Thanks. I'm prepping to do a low water immersion dye on a king size linen duvet cover. Not my first time dying but I've never tried the low water method and I'm shooting for the marbled look. Appreciate the demonstration & that you showed the difference between the dry & wet fabric. :)

Your videos are the best I have seen and love the fact you don't rush. I was wondering what ratio of dye and water you use to make your dye concentrate. My Procion MX dye comes in small jars (just starting out) and they equal about 4 tbsps of powder. It says to mix with 3 quarts of water and 1/4 cup soda ash. Is this the ratio you use? I am dying washed natural canvas for bag making. Thanks in advance.

How much fabric are you dyeing? That will determine how much dye solution you will need. Is this a kit? If so, send me a link and I'll take a look at it along with the info on amount of fabric.

i use salt as my alternative. or another is get baking soda, then heat the baking soda in the oven for at least 30 mins and in 400 degrees, there are tutorials on youtube on how to make baking soda to soda ash :)

Hi I have a couple of questions about dying this way. I am doing a Jean jacket that messed up trying to ice dye. I'm still new to dying. Anyway, I am trying to dye it pretty much solid colored and was told by Darma that it might be best to try low immersion since I didn't want to try to take the color out. I am using procion dye. Dharma Indigo Blue and I was wondering how you mixed your dye into liquid before you added it to the material. Also I would like to know how high the water needs to come up over the fabric?

To mix the dye with water MrTieDye shows the method I use early in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXfNY2tviZt1jMk. You just need a container you can shake that will hold enough water to dissolve the amount of dye you are using. I usually use about two cups of water for 1-3 teaspoons of dye. You can then add that solution to the rest of the water. To determine how much total water you'll need, put the jacket in a bucket and see how much water is needed to totally saturate the it with some room for the jacket to move around a bit. I'd suggest you move the jacket gently from time to time while dyeing. This is because the Indigo Procion dye is a mix of dyes and if you don't move the jacket at all you may see the dye split or separate into it's original colors in some areas. For this reason I'd also suggest adding the soda ash to the dye bath before adding the jacket. This isn't always done in low water immersion but is used to avoid really dark and really light areas of dye. I don't know how dark the colors are from your ice dye experiment but if they are fairly intense be aware that adding indigo over yellow will create green and over red will create purple rather than a consistent dark blue. You mentioned you don't want to try to remove the dye so this is just a cautionary note. Good luck! Glenda

What is the water softener called you use for last rinse?? Pls, what about the product called retayne?

Any supplier that sells dye will also sell the fabric softener. Dharma sells Milsoft, ProChemical and dye sells OROsoft K. You use a tiny amount in hot water for 10 or so then rinse with warm water. It really does make a difference in the softness of the dyed iitem. Retayne is usually used for fabric or clothing you've purchased that you think might bleed. I've never used it for fabric I've dyed.

There are fabric softeners specifically made to use after dyeing. I have used Milsoft from Dharma Trading www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/milsoft.html and PROsoft K from ProChemical www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/milsoft.html and they both work great. Very small amounts are used in hot water then rinsed out in warm.

(3.4 oz or 99 grams) 3.(4.5 oz or 131 grams) I am using muslin to dye with, would like to how much each of: I'm hoping to create a light magenta, from cochineal Tannic Acid (soak) [for ea piece of fabric] Alum & Potash (premordant) [for ea piece of fabric] Soda Ash (when should I use soda Ash here or is necessary) [for ea piece of fabric] why do we use a soaping after the dye. I hope it's not too much to ask you

What do you do if you want to make use of more than one color?

You can try two things. First, use a flatter container like a glass baking pan or kitty litter box, put your fabric in first then add different colors in different areas of the fabric. Make sure that all of the fabric has some dye on it but don't stir. You will have areas of the colors you added and areas where the colors blend together. Second, you can use a mix of colors all together. Dyes travel through the fabric at different rates and while one color of the mix will be more dominant, you will end up with a variety of colors especially if you leave some of the fabric above the water line. Again, don't mix or stir the solution, you want to let the color migrate as it will. The link shows a jacket I dyed this was in a premixed brown dye and the turquoise migrated to fabric that was not submerged in the dye solution. bit.ly/2oUzJ9L As always, you have to test.

I've never used Jacquard products but that is more for the convenience of ordering. You can use Dharma, PROchem and Jacquard products for fiber reactive MX dyes interchangeably.
