OK Dylan, I'm going to put my two cents worth in here. The "sludge" you were seeing in the valve cover and on the rocker arms was generally caused by Motor oil with a graphite base. So yes, they did change the oil just like they were supposed to. (Your records in the book proved that.) But that old motor oil with the graphite caused all of that. It probably caused oiling problems in the bottom end, hence the locked up motor. But a 65 era 383 is definitely worth the trouble of saving.

I grew up riding around in the rumble seat of a ‘65 Dodge Monaco wagon, so this project is one I’d like to see come to a happier and driving state of existence. Content I’d like to see you do would be carefully disassemble the interior and restore the inside with some covert modern touches. Pull the motor trans and suspension, repair any structural stuff, and modernize the running gear, leaving that patina mostly untouched, but protected. Like a Jonathan Ward “Icon derelict” type build. Ok, too expensive pipe dream, but that’d be super cool.

Great ride and well optioned. Looking forward to more updates. Take care. PS; Your very fortunate it didn't have a vinyl top all those years.
