Refugee influx due to fighting in Myanmar causes tensions at the India-Myanmar border | DW News

The recent outbreak of intense fighting between rebel groups and Myanmar’s military close to the India-Myanmar border led to thousands of Myanmar nationals fleeing into India in November 2023. Most of the 5,000 refugees returned home. However, Mizoram is currently hosting 31,000 chin people fled the civil war in Myanmar after a military coup in February 2021. While the central government is concerned about the influx of refugees, the Myanmar refugees are welcomed by the local government in Mizoram becaus e of their common ethnicity. Since India does not recognize refugees, they are unable to get work that adds to their hardship. They are surviving with the help of donations from the locals NGO’s. DW visits one of the refugee camps in Champia district of Mizoram where refugees live a life of uncertainty. How safe is India for those fleeing from Myanmar? And does this situation cause tensions between India and Myanmar, too?

No ethnic group with a homeland in the border area supports it. And if it sees opposition from the Mizos and the Nagas it is unlikely that the thing will ever get fenced. Afterall, the Free Movement regime was created understanding the reality of frontier communities such as the nagas and the Mizos and hold no relevance for the Meiteis living far away from it. They can fence their valley all they like, no one is about to oppose it. GOI has too many political as well as economic investments both in Naga and Mizo areas ( kaladan Project in Mizoram and Naga Accord in nagalad) and does not have any desire to offend the two communities for something that happened not even in their state but in their neighbouring state. So this whole saga will either end in the passing of a bill to fence the border but with a huge compromise or the scrapping of such a plan altogether both scenarios will make little change to the border situation.

​@@pipipupu5104 Mizo or even Naga nationalism does not hinge on Myanmar or whatever is happening in that country. Mizoram and Nagaland are not proxies of Myanmar, so the question of separatism is irrelevant. While Nagaland has an active insurgency, Mizoram does not and is the only state in the Northeast without a separatist movement. People tend to treat and view Nagaland and Mizoram as if they are their own countries. Note that both are states within India. Your question is like asking if Gujarat and Rajasthan would see an increase in separatism if Pakistan went into turmoil. The simple answer is no. In fact, one of the main reasons why the Nagas and the Mizos oppose border fencing is because they do not recognize the border drawn by the British. Akhand Bharat, stretching all the way to Southeast Asia, is the dream and aspiration of many nationalist Indians in the mainland. It is a symbolic protest against the British-drawn border that cuts across ethnic and historical boundaries. Likewise, Mizos and Nagas simply do not recognize the border between India and Myanmar. Yes, as Indians, they respect the border; however, they will never agree to it being fenced, as to them, it would mean that they have accepted the British-drawn artificial boundary for which they were not even consulted. In fact, no Indians were consulted when the country was partitioned into several new countries. So, every true Indian must acknowledge that the stance of the Nagas and the Mizos is not only honest but also patriotic and nationalist. You may not see the same level of political stubbornness and resolve among other Northeastern communities. That is simply because other Northeastern communities do not reside in the Indo-Myanmar border, and Mizo and Naga politics are a step ahead of other ethnic politics in the region.

West and East Germany are legally one and their unification is internationally recognized. On the other hand, J&K, Ladakh, AJK and GB is disputed between India and Pakistan, while Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh is disputed between India and China. So, the international media has two options here - either show the de-facto control of disputed territories or show disputed areas as separate. Here DW has essentially done both by showing them separately as well as shading them differently to show de-facto control. I think that's fair enough as it isn't backing the claims of any particular party.

The difference between the Meitei Chief Minister of Manipur and the Kuki Chief Minister of Mizoram is quite contrasting. CM Biren Singh of Manipur was a BSF Jawan and was asking New Delhi to assist his Government in fencing of Indo-Myanmar border during his first term. While the former CM of Mizoram, Mr. Zoramthanga was a former militant and his Government asked New Delhi to keep the Indo-Myanmar border unfenced.
