Hi Rebbeca, We can take 3 paquet of koolaid, put it in a squeeze bottle to dilute it and have the same concentration for cheapper. With the squeeze bottle, we can probably have a result similar of this dye pot weekly... What do you think? Love the result of this dye pot 😉❤️🧶
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Anne-Marie - Absolutely! What you're suggesting should give EXTREMELY similar results to what I got in this video. (Or even mixing some orange food coloring with vinegar in a squeeze bottle.) The KoolAid liquid is expensive for the amount of food coloring in there.

Made such a cheery color! I've been thinking of making microskeins using the individual to-go packets of beverage mix from the dollar store. So far for dyes I've seen blue 1, red 1 and yellow 5 and 6. The blue colors the water such a pretty color I'm curious what it would do to yarn. Thinking of just doing it in jars. Any thoughts?
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Jars would work well! YOu can let it sit for a few days and then steam set or microwave. You likely won't find a drink mix with anything besides those ingredients. Red 3 doesn't do well in acidic conditions so it isn't used in drink mixes.

I LOVE the orange Koolaid color‼️ But I have only been able to find one package‼️😭😭
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
I feel like the color is VERY consistent with just orange food coloring (color right base orange even.) You could make your own "koolaid" with some citric acid sprinkles. ;)

Another great video, Rebecca. If you had less water and turned less quickly, would it spread less and the speckles be even sharper?
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Potentially, yes! I think the bigger factor is that there was no acid to start. If I wanted colors to strike faster I would add vinegar to the pot to start with. I was afraid of the colors running out so I wanted them to spread a little bit. :D

Great job do you think it would be different if you moved the fluid to a bigger bottle and diluted it the “dye” have you compared different yellows with the same number from different sources?
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
I have dyed with a lot of food coloring over the years. The main differences are with the other fillers in the formula - how liquid or viscous it is. Yellow #6 is the same molecule wherever it is found. BUT the difference in citric acid from different drink mixes could make one better for speckling than another. I like the color right formula from wilton better than the formula from americolor because the wilton dissolves easier in water. (BUT I can see chefs liking Americolor better for icing, so it isn't DESIGNED to dissolve in water.) Diluting the dye more would result in more even color coverage on the yarn, which would also be super pretty.

My favorite winter hat knit with the first wool yarn I ever dyed ~10 years ago is still super vibrant! I used KoolAid + food coloring for the project. (There isn't a video, but it is on my blog!) It doesn't get washed often, but I wear it a lot every winter and store it in the closet when it's not on my head.

I’ve never dyed with Koolaid, but I live in the town where it was invented. (Interesting fact: it was first called Koolade, but had to change the name because “ade” implies fruit juice, and it has none.) We have Koolaid Days here every summer, and the sweet smell can really get to you.

i'd really like to try this to make a ramen costume! is it okay to use colored yarn? would it only work with non dyed yarn?
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
You can absolutely overdye pre-colored yarn. Just make sure that you're using a wool (or other animal fiber) based yarn. This won't work on acyrlic/polyester, or on plant fibers like cotton.

The weird smell is probably from the chemical sweeteners that are in those little concentrates. I dislike them too for that reason.
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Maybe.... but I also just think it is from the intensity of the orange flavor. there are some things that are good dilute that are too overwhelming when you see a lot at once. ;)

I almost did this. But this koolaid stuff is *so* expensive for messing around like this
@ChemKnitsTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I don't recommend doing this for the cost reason for SURE. You could get similar yarn with food coloring and citric acid. I mainly did this video because I get a lot of questions about whether or not it will work. However, just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD. ;) Although for some people this is the only type of KoolAid they can find and they really want to play with it, so in those situations it could make sense.

I'm not crazy about the single use plastic, either. I wonder why so many companies are switching to the drops versus the jars. I suppose this is less plastic than a larger tub maybe?
@vmtracy4 жыл бұрын
@@ChemKnitsTutorials Honestly, I think it's more about the convenience of adding the drops to bottled water. All of the drops--at least every brand I've looked at---are artificially sweetened, btw. I suspect that's the source of the different smell.
