I finally got out and found some FIRST ICE and I can tell you this was very thin VERY Dangerous Ice!!! I do not recommend doing what I did! Bring a friend and always use a Spud Bar!

Great that you got out on some early ice action. Those lakes with lots of pike up north typically have LOTS of those black spots on them. That thin ice can be pretty scary when the water starts coming up from the hole. I tend to have a rule that when ice is under 3 inches thick I stay in water that's only waist deep!

I'm on the border line with Wisconsin and Iowa so I don't usually get good ice until January. So, I've got the itch really bad by the time I'm drilling holes. I get my fix from watching these videos. I can't always get a partner to go either, but I aint going sit home and think about it either. Be safe out there and have a great season.

Upper red lake is great only about 40 min from me and I've got some great fish out of there first time I ever caught a bass ice fishing was there.
