The superwash roving is my favorite to spin with from knit picks
@ChemKnitsTutorials7 жыл бұрын
Oh awesome! I've spon some other superwash fibers in the past. My current favorite was a BFL/Silk mixture. that just practically spun itself.
@rachelhasgp7 жыл бұрын
Oh awesome! I've been watching you for years, you first inspired me to try spinning with a drop spindle. I'm getting my 1st wheel very soon and looking forward to being more adventurous and trying new fibers to spin
@ChemKnitsTutorials7 жыл бұрын
That's amazing! One one of my spinning sessions I want to see if I can remember how to spin with my drop spindle. I don't think I've used it ever since I got the wheel.

Before you started squishing the dye into the roving - it looked like ice cream with flavoured sauce on top (blueberry, strawberry and caramel) hehe :). The roving turned out lovely though, such beautiful colours. I can't wait to see you spinning it up soon! :)

It didn't go as planned, lol. I sent you a few pictures on instagram. I'm going to try again tomorrow with a different plan! :)

you could try putting the roving into mason jars when you're applying the dye - that way you can get all the color in, even add more liquid if you need to (in terms of acid/water combo) and reduce the risk of the color going everywhere. You could also microwave the yarn inside the jars as well which may be helpful, and change the outcome of your roving!
@ChemKnitsTutorials7 жыл бұрын
I've only done mason jars once, and not to create a multi colored yarn. I forgot that I wanted to play around with that more. Thank you!

Hi Rebecca, your videos are always fun to watch, it would be fun that you do a video when you will spin this roving yarn, so we could see what will be the result once spinned. thanks again for those videos!

The issue with dying superwash is that because the scales have been removed from the fiber it has a tendency to "fly away" or drift apart in the bath. You have to be almost more gentle with it in certain ways even though it won't felt. The fibers won't stick to themselves so they stick to everything else. The reason I like superwash is you don't have to worry about temperature shocking it and I can go from start to finish much faster and I don't have to be super vigilant against simmering bubbles. I can't wait to see how it spins up. Happy spinning!
@ChemKnitsTutorials7 жыл бұрын
I"m pretty bad about simmer bubbles. The one time I had an issue is when I had to wash the wool too much. You teach me so much, Fern. Thank you!

No problem. I know I can come across as a know it all, and that can be irritating to some people. I just want to be helpful by sharing the things I've learned. It means a lot that you've found my comments useful.

I absolutely find them useful, and I know that others do, too. You often comment about something that I meant to include but forgot, so I LOVE that you add it to the comments field. :)

What would happen if you began with warm or very warm water in the cups in which you are mixing the dye? I believe the gel dye would dissolve into the water a little quicker or easier and would not remain on the spoon. And when you added the roving to the dyepot, then added the dye mixture, would it react differently?
@ChemKnitsTutorials7 жыл бұрын
That would probably work nicely! I didn't really think about using warm water to mix the dyes, but that makes sense.
@ooohlaa137 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention this also. Some sites use boiling water, very hot water or warm water and it seems to dissolve all types of dye with speed and ease. Worth a try.

The colors look great. I'm thinking about trying your orange combo for dyeing yarn for my fall leaves yarn. I still haven't picked up the Wilton copper which is on my list along with a good Wilton Red. I like the way the orange color had the green tones as well as the orange/brown. That would be perfect for fall leaves. I love how the pinks turned out as well. Awesome job. I have mostly kettle dyed my roving and I have had one get slightly felted but it spun just fine. I have never used superwash roving so it is more challenging to keep regular roving from felting (I think). I have done a little hand painted roving and I never had it felt just from pushing the dye through. Never say never, though. ;-) Here's a tip for cleanup. Barkeeper's Friend cleanser works great to clean up stains. I haven't had it scratch for me. It is better than anything else I have found for cleaning stains and dyes.
@ChemKnitsTutorials7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that tip! My counter seems to be find, thankfully. :) I love to kettle dye roving, too. I've only had an felting issue once (video is coming out later this year) but the fiber is still spinnable for sure.

Have you seen the Crayola bath tablets? I got some for my daughter, there's citric acid and dye in them. I think they might work like egg dyeing tablets.
@mary-ruthflores41074 жыл бұрын
I think the green in the pink sections is from your gloves after handling the orange, you didn’t clean your gloves. It is a very interesting look, I think there are no mistakes in dying, just opportunities!!
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
There is a bit of color breaking in here for sure from the way I mixed up the colors. Combinations tend to break into the various components. But it could also be my gloves for sure!
@loue65635 жыл бұрын
Have you ever hand painted one side one color and then flipped it and added a different color?

Do you have a vidoe using only neon colors? I thought I watched one but I can't find it. thanks
@ChemKnitsTutorials7 жыл бұрын
You mean McCormick Neon colors or just getting neon tones in general? I love McCormick's NEON food coloring (especially the neon blue) and that has been used in many videos over the years.
@shymoment7 жыл бұрын
I knew I had seen you use the neon colors but I thought they were always mixed with something else. I wondered how they came out by their self.
@ChemKnitsTutorials7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I have used these on their own. Maybe the purple once upon a time... but I'll have to do that soon! I'll add a Neon Painting adveture to my list. :)

I would love that. My son is wanting a neon scarf.

How long do you soak in vinegar
@ChemKnitsTutorials6 жыл бұрын
A minimum of 20-30 min to make sure the fibers are saturated. Sometimes I'll soak fibers overnight so I can get started right away in the morning.

It might be helpful to change gloves between the colors.
@ChemKnitsTutorials7 жыл бұрын
Yup. Something I always realize midstream. Thankfully wiping them removes most of the color.
