What a difference! You really enhanced the existing colors without completely covering them, which would have been my inclination, but I really like how it turned out!!

What does the yarn that you over-dyed look like? Could you add a swatch of the different types of yarn? Noro does this. Thank you!

Unfortunately I don't have the capacity to swatch every skein I dye at this time. I wish I had time to do this more often!

Thank you for your time! I was looking for yarn swatches such as with Smooshy, Frabjous Fibers, Hedgehog, etc, so when I buy those yarns, I could imagine how they would look in shawls that my friend makes for me.

This yarn turned out great! It looks so spring like (or maybe even Easter?). I had to smile when you got to test the synthropol (I think I spelled that wrong). It worked a lot faster than I expected.

Whoa! Okay, I've gotta pick up some Synthrapol. That cleared FAST!
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
It did, I was surprised. I think that soaking with the synthrapol helps, but in other videos with these same exact dye colors, I didn't see a huge difference between the synthrapol and the dish soap (DPW 289 I think was the backstaining on cotton video) I'm realizing that the Turquoise tie dye color is one of the biggest bleeders and one that I struggle with the most. I intentionally avoided that for this little series of videos. :D

This is very cool! Your over-dyed yarn is so much better than the original, IMHO! I do wonder if you dyed the original in blue dye, would the pink turn purple, the yellow turn green and the blue turn bluer?
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
Potentially! It really depends on the final proportions of color,

Would the commercial fiber active dyes have the soda ash in them?
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
No, not yet. Dharma has a recipe for making your own "one step" tie dye (they give ratios of dye to soda ash to urea) but I have no idea if there is urea in these or not. Or the ratios really, just that the dyes aren't THAT pigmented.

I love this final color. Now since you used tulip dyes why did u need the respirator? So could this speckle technique work with the liquid form of the tulip dyes and then steam it like you did? Also what exactly was the wash liquid stuff you were using instead of the dish soap? I couldn’t quite catch what you called it. Hope to hear back! 😊
@ChemKnitsTutorials Жыл бұрын
Lots of great questions! I put on my mask whenever I'm dealing with a dye powder to protect my lungs. Tulip doesn't mention using a mask with their instructions, but professional fiber reactive dyes recommend it. Plus, since I have the safety equipment, I may as well use it, right? In the past I didn't use them. Liquid dyes would spready out more, so you would get larger patches of color. However, you 100% CAN use liquid colors. I probably used some synthrapol, which is a neutral pH soap made for dyers. I don't love it as much as dish soap, I find it really dries out my hands when I use it. I tend to use dish soap more because that is cheaper.

Over the years I have done tie dye with my kids and have lots of fiber reactive dyes. I also bought acid dyes this year, inspired by your great videos. What process would you use to dye one skein of wool using fiber reac and acid dye at the same time?
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
I haven't done this myself yet, but I would treat the fiber reactive dyes like acid dyes for dyeing wool. That's how other dyers have done it.

Oh man....not sure if I missed it or if you don't do it, do you put vinegar or citric acid to help set the colors for cottons etc Plus when I was young, eons ago, my Mother taught us to soak new clothes ( or fabrics for sewing) in saltwater to set the dyes (washable fabrics) esp, reds, blues and blacks.
@ChemKnitsTutorials3 жыл бұрын
You don't use vinegar or other acids with cotton. This dye has soda ash mixed in it so you don't have to add anything.
