I have always been a heavy metal guy, but by accident, after watching a Guthrie Govan video where he played with a slide, I became very interested in its sound. So, I quickly searched and discovered the song ‘Midnight in Harlem.’ After that, I completely fell in love with TTB. While searching for more slide influences, I found your video ‘Slide Guitar 101...’ Ever since I never miss any of your videos, and my slide playing has become completely influenced by you. I can’t use the slide on my ring finger anymore and only play it in standard tuning, there’s even a lick that I stole from your cover of ‘The Great Gig in the Sky' lmao. So yeah, I believe you have already established your guitar identity, and I hope you can be the future of this style.

Awesome, thoughtful video Dylan! I saw a video recently of Nate Smith (one of the best drummers in the whole world!) recently saying “everything good about my playing I stole from somebody” then demonstrates a rock feel, swing, funk etc with a specific person who influenced him to play THAT feel. Caring a ton to have your own voice is definitely awesome but at the end of the day playing with your heart and soul is most important and that’s really what this video showed me… you’re a legend with your own sound, keep soaring man! ❤️

I very much relate to what you say here. My biggest influence when I was young was Clapton. I have been told I sound like him in the past. I’ve always listened to slide players - Joe Walsh, Muddy Waters, and Duane early on. Later I discovered Sonny and Joey Landreth, Ry Cooder, David Lindley and the Skynyrd band. Bonnie Raitt and the two Georges - Lowell and Harrison are also on my faves list. My all time favorite guitarist is Rory Gallagher - he was a great slide player as well. My most recent favorite is Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe - I know she plays a lap steel (like Lindley), but love sweet slide, no matter how it’s produced. I also love the acoustic side of slide - Jerry Douglas, Tut Taylor, Mike Aldridge, and anyone who plays a Weissenborn. Great stuff, Dylan. Keep it coming.

I remember reading one of the rollingstone best guitarist lists and Derek Trucks was 11th or 16th or something. So I looked him up on youtube and the first hit was a live rendition of Sahib Teri Bandi. I was totally blown away. I think I played it 10 times in a row. To me it's still one of the best guitar songs ever.

I bought your course. I saw Derek Trucks at the Windjammer on the Isle of Palms in Charleston, SC when he was 13. He came out in a braves cap and blew the roof off the place. I hadn't heard Sonny Landreth yet at the time, so up to that point he was the best slide player I had ever heard. to be honest, I had heard Sonny but didn't know it was him. He played slide on John Hiatt's Slow Turnin' record. Sonny and Derek are my favorites. (and of course you).

I think Derek is a phenomenal player but I actually liked him better when he was younger. It seems the older he gets the harsher he plays and I don't really care for that as much, it's almost like he's too good, like a machine. Duane played so beautiful and powerful and imperfect he could knock me back in my seat and make me cry like a baby like no one else could, he was something very very special. I still get goosebumps and tears listening to things I've heard hundreds probably thousands of times over the past 50+ years. You are in a very difficult position I know but my guess is being influenced style wise it's not as important as the creation of original unique music. I'm listen to tons of great players on KZbin cover other people's music maybe even better than the original sometimes but if they don't have their own music or much of it they seem kind of limited to me. Don't get me wrong I'm not talking about you I just think that creativity and originality is far more important than skill technique style that kind of thing.

Every guy who ever picked up a guitar did it because they heard someone else. George Harrison fell in love with Elmore. Same for Clapton. Hi Dylan, Ive been playing in open E songs like Just Got Paid...When I try to switch to standard tuning I get stuck with the lack of adjacent strings ringing and it just doesn't good. I want to use standard only as I don't want to go down the rabbit hole learning more chords and riffs in open E and then switching back to standard for the next tune. Also I hate bringing extra guitars to gigs and switching guitars between songs. Planning on buying your course but any insights on getting my standard mojo on would help greatly. Some other tunes giving me grief, Stay with Me, Rocky Mountain Way...how would i get either tune to kick butt in standard? Thanks for all the vids I wish great success to you.
@dylanadamsguitar
@dylanadamsguitar 10 күн бұрын
Hey! When it comes to adapting stuff that was originally played in open tunings, there will usually be small compromises you have to make, and one of those is the being a little more limited with letting adjacent strings ring out like you’ve found. The course does cover that exact topic, but in general I’ll say fingerpicking/muting unwanted strings with your picking hand is very important, and utilizing the major triad on the DGB strings in order to get a little of that open-style flavor in there. Check out some videos of Warren Haynes talking about standard tuning slide, he gives some good examples of what I’m talking about!

OK, I have to admit it always bothered me that you left Derek Trucks out of most of your talks/vidoes. Thank you for explaining. My opinion of you just went up and it was already pretty high. I also went to a very exclusive private music school and had a similar experience where suddenly I felt embarrassed about some of my music heroes and I know it takes a while to overcome that nonsense. That along with your playing makes you a damn good role model too.

Dylan, You have got to get ahold of Victory Amps. You need to play their amps. You're not a pedal guy and their amps can give you everything you could possibly need. See if they'll put you on their team! Oh, btw, dude, start writing your own material, or at least recording it. There's no better way to get your own voice than to just write what comes. Go back at a later date and expand, flesh it out as it were. Next thing you know, you have a compilation worth listening to. The world will find you.
@leftwrite
@leftwrite 11 күн бұрын
At the end of the day your influence is really just a small part of you. It ultimately comes down to your choices as you play. You will never make the exact same choices as Derek - how could you (unless you are purposely copying him). What will separate you really are the tunes you write/arrange/play. Those songs shape the direction your playing goes. To me Derek sounds different from his Allman Brothers stuff, compared to his solo work, and now compared to 12+ years of the Tedeschi-Trucks stuff. Those songs, how they are constructed, how he fits into the mix with the other 11 musicians ultimately shape his playing. Robin Trower was originally compared to Hendrix, but they are totally different. Same thing with SRV and John Mayer. Bonamassa and Eric Johnson, etc. It really doesn't matter. I would suggest not overthinking this and end up making choices that might be negative. I come here to listen to you - enjoying what you have to offer on guitar. I put on TTB when I want to hear Derek. Two entirely different things to me. You do you - close your eyes and let it rip. To me, that's pretty cool.

Think about it this way: The course is over 6 hours of meticulously planned/filmed/edited video material plus downloadable backing tracks and 40+ pages of PDFs/tabs. You’d be hard pressed to find good quality private lessons in a topic as specific as standard tuning slide guitar for under $75/hr, but let’s say you did find some for say $50/hr. Six 1-hour lessons at $50 each is $300, double what I’m charging (and that’s when my course is full price, which it frequently goes on sale), and unless your teacher lets you record, you don’t have access to those lessons forever. Sure, there is value in 1 on 1 realtime lessons vs prerecorded content, but the information in my course is detailed/high quality, and tons of people have reached out to me saying they’re seeing more progress with their slide playing than they ever did before doing my course. Plus, aside from the tabs I did 100% of the work to make my course, which took several months to do, plus 19 years of experience mostly teaching myself/playing the guitar to even get to the point where I could make such a course. Regarding my sig slide, that’s just what The Rock Slide charges for all of their artist sig slides, not a price that I suggested/demanded. They’re on the expensive side for slides, but they’re just about the best designed/best quality slides you’ll find anywhere. If the course or slide aren’t worth it to you then that’s fine, but the prices are justified and a lot of people seem to be happy with their purchases of both products.

Stop me if I've already told you this one -- I had taken my mother-in-law to the hospital (Baptist South) and ran to get some lunch for my wife and I at Sushi House on Old St. Augustine. I walked in to pick up my order and there was a big table with eight to ten folks having a late lunch. "Are you from Boston?" a young lady at the table asked. I guessed she asked because I was wearing a Red Sox cap. "No, but I love the Red Sox" "Me too and I'm from there." she replied. I noticed a bass case leaning against the wall and asked what was in it. "A 1959 Fender P bass" one of the guys answered. "Are you guys in a band?" I asked. "Yes, we're the Susan Tedeschi Band" "You must be Susan" I asked the young lady who asked about Boston. "Yes, that's me and this is my band" she replied. "Oh, I love your album Can't Burn This!" "You mean Just Won't Burn?" She corrected. Strike one. "Wow, I'm a big fan. And I think your husband is the greatest guitar play in the world!" Susan sighed and said "yep, I get that a lot." I still bad about my blunders with Susan. And, Susan, if you're reading this, I think you are the greatest singer in the world and a pretty darn good guitar player. And tell Derek "Go Noles!" for me. I may have sold him a Duo Sonic when he was a kid.
