I was really impressed with the variety of light and dark patches. I thought for sure it would dye in a more uniform way.

So to dye has what, because it will look spun quite different. I guess times a lilaton, quite dark I think. I dye my raw fleeces constantly multicolored and am always happy about the result. And I'm happy when others dye like that too. It was nice to watch. Thank you!

Oh, how I wish I could see this beautiful roving spun up! Actually, I would love it if each skein was spun by a different spinner, to see the variation in the way they each distributed the colors.

My first time dying fiber, I did a cool vat style color way to limit the chances I'd felt it. And I love the lofty teal BFL yarn I got out of it.

Cool vat is a great way to start out with fiber! I also sometimes put the fiber inside a pasta insert so I can remove it from the pot in a gentle way.

It's definitely more bright magenta-pink than most broken violet colorways I can recall, but I feel like there are some bases that grab up the pink incredibly quickly and end up with very pink-leaning purple areas. This is like that, but with more pink over all of the fiber. It's definitely something to keep in mind for when you want something in that vein, but want more pink. It would be great to have an acid-dye version of your signature food coloring colorway (I'd say your signature acid dye colorway is the neon rainbow).
@ChemKnitsTutorials

I agree, I want to see if I can get closer to the classic broken violet. WHen I went to pull screenshots from other videos I realized that it wasn't quite blue enough, but it was fun to feel that similar excitement!

Super interesting Rebecca. I do think one has to be careful what fibre you use . Merino would felt quickly. I’m wondering if Bfl superwash would work. I dye a fair amount of it and it can take quite a beating.
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials Жыл бұрын
I should try this with superwash for sure. I haven't dyed 100% merino often enough - I still get nervous when dyeing roving!

@@ChemKnitsTutorials merino scared me for a while. It needs such gentle handling Bfl is a good fibre to dye be it super wash or non super wash.

great video! will def try...thankyou, However, why was the other skein fluffier? was it pulled apart a bit in the chain?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure from where you're talking about, but I did fluff up one skein to show the difference maybe? I don't remember exactly if I did that at one point. Othertimes it could just be based on the amount of compression I had in the fiber.

@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
One fun thing about roving is that you can do a splotcy tonal with roving and then as you spin and draft it the colors will blend and become so soft. (Soft colors are fun, too! I was just surprised with how soft my attempts at speckled roving have spun up.)

May I ask a daft question? I hear you calling this roving, but that to me is wool top. Do you call it roving in the US? I’m in the UK, hence the question 😅
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
I think that many people would call it wool top vs roving, I just use roving as a catch-all (likely VERY incorrectly) for unspun fiber. KnitPicks markets it as roving, which is maybe why I started calling it that? This is one of the issues with being self taught with spinning....
@eleanor.shadow
@eleanor.shadow 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChemKnitsTutorials thanks for replying! My question definitely had a lot to do with KnitPicks marketing it as roving... So, for anyone reading wondering what I'm on about, here goes a little explanation: wool top has all the smaller bits of fibre removed, and it's all combed in the same direction; roving still retains some of the shorter fibres and it goes in multiple directions, thus being less "smooth" looking. This is how we classify it in the UK, and I wasn't sure the US did it differently (which apparently it does!) :)
@ChemKnitsTutorials
@ChemKnitsTutorials 2 жыл бұрын
@@eleanor.shadow I've 100% had people in the US comment on me calling it roving before! I think that some of the roving even says on it "xxx combed top" but they call the listing roving. Maybe roving shows up better in search results?
@eleanor.shadow
@eleanor.shadow 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChemKnitsTutorials oh, interesting! Maybe it’s one of those things that just slips into common lexicon and then becomes a norm, like calling paper tissues Kleenex? 😅 Also, yes - if selling wool top, also using the term roving in a listing will yield more results, because SEO is all about people using the words instead of what they really mean 😆
