I vote to keep it numbers matching and pull that motor apart. That is a rare and unique vehicle, even if you don't do a complete restoration it could be a valuable multi video for bringing it back to life. We have seen several 440 and have 460 builds, how about building us a 383. I helped a friend bring back a 65 Fury with a 426 cross-ram wedge. Talk about rare.

I'm on board with the rebuild. Nice to keep this one original. 1965 was such a great year for car design in general, most manufacturers retooled and offered new drive trains, bodies became more squared off. Always liked the roofline on the '65 mopars

When that valve cover was removed at 27:26 I said, "Oh no." To me it looked like someone (young kid probably) had run the car for years without changing the oil or even topping it off. I'd really like to see an engine rebuild or at least a forensic failure investigation as I'm also a big fan of 1965 Chrysler/Dodge models.

And if it turns out that it can't be rebuilt, I have a complete HP-383 sitting on a stand in my garage that I will donate to the cause. It needs a carb, alternator and fan belts. I used to build and race these era mopars, they are worth the effort. I still own a 66 Coronet 500 2 dr. h.t., factory 383 4bbl 4 speed. Have owned it since 1968. It's all factory driveline but for the diff. I traded the original 3:23 posi with my buddy's new 68 Super Bee 4spd rear diff, it was the Dana 60 with deeper gears. He wanted MPG, I wanted ET's, lol. I lost contact with him after he moved out west. Cheers.. you have a lot of eyes on your Monaco 👍😎😄

OK Dylan, I'm going to put my two cents worth in here. The "sludge" you were seeing in the valve cover and on the rocker arms was generally caused by Motor oil with a graphite base. So yes, they did change the oil just like they were supposed to. (Your records in the book proved that.) But that old motor oil with the graphite caused all of that. It probably caused oiling problems in the bottom end, hence the locked up motor. But a 65 era 383 is definitely worth the trouble of saving.

I grew up riding around in the rumble seat of a ‘65 Dodge Monaco wagon, so this project is one I’d like to see come to a happier and driving state of existence. Content I’d like to see you do would be carefully disassemble the interior and restore the inside with some covert modern touches. Pull the motor trans and suspension, repair any structural stuff, and modernize the running gear, leaving that patina mostly untouched, but protected. Like a Jonathan Ward “Icon derelict” type build. Ok, too expensive pipe dream, but that’d be super cool.

Very nice ride. Glad to see it's getting another lease on life. I would bet my last donut that the odometer has gone around at least once (putting it at 147,000). The service records appear to have ended when the car changes owners. Many old 5 digit odometer cars never made it past 100,000 when it came time to sell 😉 But, you never know. Great ride and well optioned. Looking forward to more updates. Take care. PS; Your very fortunate it didn't have a vinyl top all those years. The rust, especially on the rear pillars would have been MUCH worse. Nice patina actually. 👍

Cool car, definitely worth more attention. It would be interesting to tear down the engine to see what happened.

Yeah, I certainly would watch an engine rebuild series. It's interesting stuff.

1965 was one of my favorite years as I began my teaching career. I am a fan of any upscale sports coupe. I have a 1964 Impala SS and it has all the amenities that the Monaco has including factory air. Please bring this fabulous relic of a bygone era back to life!

It's like JYD says, provided there's no internal damage, he can get it running. You just happened to find one that fits that bill. Good luck, love to see what you do with it.

Hey Dylan I definitely think that cars worth restoring I would rebuild the engine not soup it up just rebuild its stock. where it's not going to cost a lot of money and just fix the car up stock and driving around or sell it it's going to be worth some big money? it has Factory air and power steering and power brakes it's a very desirable model with the bucket seat definitely worth fixing up.

I had one of these back in the day. It was one of the best riding cars I ever owned. Rebuilt the engine, you will not be disappointed.

A series on this beauty is in order. You've done much more with a lot less! Might just be the perfect project for the new shop!

I agree with most people on here take that motor out and rebuild it! I’d hate to see a different motor in that car put it back the way it should be and take it on the power tour!

Wow, I had a 1966 Monaco 500 with a 383, same color. Was waiting to see the same crinkled bad lead repair on the driver-side C-pillar. When i got the quote to re-do the car i elected to buy $300 VW beetles and Karman Ghias, to rebuild and pay tuition. I sold so many of those for $1300. 1 per semester for 4 years.
