santa Monica Blvd., where I used to drive down to the beach, and Hollywood, where my brother once had an apartment at the Fireside Manor are burning. I'm from Lakeview Terrace, where we often had to evacuate. Incidentally, I lived in Lahaina on Maui where a massive fire destroyed that tourist town. I used to stare up at the stars at night on the beach. Orion is as familiar to me as a good friend.

There is a huge, long topographical mountain channel that runs through Nevada to Southern California called the Great Basin. I drive the Great Basin Highway yearly on my annual work pilgrimage to Idaho for summer work. It is a formidable sight. When significant weather systems hit the Pacific Northwest it creates winds that are channeled southwest down the Great Basin into Southern California, gathering strength as the winds are pushed through the corridor. This is how Santa Ana winds are created. The current Santa Ana winds have been particularly and tragically powerful. Southern California coastal regions are essentially deserts with large swaths of dry brush. A perfect storm of conditions for enormous wildfires, especially when combined with human habitation. Sparks from a dragged tow chain, a cigarette, machinery, power lines, etc ignites the dry brush. It happens every year, but the strength of the current windstorms has created spreading wildfires that are almost apocalyptical. My family is currently on watch as we live in a rural, coastal area and have many large and small animals that would need evacuation. We have longstanding plans for how to evacuate efficiently and good neighbors who know how to help.

A sickening preventable waste. Maybe defunding the fire department and dumping all of the water into the ocean to save a fish wasn't a particularly smart idea.

By now my country military would have stepped in amd handled this disaster with locals and national disaster teams Believe me if they wanted they can make that fire Goan This is what we called incompetence and mismanagement

Most humans evacuated but what about the animals. The firefighters should atleast try to save the animals. More than a 1000 animals have died

LAFD was cut 2% to increase funding for LAPD.

LAFD was never meant to fight large wildfires. You need federal and state assistance. Even the navy has sent aircraft to help.

Yeah, we don't give a s*** about a stage for an Oscar. Some of us would light a blunt with that flame. We're more worried about people's lives and homes. The real stars and award winners are the men and women fighting.

How can there be neighborhoods with fire hydrants with no water ? That should be a criminal act . Those burned areas is toxic . Need to close those areas til it's cleared of toxic items .

These fires happen year after year.. in the same exact area. 2.5 million acres burned in 2021.. Unimaginable? They've always been happening, you just haven't paid attention.

my parents have been living in Germany and Austria since 1982 and still can't speak German. I've met people in Japan who have lived there for 10 years and didn't speak Japanese. You would be surprised how easy it is to isolate yourself in your own bubble. There are people from England who move to France, Spain, Thailand and don't learn the local language.

@NoctLightCloud13 сағат бұрын
@@queva3062 what? my parents have *never* accused the locals of being unfriendly to them, because they have simply never been unfriendly to them. Maybe there have been occasional personal disputes, but it wasn't because my parents were foreigners or anything. Also, my parents are the same "race" as the locals. My mom is blonde blue-eyed just like many local women. So they can't be racist towards my parents. Please use the word "racist" accordingly or it will lose any meaning it has left.
