"What if I don't want to have fun?" Reminds me of my father, who when greeted with "Have a nice day!" would grumble under his breath, "Don't tell me what kind of day to have."

I recently played my first games on OGS! I've been watching for a while now but I'm definitely a ddk. I'm still trying to play basics but ddk's openings are insane.
@zimonski52 Жыл бұрын
One simple advise that worked for me, as I was also struggling with insane openings, is to try to keep it solid and get the board to a normalised position as soon as possible. Don't jump aboard the insanity train to compete in a style of game you are not comfortable with.

don't let some balding saltlord's opinions infect your mind this early, just play and damn any notion of "proper play" (interpreted through the lens of a hardstuck fox 7dan)

To be honest I've been watching his channel for a while before I started playing. So I'm probably a little biased already

"Don't you love it when your opponent flails for 200 moves? What's not to like!?" To be fair, against a real 1 kyu they'd probably have won. Hunting for mistakes is a legitimate strategy IMO.

That's what I was thinking. "This is how this player maintains their rank, that doesn't work against Dwyrin but that would have a good chance of working at 2k."
@Zuron Жыл бұрын
Right, if I was playing against Dwyrin in real life I'd resign, because I know he'd just humiliate me more if I tried stuff like this. But if it's against a peer? Maybe they just got lucky and killed my group, which means I can also get lucky and make a comeback. One of the go proverbs of the amateur world is "Whoever makes the last mistake loses."

I love this series, but that's one of the problems with sandbagging games -- a strong player's idea of when the game is over shouldn't be applied to weaker players

One of the first thing I was taught is to not rely on your opponents mistakes. It inhibits your development and may even cap it.
@dangernoodle2868 Жыл бұрын
@@pikestance4219 I remember getting that advice as well, but I think it gives the wrong spirit of the game because the ONLY way you can win is by your opponents mistakes, you just need to make sure your rate of mistakes are slower. However, there's also something to be said about stretching the efficiency of your stones to the limit to see exactly where the breaking point is, which can be a way to improve. Therefore, while it's true that you shouldn't rely on your opponents mistakes necessarily, the advice is limited and myopic in a lot of ways.

For the second player, I would say the most important aspect for him to focus on is when to resign.

I do not put too much stock in the ranking system. It ranks me as high as 2k and I have never beaten anyone higher than 5k. Plus people play games, some resign games they are winning and many play I rank games once they reached a desired rank.
