France's left alliance leads in election polls, keeping far-right at bay | DW News

Initial projections in the second round of France’s legislative elections have the leftist alliance the "New Popular Front" in the lead. The coalition, which includes Jean-Luc Melenchon’s party "France Unbowed", could get as many as 215 seats. President Macron's "Together" coalition is second, with up to 180 seats. Marine Le Pen's far-right "National Rally" is on course to get a maximum of 150 seats, far short of a majority many had expected. 289 out of 577 seats are required for a political camp to reach an absolute majority. Following tonight's disappointing result for Macron’s coalition, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has offered to resign.

You know whatc happened? Majority was numb about going to vote. But once they saw the prospect of being governed by the far right, they woke up and went to vote. Macron strategy worked partially, he didn't expect the far left to surpass his party.

I only have a vague understanding of the french system, but maybe someone from France can explain. So, 1 party "wins" the first round.... Then, because the other parties decide that they didn't like the result, they make backroom deals to prop up each other to manipulate the voting pattern in the 2nd round. That doesnt sound very democratic, but maybe a french person can explain it?

Le Pen should not move too far to the Center and even expel their German allies. That anger so many of their allies and support both at home and abroad. Just two days ago almost all of their European allies have left her club to join another newly created Patriots for Europe

Patriots you said patriots , is that a new fashion, trend or the like? What’s a patriot particularly when not referring to a country but an alliance no matter how great it is? Words definitions are exploding by the day no matter where, almost.
