Dharma acid dyes - Ceyenne Red, Poinsetta, cherry bomb, oxblood red, chinese red, fire engine red.
Jacquard Acid Dyes - Fire Red, Crimson, Cherry Red, Russet, Scarlet, Vermillion
[2:32] Measuring out the dyes
20 g minis with 0.2 g dye - for 1% depth of shade.
[4:04] The yarn
presoaked in plain tap water
[4:25] Crude Swatches
Just a little dye powder on wet yarn
[6:40] Dyeing the miniskeins a 1% DOS
Add water so there is a similar volume in each cup.
add 20 g of yarn before acid
[12:16] Adding acid
Add 2 tsp white vinegar to each container
set aside for a few days to let the colors slowly bind to the yarn
[15:06] Heat setting the swatch yarn
pour water on top to encourage spreading of the colors
Add a little bit more red and heat for 30 minutes
[17:51] Washing the swatch skein
[20:49] Heat setting the miniskeins after a few days
[24:08] Steam Setting
[25:59] Washing the yarn
[29:05] The dry yarn

I have done a 1% DOS sample on 10g minis - I have a jeweler's scale which can handle low weights. It was annoying to measure, but I got a lots of dye swatches to look at later.

Your videos always make me giggle! that one tsp of vinegar turning into two, I was dying! and the zippies. You are a treasure, Rebecca! Thank you so much for doing reds! I think it's hard to see the differences in reds without them side by side.Easy to tell if you have one that's not quite right, though. I'm ready for greens next. Winter greens, for the win!

Reds really needed the DOS more than other colors I think. Greens need to happen badly!

Something I do with my tie-dye in the winter that I think might be useful for this technique, put the dye protect while batching on *seedling heat mats* (because I am doing tie-dye I wrap my projects in a plastic bag and put them into a plastic tote that I put on top of the heat mat, I am thinking of modifying the tote so I can put the heat mat/s inside and wrapping it all in a a blanket to insulate, but you likely don't need to go that far).

Okay, I think I may be losing my mind. Dharma Fire Engine is the same dye as Cherry Red by Uacquard, and Pro Chem WF red, are the same. However, the milling makes a huge difference!

Milling and other fillers makes a huge difference. I think maybe my "strange batch" of the fire engine red could be a culprit. Also - the total amount of pigment that is used - so if one is more saturated etc.

The vermillion is not close to the color vermillion. Vermillion was derived from powered cinnabar, so it should be a warm red leaning to the orangish red. I like the swatch, but I never would have guessed that it was vermillion. I would like to see swatches at higher depth of shades.

Constructive criticism- why not save a bunch of jars from your recycling and put 6 or 8 at a time in your big pan as a big Bain Marie on your stove top? Then you can test your colors at the same conditions you actually use them (hot). When I do this, I also can swirl the jar and I get good even coverage of dye on the yarn. Here, you don’t know how solubility issues might change the final outcome in cold vs hot conditions. Likewise, what about final behavior of the dyes that you say need heat to develop. Is final color different in your cold bath method? 12 colors is not many samples to do in bain Marie method, although when you do big color mixing tests, I can see the advantage of cold method. But honestly, Bain Marie is so much faster, easier and just “all done” in one step in about an hour.
