For omnivores, lamb meat may be healthier and more humane than beef, chicken or pork.Lamb is a staple in Mediterranean diets, believed to be the world’s healthiest diet because of its ability to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.Lamb is fairly fatty, and, unlike pork, the fat is not entirely edible - it is more like tallow. This contributes to the high price of lamb, because by the time the lamb is trimmed of its fat and other nonedible parts, the resulting meat is only about 40% of its weight. Another important factor is how the animal was raised.The majority of cattle and lambs are grain-fed to help fatten them up, but their natural food is grass. More and more farmers are raising their animals on grass in pastures, which can improve the nutritional quality of the meat. One study found cuts from grass-fed animals can have up to a third of the fat of grain-fed. And grass-fed animals tend to have much higher amounts of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids; grain-fed contain so little that we've come to think of fish as the only source. Sheep and lambs are less likely to experience the confined factory farm conditions other animals do.Lambs live their whole lives on the farm, eating mostly hay and grass, using a sustainable grazing method that emulates their natural environment. When they are brought to the slaughterhouse at six or seven months old, animals don’t wait around, so they are less stressed. In any case reducing the meat consumption to the minimun if we can't become vegatarians is our solution to many of our major problems humanity is facing,including world hunger.
