This documentary film confronts death head on. "DYING" is a personal, profound and poignant memoir of three people and how they faced their deaths from cancer.
Sally, 46, bonds with her elderly mother as they take things day to day; Bill, in his early 30s, stoically goes on while his wife loses herself in rage; grandfatherly Reverend Bryant preaches a final sermon, then goes back South one last time.
"DYING" shows the anguish of living, the desire to laugh even when it's all but impossible, the bare joy of living, joy without laughter. Direct close-ups of faces, like those of the unforgettable grandson of Reverend Bryant, designed to pull you into wholehearted quotidian terror. Three different takes on death: you can embrace the nothing (Sally the red-headed mountaineer), you can rage and curse and wish death was already here, even if it sounds monstrous (Harriet and Bill), or you can laugh and grin and make merry along the way to oblivion (Reverent Bryant-which is one of the most purely devastating segments known to U.S. documentary).
This is obviously a ridiculously strong documentary film that you must see and share.

I can’t believe she is wanting to remarry again I mean dang lady your husband isn’t dead yet!! Then saying she just wished he would go now . If he has to go why not make it quick and over with. Omg she is absolutely horrible! I feel so sorry for her husband. Being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer literally dying needing his wife now more than ever and this is what he gets? A wife that just wants to have a new husband and for him to just hurry up and die😮.. telling the doctor she prayed his chemo didn’t work!! That doctor owed it to him to let him know how she was feeling about him. I’d divorce her ass and be like go get you another sucker hope he doesn’t get sick you be wanting him to die next! The wife of that dying young man was so horrible; just wanting him to hurry up and die. She could have given her boys so much by making beautiful memories with their father, giving them an example of love and selflessness instead of selfishness and narcissism. What a sad and lonely way he had to leave this earth, knowing that his wife was so eager for him to die and do it quickly. She made me truly sick. If she’s still alive (and she could be an old lady now) she would be deserving of a lonely regretful old age.

@matthewthomasjames

@@emepleez obviously she was scared of being alone, but her attitude was still horrendous and only could cause harm. My mom was a single mother in the seventies and thank God, she didn’t have the attitude that she just had to hurry up and get hooked up with some guy (any guy) so she wouldn’t have to raise us alone. She did in fact raise us on her own and it was, no doubt, a struggle.

I am lost for words at the behaviour of the second woman. Self centered, selfishness and narcissistic doesnt come close to describing what I feel about her. Her husband is dying and all she can do is think about herself and how she is struggling with having 2 kids after he has gone. Speaking about meeting another man and remarrying when her husband is in the other room dying. She needs to be there for her husband show him care, love and support.

I watch many of your uploads , but this one hits hard. I lost my 15 year old son 5 months ago, he fought a short but brutal battle with colorectal cancer. Gone much too soon. I sort of resent the comments judging the wife in the 2nd story. What many of you all dont understand, i pray you never do, is how HARD it is to watch someone you love actively dying. What may have come across as crass, uncaring, resentful is really a demonstration of her absolute fear. This was a different time , where women grew up, married, and had children. She couldnt accept the uncertainty of the illness or a future without the stability of a husband. I think we all at times are afraid of an uncertain future. The reverend in 3rd story is so similar to my son...They told him cancer was in liver.... and at least those docs were honest with Rev. Bryant and told him directly that there is no treatment available once it gets there... no one told me as directly as this. Im not sure it wouldve helped knowing, perhaps my child's doctors were just trying to give me something to hold onto...hope?...Hard to believe this is almost 50 years old documentary, and what a shame in that time , there havent been advancements made to help treat when its that far gone. Rest in Peace to all who have gone much too soon. Rest in Peace my sweet Cameren. Mom loves you foREVer

I think you’re wrong. Most folks want their love ones to be with them as long as possible. l know what it’s like to lose someone very dear to me. And true when the person becomes unconscious or goes into coma then maybe you hope for them to go quick. But that ladies spouse was still able to enjoy life and his children and she was pure poison, zero sense of humanity in her. She only wanted him to go quick so she could on with her life. She made her ill husband’s life horrible.

None of you have heard of the spouse becoming angry and their emotions and behavior changes when the sick spouse has only so long to live 🤔 it happens everyday across the world especially with cancer patients and dementia and other diseases who don't have long to live. I'm surprised at some of you especially the real adults

Wow, the second story, that wife thinks this is all about her and how his cancer is affecting her. She should be concerned about her husband, as he is the one with cancer. She should be cherishing every moment she has with him. So terrible this man had to pass away unloved by his wife. ❤ RIP. Wish you could have had a loving wife by your side.

The first segment was so nostalgic for me. I was a nurse back in the days of caps and white dresses. Ambulances were not much more than glorified station wagons. The human touch seemed more noticeable then. I’m not saying technology is bad; we can save lives now that just 20 years ago had no hope. Were I to teach student nurses again I would emphasize that touch is so very important. Thank you for sharing this video.

You are absolutely right when you say that touch is so very important. I work in healthcare and can't begin to tell you, how much touch means to someone who is dying. So many people, especially the elderly aren't touched at all and once they feel your hand in theirs, they grip you like a vice, sometimes kiss your hand or bring it to their cheek - I can honestly say, that never fails to make me weep because touch is so fundamental to being human❤

Yes, she had a wonderful inner light that shone brightly. I also felt the same from her mother, the gentleness and beautiful love between them was truly special. The woman in story #@ has said some horrible things! However, I am somewhat on the fence as to wheather or not she is just plain evil or stressed to the max. Her sons are angry, she is angrey, the husband is just sad. I feel like the angre is more fear then than anything. She is afraid of raising two boys alone and with them acting out what will happen? I would be terrified about raising my son alone and watching my husband die. I would not think and wish her husband dead ASAP like her, but I kinda get where she is coming from. I wonder if she ever remarried.

I remember watching this in my psych 101 class almost 35 years ago in college. I remember feeling horrified watching the wife be so cruel and mean to her husband. As I began watching it again i thought, “I’m in such a different place now in my life. Maybe it will make more sense to me now.” Nope. In fact, I feel even more contempt for her. She had a good life. He provided well for her. He was the one suffering with cancer. Yet, she made it all about her. I would have loved to have seen a follow up with her. I hope those 2 sweet boys didn’t have to suffer living with her. She needed to be seen by a psychiatrist. It’s all about her when he is the one who is dying. Terrible woman!

Rev bryants family was mirror image of us 7 kids losing our daddy to cancer 14 years ago, we all stayed by his bedside at home and comforted mom before and after..it was so hard losing the patriot of our family, life was never the same. Just lost mom 4 years ago and the family split up! Im wondering if these familys got closer or just couldnt deal with the loss, like my own family. If i could do it over and over Id ask god for the same parents. I miss them both. Its been hard.

I got all kinda weird vibes with the second family in this film..i feel their family unit is disfunctional anyway,unruly ,disrespectful kids,a wife who clearly wears the trousers in the relationship,with the cancer diagnosis shes lost an element of control over things..The cancer diagnosis has just heightened all the underlying issues that were there already.Fear can make you react in a way others may deem cold and inappropriate but this woman clearly doesn't give a rats backside about her husband. The battle and sadness he was going through is so palpable,he must've been made to feel so guilty for getting cancer not receiving the love and support he so desperately needed but i feel his passing will have given him release from not just the cancer but his awful home life.Poor man i hope hes at peace.
