You've never seen Frank that moved in his life. He was dumbfounded and awestruck at Bob's song. His jaw actually dropped. It is Bob's version of "I Did It My Way."

There was a performance by Harry Connick Jr singing to and for Frank. I saw in on TV when it aired. And they showed Frank at a table (maybe at Las Vegas) so visibly moved. Haven;t tracked it down on youtube yet. Frank also spoke with awe about the effect on him of listening to Jo Stafford who would go on before him when they were both in Dorsey's band.

I believe there is an intersection of Bob Dylan and Frank Sinatra - in music and in New York City - that made them quite familiar with each other. I'm reading that Frank requested this song. That's so Frank. This song is so Frank. He always portrayed himself as the lone figure at the end of the bar at the end of the night. "...remain as I am And bid farewell and not give a damn." "Happy Birthday, Mr. Frank," indeed.

This is wonderful and the first time I saw it-thanks for sharing! I love the way Bob Dylan sings this song-a really good song too! Bob is such an awesome singer/writer, and I have lots of favorites of his, but this is in the top 10 for sure. I am so glad that Mr. Sinatra asked him to sing this instead of one of his songs. What a tribute to Mr. Sinatra and as Mr. Sinatra was always into the lyrics of a song, I am sure he really enjoyed this. Both men stand out, that is for sure!!! I love Mr. Sinatra's music as well as I like Bob Dylan's.

He wasnt dumbfounded; he asked Bob to do the song and he knew his music. Dylan is one of the greatest singers ever, and his phrasing is nearly as brilliant as Sinatra's. This is an incredible performance.

right Jason. this is Sinatra's favorite Dylan son. Dylan is a genius. I have seen him 35 times starting on November 12, 1965 in Cleveland, ohio. met him in Cleveland on july 17, 1991. he was very quiet and nice to me. walked with him to his bus. not a word out of him but I was drunk for 3 days after that.

Sinatra and Dylan have a lot in common if you've read the best books about them. Both were in search of magic music. Sinatra's 50s albums are haunting, glorious works. Dylan sought similar feelings in his albums. Both could hold an audience. Rock on, Bob, it's not dark yet...

I seem to recall that Bob played this song at Frank's own request after planning on doing something else. He hadn't played it 30+ years, and I think he only played it once more after, at one of his own concerts when Sinatra died.

One of my favorite Dylan performances ever. He was originally scheduled to play "That's Life" (which, incidentally, bears a melodic resemblance to Dylan's own "Hazel") before, the story goes, Frank requested "Restless Farewell." It was the only non-Frank song of the entire program, which leads one to believe that Frank himself must have profoundly identified with it. The lyrical sentiment is kind of "My Way"-ish.

Frank was always very generous in his appreciation of and lavish in his praise ofother artists - such as Jo Stafford, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, etc. I have been trying to find something I saw on TV years ago. Dumbfounded? You might want to do your research. Everyone else did a Sinatra song. Dylan did this song which he hadnt performed in over three decades and which he wrote when he was 22. It was at Frank's request. Listen to the lyrics - especially the last verse - and its pretty evident that Ol' Blue Eyes was, if anything, in pretty good control of his faculties when he picked this one.

Proabably. The whole package was the attraction. Still, he was a very fastidious dresser - except for his baseball cap phase - and was pretty vocal about how "kids" dress habits had changed. I'm a fan of both these guys I (if you care about music, you have to deal with them. sooner or later). But, I gotta tell ya, that suit of Dylan's is a SERIOUS fashion statement - it's vintage Dylan. It's just tough to have the greatest song writer doing albums of cover songs. Its what he has earned and he is entitled to do it. I've never seen this before and a very strange and uneasy performance this is. I had heard that Dylan, Sinatra, and Springsteen at some time had visited together. All master stylists. Interesting that Dylan is singing in one of his least enjoyable voices. He has several modes of singing. His latest record which is a tribute to Sinatra, has a more mellow sound. Great song, though. One of my favorites and one of his most truthful lyrics. It's uneasy to me because of the audience he is singing to, not the most appreciative bunch of people.
