Working on my A1 today to fix the display that goes off once the amp warms up. The board shows cracks in the solder on the power pins and some of the top row letter pins. Soldering later today. Your video has been invaluable and reassuring when a unit like this is in pieces. Many Thanks,

I purchased my A1 back in 1998 when I was in the Air Force stationed in the UK, it has the same problem with the display, I put it away and bought cheaper Yamaha receiver from Yamaha, and have been using it for a while, I took the DSP A1 back out and hooked it up to my speakers and I forgot how good this amplifier really is, I won't be able to fix the display on my own as my fingers do not bend very good anymore so I will take it to a stereo repair shop and show them the video and see how much will cost to fix it. this amplifier weighs a ton compared to the other Yamaha receivers I have and the sound with the bass is amazing with surround aound. Thank you for posting this video.

It was hooked up to 8 jbl control 1s and some 12inch Yamaha sub.I let the hole lot go for £350 pounds.It now sits in a man cave.It looks a nightmare if it goes wrong.You've got some serious patience repairing that.Great video.

I have 2 of these. Both had display problems and 1 also has muted Left and Right front channels that at first was sporadic but eventually became constant. I was able to fix the display only problem by re-soldering all the contacts, but the one with the muted sound problem is just like your DSP-A1 problem. Now I am almost sure it is the same exact problem. Thank you for a truly excellent and professional Video. Very helpful.

First off, I would like to compliment you on both your craftsmanship and video skills. Very impressive. I have a DSP A1 that has virtually the same issues. I bought mine new approx 18 years ago and have really enjoyed it. I'd like to know if you would be interested in repairing another one, for a fee of course. I recently upgraded to the Yamaha RX-V777BT, but just can't bring myself to throw my old DSP A1 away. Assuming you are in the US. If not, can you tell me how I would go about finding a knowledgeable party to do this type of work. I find folks that talk the talk all day long but when it comes to walking the walk, they can't come through with results.

@nickfatsis96074 жыл бұрын
Good video but just some things to note, when soldering things like this, don’t use a monster sized soldering iron tip like that, it’s much better to use a chisel tip that’s no more than 3mm across, also to me, it looked like you weren’t applying enough heat to the display pins, you must touch and heat up both the pin and the soldering pad in the PCB, then apply solder, the way you did it you might have dry solder joints in the future, the chip socket is a good touch, that’s what I use to make future replacement easy, an easier way to remove pins left behind af you cut them is to heat up the joint and pull out the pin with some tweezers, easy to clean up the pad that way, oh and on the super cap and the chip, you never made mention to be careful of polarity, it’s very important to install theses things the correct way around.
@douglasengle27043 жыл бұрын
When soldering on my Yamaha receiver PCB the tracks would lift with very little heat. He may guarding against this. The solder joints may not be as solid and well formed, but they are likely making good contact enough to ensure contact while a little more heat might cause the track to lift and break off.

Awesome video! I myself found a Yamaha RX-V2090 on craigslist for $10 bucks listed as "Turns on,no sound,selling for parts" So I took a shot at it and figured it was just a fuse that was blown but before I did that,I googled the "no sound " issue and it brought me to your video and listened very carefully to what you were saying.Then when you said these magic words at 12:38 "feed in a signal via the Main in connectors" . I did that and sound came out the main front speaker connections in the rear and the headphone jack! Being that i am not a fan of surround sound or pro logic stuff,I am very happy to use my yamaha as a Power Amp! And i'm also thinking that the IC Chip in my Yamaha is blown,eventually i will take it to a shop to get replaced,but in the meantime i'm enjoying it as a Power Amp feeding it with a Carver Preamplifier. Thank You Very much for posting your video,Very Helpful

A highly professional made video. It was a joy to watch, even though my DSP-A1 does not have these problems. I bought it when it just came out in 1998. Oh well there is one issue: Sometimes the left front channel will remain silent, but after on/off it usually comes up. Did not happen often enough to make me investigate the issue. The Yamaha was expensive to buy, but there was hardly ever any other Hifi component that is of such long lasting satisfaction to me.

You make it seem so easy, I am very impressed with the quality of this video. Very clear and instructive video taking the mystery out of electronics repair. It is not for the fainthearted, but a great inspiration to those of us that have equipment with issues, and nowhere to get them fixed except by ourselves. I have a couple of Yamaha AV receivers, the RX-V367 with a memory issue, and a DSP-AZ2 that does work fine for now. The memory issue on the RX-V367 might be fixable. Thank you!

Professionally made video! Very nice work. :) I have the AX1 amp that had similar problems. Apart from the cap I also needed to change the relays that turns L, R and center on/off. Seems like they oxidized internally. The AX1 also have "infinity" volume-knob and input selector using rotary encoders. The lube for the shafts inside the encoders smears out over time and makes bad contact, leading to very awkward behavior of the volume and input selector knobs. You can carefully pry them open, clean the contacts and put together. Still in love with this old amp and nice to be able to keep it going some time more. Good to see other people also think so.

Nice video. For me, about 50 screws later, I found the memory capacitor on my ancient DSP AX-1 (C175) it had just started to leak its electrolyte, so a lucky save. One bonus of the AX-1 is that Yamaha put a conformal coating on the FUNCTION PCB, so it should be less prone to the capacitor out-gassing and leaking. Mine was hilariously dusty inside, gave it a good clean, it's never had one in the 17 or so years I've owned it :P Looks like new now. I've got four AV amps, I just can't bring myself to get rid of them when I buy a new one. Yamaha all the way, such beautiful construction and attention to detail and that clear, non-tiring sound that keeps me coming back to Yamaha.

Hi ! I have a dsp ax1 as well and the sound starts after is turn up two half! Do you have any idea what could be the problem
@davidhunt2404 жыл бұрын
@@florinflorin3308 apart from the memory capacitor leak problem, the other two major problems are the input board detecting inputs when there aren't any and the speaker relay contacts failing. Take an RCA jack and whilst playing music put the jack in the pre-amp in sockets on the back, the main left and right are the obvious two, you'll need to plug them in and out quite a bit to clear the problem. The relays need the entire amp taking apart, so do the memory capacitor at the same time...

Good video! I gave my sister this amp many years ago and it developed exactly the same issues. I did not replace the audio switch, I just removed the cap and cleaned the corrosion between the pins that caused the problem with the lower display (thus not needing to remove the IC) Many early boards with super capacitor storage suffer from electrolyte leakage which causes corrosion and eats PCB tracks :-(

Great video presentation! Maybe you might have some input to help me with my DSP-A2070. I've searched high and low with no success. The center channel is full of static and seems to be putting out a peaked level (or at least significantly higher than the rest of the channels). To test, I disconnected all speakers, set it to a ProLogic mode, played some music, and connected the speaker to each of the various outputs. Static comes from center only. I then pulled the channel bridges and routed the center output to one of the main inputs, and sure enough, static. So, it seems to be something with the DSP chip or something else internally. So, I've been trying to figure out how to do a factory reset or otherwise a way to reset the DSP. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Bought one on ebay... Had it on 5 minutes and the display went out. Fixed that by fixing the cracked solder joints... But the only way it outputs audio is by having an DSP effect on. If I want a through signal DTS/Dolby digital, no audio. The center channel is out too. Can this be related to the IC5 on the function board? I may just return this one back to the guy I bought it from. Plus it smells like it was in a restaurant or something. I wanted one of these for years. I may try another one. The remote I bought for it doesn't work with it either... As it didn't include one.

Hello bughunter great video. I've a dsp-ax1 with other issues and so does a chap whom also commented with similar issues. I have mentioned if I find the route cause then I would assist him with his amp also with a video etc. Basically it had the memory capacitor issue which was a fairly straight forward fix. Took longer to get the part. The main issue I'm having is the front board command buttons don't function which also doesn't let me activate the main speaker relays a+b. The design is different to the A1 you have. it was the slightly boosted version so the chip you replaced is elsewhere or could be different altogether. are you able to help at all with this? amp is too good to scrap and dismantle for parts.

After viewing this a few time I'm just about to tear down my broken A1 to remove the the display to hopefully fix my other A1 that has been gradually loosing the display over the last 6 months, it was working fun with only a couple segments missing but then it started going off completely from switch on but coming back after a while, I figured it was coming back on after a bit of heat caused the solider joint to expand enough to complete the circuit? But now it refuses to come on. I intend to fully re soldier the other display then swap it into the working unit, do you think I'm doing the right thing ? Could the display fault be caused anywhere else but the display board ? Thanks for posting the video.

Hi Great video!!.....very detailed and well explained.....I have an RX-Z7 and the their are various pixels that are out on the display. I just purchased the correct display board from Yamaha but for some reason it does not have the amber coating on the glass (It's just clear) compared to the original that has this coating so I would lose the amber display look for a white display. Not sure if I want to do that. To further complicate matters all the pins on the original display would probably have to be cut out and all the holes de-soldered so the new on can be installed. I already removed the front panel and have the display circuit board out. I came across your video showing that the display pin joints crack. Could that be causing some of the pixels not to light? I hope so because that would be an easy fix just to go over all the solder joints like you did in the video than to replace the whole display. I have not checked the pins out yet but the unit is 10 years old so that could be the problem. What are the chances of the display being bad compared to the solder joints being cracked.? Thanks in advance!

Bughunter good day, my DSP A1 are into trouble again, i think the video will be my guide. The problem now start again with no digital signal from cd player although it is wired with both rca analog and digital (toslink) to the yamaha amp, also when i switch to surround sound the audio is cranky sounds like a broken speaker in the surround, but normalizes when i switch to stereo only, (effect off). I haven`t check the circuit board for leaking caps or corroded IC yet. Tnx.
