But he could only get that result if he threw the punch as a straight right. It's kinda like how restrictions make kuripikas abilities stronger. Same with gon when he takes his Stance and says "first comes rock..." that's his ritual to start the attack and it makes it way stronger. Like how Netero prayed before he punched to make it fast as hell

I'm not sure I agree with Luffy. He makes extremely good use of being made of rubber which only sounds simple on paper. The ability is extremely complex in practice. The gear techniques have various uses from increasing his size, raising his blood pressure and increasing his bodies elasticity. He also uses every single type of Haki in the series. The only thing he ignores is weapons, but having the main character being better at everything than his companions would be pretty boring.

Let's be real. Goku doesn't have an original move in his life. Every skill he has was something he was taught or copied from someone else. I think having simple powers for an MC is fine because it gives the writer the opprotunity to find more creative ways to use such powers. Luffy's power is being made of rubber, which is pretty straightfoward, but he's able to do some creative things like gigantify his limbs, increase his speed by pumping his limbs to increase bloodflow, generate fire and static elictricity using friction, make his punches into homing punches, and even fly using pressurized kicks to bounce off the air. Another example is Jolyne, who can unravel herself into strings, but she was able to prevent being turned inside out from gravitational inversion by unravelling herself into a moebius strip. It doesn't really matter if your power is simple or "boring." What's important is making your power feel "complex" or exciting by having the character's simple powers be used in creative ways.

Allen Walker from D gray Man and Recca Hanabishi from Flame of Recca had the most interesting yet simple ability of all the shounen mangas I read. Their powers are rooted from a curse. Allen being able to see the trapped souls within a demon. His innocence weapon the crown clown is a really creative ability. Recca's flame dragon spirits are past flame masters who died with regret. The most endearing will always be Yusuke Urameshi from Yuyu Hakusho and Joe Yabuki from Ashita No joe.

@kevinallen9327 Yup. Master all four elements to beat Ozai before the end of summer. It’s a great central conflict that adds a ticking time clock. Plus the training wasn’t easy. Fire and earth being difficult for Aang, pushing him mentally and spiritually. That’s something I find if you want to have a Shonen style protagonist is a must. Never make it easy. Challenge them and have the resolutions be consistent with who they are and having changed as a result beyond their power. It’s why I loved Sage Mode so much for Naruto. He gained wisdom and insight and grew up.

Law of ueki is really interesting. Basically it has three seperate systems with one system completely blocked off from humans. The first is talents which is what it sounds like. You immediately become a master at the highest degree at something. Like being able to parkour or guess what someone is thinking by facial expressions. Talents can be lost if you attack unsanctioned opponents and earned by defeating sanctioned ones. When you lose all of them you are sent to hell. The second is powers which can turn someone into somthing else, like trash to trees or one second into ten seconds. Powers can evolve into a stronger concept while still having access to the original power.

Main protagonists generally aren't meant to be a "Jack of all trades" type character unless the author can find a way to make it more clever than just "Doing all the things" somehow, because if the MC doesn't have clearly defined limits they're not interesting. It's not just about relatability, but more importantly it's about believability. Supporting cast and antagonists can more believably be capable of doing more because we don't have to see them learning every ability on screen, but we are supposed to see almost everything significant that happens to the MC from beginning to end of their journey. If they learn a new power somehow, it should come about in a way that doesn't feel too contrived and feels like a natural progression of the plot. Admittedly this is difficult to pull off and there are many shonen battles that can be boiled down to the MC suddenly gaining exactly the power they need to counter their current antagonist (Giorno Giovanna I'm looking straight at you), but generally speaking readers/viewers resonate with the journey of the MC and this is achieved by limiting the scope of the MC's powers so as to keep them as a believable underdog finding a way to win against all odds. MC's also generally aren't stupid. They may not be book smart, but there's other kinds of intelligence and Shonen MC's very often have two particular kinds of smarts: Social smarts that help them to form believable bonds with others, and combat smarts that help them to gain the upper hand in battle using the tools and allies available to them. Book smart characters have to be handled very carefully with Shonen battle MC's because a big part of the journey is them learning along with the reader/viewer, so if they already know too much it can take away from the experience. Such things are usually reserved for antagonists and mentor characters.

@DygoKnight I actually think Naruto had the potential to have some complex abilities in his 6 paths sage mode, but Kishimoto was in a rush and a we couldn’t see as much as he would’ve liked to show. Also I don’t know how far you’ve read into One Piece but Luffy’s powers are easily the most entertaining and creative despite being simple. His most recent power up every attack is unique from another, he’s had it for 60 chapters and has yet to use the same attack twice, and the way Oda draws it is incredibly wacky and unique. You said his power is just stretching, but just stretching allows him to do anything his imagination can conjure. I'd say the protagonist from chained soldier has a pretty complex power(in comparisson with shounen), he can transform into a monster that can punch really hard, but early in the series the main cast finds that he can combine his powers with the others to create a unique transformation and a new set of powers. That way the main cast can aproach different situations in a variety of ways and you always are guessing what powers will come from other characters. Also, despite the great variety, they don't always have access to the strongest combinations, which helps avoid power creeping abilities out of relevancy.

It's also partly so you can get people into the side characters. The protagonist automatically has our attention since they're the person from whose perspective we see everything. We're invested in them by default because without them, we have no show. They don't need much else to get us behind them. The side characters, on the other hand, have to earn our attention. They could potentially be cut or lost at any moment, so if we're to remember them, they need to stand out somehow. Yes, characters are more than their powers, but in a genre defined by fighting, cool and unique powers are a good way to get us interested in a side character early on, so giving them more while the main character gets less makes sense from a story and character standpoint. Also, a protagonist who breaks this trend really well without taking too much away from the other characters is Kōsuke Ueki from Law of Ueki. A really underrated show where the MC's power is basically an eco-warrior's dream, turning trash into trees. It's a good show and I think more people should talk about it.

Dragon Ball Super is oversaturated with the variant SSJ transformations with the different color palettes, and with the new Beast Gohan and Orange Piccolo in the new movie. It gets boring and dull which is why Toriyama himself is heavily involved in making DB Daima, going back to the basics with Goku as a kid again along with his friends using nothing but his skill as a martial artist and wits.

You just described why some of these characters are popular despite having shallow move set its how they use their moves. Example Naruto at times would use his clones to turn into various things to out smart his opponent. Before he became ki spam happy goku actually came up with his own fighting style to counter roshis drunken style. It's how they use their limited tools that makes their fights interesting

They may not have the most overpowered skills but they do have the most powerful skills of them all. Power ups aside, punching power and explosive power is definitely every shonen main character's main selling point. Defeating foes in one hit is a trademark of most of these shonen protags. It's probably why it's keeping it simple. Too bad they couldn't have more skills in their hands. Probably why people were upset when Naruto came back no different than his previous 3 years journey.

Though one issue that can come up with the shonen manga way of handling powers is there's a risk of writing yourself into a corner. If the protagonist's powers are TOO simple and he's up against a villain with extremely varied powers, you run the risk of the hero having no way to defeat the villain. Like, imagine pitting a guy who can only punch stuff against a villain who is made of something that bare go right through without damage (like light or mist). This has led a few manga series to get into situations where the author had to pull something out of his arse to beat the villain.

A main character can be versatile if they are written via Future Story Sight already or have vast experience being a mentor for an inexperienced partner character the main character has to mentor throughout the story. Main Characters can also be versatile in the story's beginning ,but also have a lack of understanding of the powers they have until later like Boruto from Boruto Next Gen or Gon from hunter x Hunter.

Dygo Knight is not a power scale, but if you want to hear my thoughts, Gojo scales to island level through Dagon's DE, and Kakashi scales to multi continental Bijuu bombs, and Kamui counters Infinity, and there is a big speed difference, Gojo has massively hypersonic speed, and Kakashi has FTL due to upscaling drom Haku who can move at lightspeed stated in the databook, and Kakashi can dodge DE and Kamui Holliw Purple away, so yeah Kakashi basically stomps

I think main characters having 'boring' powers is a trope for a reason. It introduces the reader to the power system and engages them. Later when people come in different and OP stuff, it makes the MC fight harder or learn how to apply their basic powers in different ways. It gives the MC room to grow and expand.

I don't think Goku or Luffy should really be on this list for the simple reason that their not as simple compared to the people in their verse. Luffy's bag is deep. He's capable of using advance application of all haki, his 5 gears, and rukoshiki. His powers are arguably the most complex in his crew. Him and Goku are pretty simple but compared to their verse they're mid at worst. People like Yuji, Naruto, and Ichigo on the other hand need to be arrested. Yuji needs to get life without parole. Naruto needs multiple life sentences. And they can just give Ichigo the chair, the most boring of almost shonen protagonist.

In many games I play where there are a whole lot of different magic spells to choose from, I often resort to the simple ones like "ice spike", since they are simple and get the job done nicely without needing setup

Gokus is actaully on the more cpmplex side of powers in his univerese. can read minds, see while blind, can teleport and suprise faster eneimes, can absorb genki, can hurt hims self for extra power, can fusion dance, can heal in super. and he seems to know all his friends moves too. Naruto's shadow clonses are underated in how interesting they are, sauske only wins in complexity because of sharinggan, Naruto can summons toads and his whirlball isnt consisitent in what it seems to do so youre never sure what state the enemy will be in when he hits them with it.
