The other thing could might consider, is adding the citric acid or vinegar at the end of the process rather than in the beginning. You will likely see slower striking of the colors.
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Oh for sure. I often add vinegar to the pot first for tonals, but often add the yarn before it has heated up. I think I wasn't thinking at first when I started. :D

I'm about to start my dying journey!! Just ordered my wool and decided to trial using Rit Fabric powders. I was thinking of using them with citric acid, but kinda want to trial with vinegar too. Would be interesting to see the colour variation. Thank you for your amazing videos! I've been binge watching them the last 2 days

Citric acid works great, a lot of dyers prefer it to vinegar. :D Good luck and have fun!

I wonder how you would prepare and dye a cotton cashmere blend of yarn. Dye as a cotton or ad a protein base?
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
It might be best to use fiber reactive dyes - since those can dye both cotton and protein. But I'm not sure. I have some samples of some wool/cotton blend. I've dyed wool/viscose from bamboo using both tie dye and acid dyes with nice results. Wih the acid dyes it is a bit heathered. I think ultimately it depends on the ratio of fibers.

ChemKnits Tutorials thank you Rebecca. I’m going to experiment with some fiber reactivate dyes 😊

I personally wouldn't alternate these two skeins in the same piece because one is so organic looking and the other fluorescent and modern looking. I am keen on this because some of my dye jobs from nature (avocado and eucalyptus for instance) just would not mix with other things I acid dyed, they were just too subtle and DOS way off. But not being an orange person like so many others here, I do love both of these outcomes nevertheless.
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Oh with the four I wouldn't alternate. But with the two of the "same" colorway that is what I'd do. If that makes sense. I might fade the two colorways together at a transition for fun, but I would use them separately.

Hi can you try dyeing natural hand spun art yarn with this method please ❤️
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
I generally prefer to dye fiber before I spin it versus dyeing it after it has been spun if we're talking about hand spun, but I'll add this to my list of ideas!

Yes! You can speckle an already dyed colorway. This is a perfect candidate for some speckling.

@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sonya, If you want a layered look like this, then I would dye the two skeins at the same time in the same pot. (Even if you're doing two rounds.) If you have a combination of cherry, orange, and lemonade you could get some colors similar to what I had here. I would probably use a LOT of lemonade, a tiny bit of cherry, and maybe one packet or orange. Just estimating off the top of my head.

hi Rebecca, thanks for all the awesome videos. I was wondering what was the best way to keep your skeins from tangling.... my skeins are a mess.... thanks so much...
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
I like to use reusable nylon zip ties on my skeins. Even if things get a bit tangled I have a starting place to untangle once the yarn is dry. (I always wait for the yarn to dry to re-order the skein - it is much easier.)

So pretty however u did it 😁 but I don’t understand a lot of the terms u use lol like what exactly breaking means and tonal and so many others lol 😝 A lot of us don’t have ur education history lol maybe do a vid about all the terms and techniques u use and tell us the definitions 😋
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
I definitely need to do this. Breaking is when you have one color mixture (say purple) and you see the colors separate in to different parts. So breaking apart into pink and blue or in this case breaking into pink and orange. A tonal yarn usually refers to a subtle colorway when there are multiple shades of one color.
