Dye, Dyed, Died! Walnut Dyeing 3... FALIURE! Well Folks, Sometimes you win some, sometimes you loose some. This video, chronicles one of those losses. Although, not a complete and utter failure, My exact goal was not achieved.
My attempt to replicate my success in walnut hull dyeing UCP/ACU "camouflage" pattern fabric with Cordura nylon pouches, failed miserably.
"IF", you were wanting to attempt this yourselves, please watch this so you can see what you DON'T want to do.

Howdy Folks, With overwhelming number of comments (thousands) I have received over the past several weeks, It has become impossible for me to reply to them all personally as I once did. I took pride in replying to them, as it was personal and I wanted to show my appreciation for all of your support in doing so. I will try to reply to the comments in bulk in this comment I will "pin". I will read all the comments. The Color: After a good bit of reflection, I do like the leather-like brown far better that the original UCP. I would have preferred the dye job to have turned out as it did with the UCP/ACUs. Lightening The Dye: I will be trying a few techniques to lighten the color. Initially I will avoid bleach as it is the most caustic chemical option. Sun bleaching will occur over time while I'm using the items, but I will not be using that technique to lighten the color. The three techniques I plan on using are: 1)Vinegar and Baking Soda solution. 2)Baking Soda and Salt solution. And 3) RIT Color Remover. I will be testing the three simultaneously with checks every 30 minutes. If I do not achieve success with these I will attempt techniques. I will be filming the experiments and will post a video as soon as I achieve success or all of my experiments fail. Walnut Dying consistency: I have walnut dyed fabric for over 30 years. all of the fabrics (including wool) all had varying degrees of darkness and color muting. Inconsistency was always expected as the process was never consistent. I have never attempted to calculate ratios or time, it has always just been me "winging it"! As I had never attempted to dye Cordura nylon before, I had no idea how it would turn out. I anticipated the fabric would not hold the dye. As you saw, it accepted the dye better than any other fabric I have ever dyed. Dye Alternatives: I have been researching other ways to dye UCP fabric. Most of what I have seen "worked" however, I did not personally like the colors. RIT as well as other dye manufacturers have a finite number of colors they produce. None of these "out of the package" dyes on their own are desirable colors (for me personally). I recently discovered that RITs website has a link for "COLOR FORMULAS". There are hundreds of specific colors that you can create by mixing various amounts and colors of RIT dye. I plan on using a couple of the formulas in future UCP dying videos. The website is easy to use and the formulas are straight forward and easy to understand. THIS IS GOING TO BE A REAL GAME CHANGER!!!! Here is the link: www.ritdye.com/color-formulas/ Where to get black walnut hulls: I have had a lot of folks that do not have walnut trees in their area if they can "buy" walnut hulls. I have found multiple sources online. Many sell "Walnut Hull Powder" as a medicinal supplement. These sources are far too expensive to purchase as a dye. This is interesting as that hull powder is exactly the same thing as the hulls sold in bulk for whatever you need to use them for. HULLS FOR DYEING can be found on both Esty and eBay. They are sold dried whole hulls or crushed (to reduce bulk in shipping). All of these sources will need to be experimented with in order to discover the amount you need to achieve the degree of darkness you desire. Prices vary, but a few of them are priced fairly (in my opinion). There is a good bit of work that goes into drying and storing walnut hulls. Night Vision Effectiveness: I was recently contacted by a viewer that has good quality night vision. I will be contacting him soon and will send him the first shirt I dyed to test it's effectiveness under night vision. I will share the results in a future video.

All our South African Defense Force gear e.g. SADF Pattern 83 battle jacket; SADF Pattern 83 Field Pack, "Grootsak" came in a solid Nutria brown, which is similar to the color you ended up with. But after use and time in the sun it should get "houding" (attitude), and become more subdued and patchy. Brent0331 did a video on it - "SADF Nutria Brown Camouflage Effectiveness"

It’s not a bad job. One thing to remember, you want earth tone colors to blend in with your surroundings. In a pinch, you can attach earth tone colored burlap to the Molle webbing to help add camouflage to breaking up your silhouette and blending in with the terrain. That’s all camouflage is, it’s a base layer of earth tone colors to aid with the addition of natural foliage to fully break up your silhouette and disappear into the wilderness. Take the ghillie suit for instance, it was developed by Scottish game wardens for catching poachers in the tall grasses of the highlands. These ghillie suits consisted of earth tone colors. It was after that part of history, that the Scottish and British military had adopted the ghillie suit as their first article of camouflage to be used by military forces, and then the U.S. military had adopted the concept of the ghillie, and still in use to date.

Using the vinegar may have been the issue. It strips away the coating from the fibers and allows the fabric to really take color. The hydration carrier is likely a slightly different quality of fiber which is why it colored like that.

I tried dying my molle ii ruck with Dharma Acid Dyes. That was a fail as it only darkened the already grey camouflage to even darker grey as well as the white contrast from the camo pattern. I then fell back on Rit Dye Apple Green which is already quite bright, but as the ruck was now far darker the end result was an amazing OD/Ranger Green. Instead of trying to lighten the shade of brown consider re-dying with Apple Green Rit Dye, it could turn out a really nice Olive Drab

I know it's not the look you were going for, but it now looks like leather. If the attempts to lighten the gear up don't work, you can always demo how to use rattle-can paint to make it more affective. Still keeping it in the brown and tan spectrum. It is interesting that the cordura took the water based dye that well. Look forward to seeing the ongoing experiment.

Victory favors the bold. Thanks for being honest. The ACU's look awesome. You can always use a laundry net bag for lightening that up with lighter browns and greens rattle can style. It works and actually looks pretty good. It'll smell like paint for a bit but give it a good mud puddle wash and It'll look fit to fignt ;) Sew on some yeti netting on your hat and shoulders with bank line or just plain ole shoe goo and then apply your jute. If all you have is burlap, maybe dye half your strands of jute walnut dyed and half plain. Spray paint the jute if your in a hurry :P That also works. I really like the uniforms...that was pretty damn good. I do have to agree that the new batch of pouches and kit are too dark. Good on you for sharing the results so we didn't have to find out for ourselves. Great idea though! Definitely worth doing for the uniforms no doubt.

After spending 70 hours in those first two weeks replying to comments, I realized it was an impossible task. I work full time, I am raising my grandson, I have my other grand kids at the house frequently, daily chores, tending to the chickens, yard and garden work, planning-shooting-editing-posting videos,... Believe Me I've Got A Lot On My Plate. I have not neglected you personally, please know that. Now To Reply To Your Comment... The dark brown has grown on me and I like it far better than UCP. Since we have lived where I now our trees have produced walnuts. Some years not as many as others and one year all of them were so loaded the branches were almost touching the ground. This year, nothing! I do not know if there is a natural, consistent production rate with walnut trees. I have just felt like with fruit trees some years yield more than others. I Hope Your Tarps Turn Out Great!!! I Will Remain Vigilant! You have a blessed and wonderful day!

Is there a way to get cotton as dark as your backpack with a thicker, boiled down solution of this dye or will the fabric just absorb so much and then wash out regardless? I tried dying a shemag dark brown but after rinsing it looks just like yours.

It seems to me that walnut dye darkens everything. Would it be possible to make black fabric become brown with it? By the way that dark brown can mimic some tree barks, so I would probably take it to stealth camp with, especially the smaller items.

I had planned on mixing in OD and Coyote pouches to break up the darkness a bit. Adding Woodland Pouches is an excellent Idea! Thank you for that! I have done tea and coffee dyeing in the past. It's very subtle but mutes colors well enough to subdue them enough to blend well in the woods.

I've walnut dyed natural fabric for over 30 years. This was my first attempt at dyeing Cordura Nylon. My test pouch was boiled for 4 hours. I reduced the time by half with the second batch. I felt it would be good enough. In hind sight, looking at it every 30 minutes would have been best. So, what type and how much experience do you have with walnut dyeing. I'd like to have a Walnut Dyeing Master to consult in the future. Thank You! Have A Blessed Day!
