Awesome, Thanks. so glad I found your channel. After 50 odd years of trying cop Duane's and Dickey's tones and licks, I'll need another fifty years ha. Can't wait to dig into your stuff.

I love the idea that a specific scale pattern enables you to start to sound like Duane . I wonder if other artists have their scale patterns too? George Harrison maybe? Great vid, thanks Dylan. There's very little standard tuning slide tutorials about so well done!

@CorbCorbin8 ай бұрын
Why? It shouldn’t take more than half a minute to tune. There are so many tuners that can do whatever key you want. You don’t even have to spend much.
@fr3ak1shh7 ай бұрын
@@CorbCorbin If you change to alternate tunings, you should also ideally adjust your truss rod. And if you play a guitar with a floating trem, you may also have to adjust the bridge springs, or your bridge isn't gonna be level (which could also lower or raise your action). Definitely helps to have a hardtail, but I still prefer not switching tunings.

I'm happy that somehow I figured out some of those licks by myself even never hearing Duane Allman before. Those patterns are the soul of the slide guitar. Probably I was inspired by Dylan's improvisations, so those sounds stuck in my mind.

Great vid and lesson, thank you! I love these 1/4 note bend/curls but played with slide. I always tried to be spot-on to avoid strangled cat effect and that sometimes makes me sound almost as if I didn't play with slide at all ;-) these curls expanded my vocabluary. Thank you!

The "blue note" is in between a major and minor 3rd. Old knowledge. There's another between a 5 and flat five. Good video, good playing, good tone.
@Lilphesh5 ай бұрын
You mean between the 2nd and 3rd+4th and 5th degrees of the scale? A major and minor 3rd are only a semitone apart, there’s no note between them, same with 5 and flat 5, the flat 5 itself is the blue note
@AdanLucassАй бұрын
@@Lilpheshwhen you play the guitar, bending (or in this case sliding) can give you infinite notes inside a semitone, this kind of out of tune sound adds so much to someones playing when it comes to the blues
@aaronlarsen74478 ай бұрын
Once you learn open tuning in major or minor, you don't memorize the note names, but the intervals. It's like a major scale is the same intervals for every key. You can start with any note and tune your guitar as a chord.

As a teacher myself, it might be easier for people who don't know theory to avoid terms like 4th and 5th. Maybe say '5th of the scale' for clarity. Love your lessons and playing though! This is good stuff!

How about to set your guitar up for slide like Duane Allman.
@dobrostarr37597 ай бұрын
I play dobro. I would think slide would be an easy transition but I struggle. I have short fingers so my slide hangs way over when I try to stop before my knuckle like you recommend. I also can’t find the tone…I’m either overly distorted or it’s too clean. Just can’t dial that quack like you get.

Get a lap steel openng dobro g tuning is beaut on electric lap, a $45 bad monkey pedal into a clean amp setting is an easy tubey tone..😊

What made you commit to standard vs. open tuning? I’ve heard you mention it briefly in older videos but is it simply a matter of flexibility, comfort, or something else?
@dylanadamsguitar8 ай бұрын
It was mainly that I was starting to feel limited by Open E and unable to break out of sounding like a Duane/Derek clone. Standard felt like uncharted territory and the best place to try to find my own voice, plus I liked the idea of not having to switch guitars to play slide. That said, I still wanted to be able to play that Duane/Derek style stuff in standard if I so desired (they’re still my biggest influences after all), hence relearning it all in standard like I demonstrate in this video!
@Shaddy898 ай бұрын
@@dylanadamsguitar it’s a killer video man I appreciate you making it! I’m having the opposite problem, I feel like I’m going back to old habits and licks when I’m in standard but open D seems to be giving me some fresh ideas. We will see what wins out ultimately!
