It's hard to believe how green that yarn still is. I thought when it came out of the gunmetal bath the whole ball would be black, but NO.... You know what you're doing and I shall never doubt again. Much. Thanks for the fun.

Sometimes I know what I'm doing, othertimes things don't behave quite as I expected. ;) But thank you!

Omg i JUST did this, but with koolaid - inspired by your egg dye tablet video. I was even going to message you, hahah! I put the koolaid powder in the middle of the cake and got that speckled result all over and not a lot of solid color - not expected! So! I did this! I LOVE my yarn even though its not what i thought it would be. Now this is one of my favorite techniques. Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful! I think this is my favorite way you dye. Love seeing the middle.

Thank you so much, Sharon! This is a really fun way to dye that's for sure!

My first attempt at dyeing yarn was with cakes and the hardest part was getting them to dry! I had them all on a cookie sheet with a towel on it amd each cake aimed so the fan I had on them would catch the centre hole.... I made sure to open the holes in the middles before I dyed so the centre core got some, though I was dyeing something where only 15% of the fibre content was taking up the dye. But it made it far more interesting than the grey it used to be. And I figured out how to hand-wind cakes using a paper towel tube! I love how the gunmetal colour made a starry sky with its resists :) I'm guessing you could get more colour throughout if you were to squish it out a bunch of times during the dye absorption?

I let the yarn cakes dry a couple of days and then while a little bit damp I unwind them. You could get more color if you squish the yarn cake... maybe. It depends on how fast the yarn strikes, because the yarn itself is almost a filter as they dye moves through. It is so much fun!

Have you ever tried to dye a cake by dyeing the bottom half of it first, then turning it over and dyeing the other half? I imagine some issues may arise with burning the yarn so some fun dye methods may be necessary. I’d be super interested to see how that would come out! I really love the yarn you dyed here too, of course.

This has sort of happened with yarn cakes in the past, the top andbottom often look different. I have done this intentionally a long time ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anmulHmhjpVgnLc but with commercially wound balls of yarn.

Have you ever inserted a hair curler or other porous "stent" into the middle of a cake so the dye could penetrate from the inside & outside at the same time?
@ChemKnitsTutorials5 жыл бұрын
No... and now I'm wondering if I have any of those curlers left.... I'm going to write this down!

Oh my goodness!! I love how this has turned out. So glad you didn't put this on in an actual cake!! 😁 Happy happy birthday Ells and Flora!
@ChemKnitsTutorials5 жыл бұрын
LOL! I don't plan on ever putting on in an actual cake ever again. Although I never laughed as hard as I did when filming that April Fool's Video. :D

So I had done this on a hot day and stuck the yarn outside in the sun, it dried pretty fast and used a toilet roll to roll it back again and dyed the other side, turned out pretty good, also if you do a ball next that would be awesome 😍

:D kzbin.info/www/bejne/on-mZmyor7OMatk It could be fun to do a cake followed by a hand wound ball though....

I do have a few "dyeing to knit" videos where I show finished projects in the end. Unfortunately I don't have the opportunity to knit with most yarn.

I have crocheted a lovely Phoenix blanket with Peaches n cream white yarn. My daughter was sick and left a popcycle on it and stained 2 sections. This is a large bedspread that covers a king size bed. I saw your videos and love the colors and it has inspired me to try! I would LOVE to try and dye it but have never dyed anything. How would you go about doing this? I love antique looking colors - the ones my gram did with tea I think. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I have done this process in pink and green. I just hated winding the cake while wet
@ChemKnitsTutorials5 жыл бұрын
I agree, that part isn't so much fun. I LOVE the spin dryer - it at least makes things damp versus having water flinging everywhere.

It would be amazing if you could show a swatch of the yarn to see the repeats!
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, for a gradient yarn like this I'd have to knit up the entire skein! I'd love to include more swatches, but currently I don't have the capacity to include swatches in ever video. Today's will have a swatch, though! :D

If I could afford to I would sponsor you to do this again but use a brown with the green, but I am on a disability income. Do you ever consider using someone's idea without sponsorship? Your work is lovely Rebecca, and I would love to try doing this myself sometime soon!
