TheCraig909 purchased this barge of a truck just a few short months ago and stored it at my place. In this video we're trying to thrash a truck together to make it to Holley Ford Fest! Only problem is this truck has been sitting for 21 years, and man does it show it. Think we can make it on time? Stick around to find out.

I guess I'm officially old. When he said that it had been sitting for 21 years, I was thinking that I didn't know they had window tint like that back then...you know, with 21 years ago being some time in the mid 1970s. Nope. 21 years ago is 2001. Where'd the time go?

Back when crew cabs were for crews and not groceries! Interesting enough, the SuperCab option seemed to be targeted more for the family user rather than the crew version! I guess children didn't need legroom in the 70's! 🤣

@@spaceflight1019 didn’t know that but you could order pretty much anything back then. I’m sure it was closer to 450ish since the later 426 hemisphere were over 500
@MaxGiganteum
@MaxGiganteum Жыл бұрын
There is some irony in your statement that 360s would magically turn into 390s when a truck was up for sale. Sometimes, it wasn't magic at all. Back in the late '60s and early '70s, it was common for Ford to experience union strikes at the various odd assembly plants. In order to keep production going, it was not uncommon to find that Ford installed a 390 in place of a 360. In the past, people have also found that their FE engine was actually a 410 and not a 390 or a 360. How did that work? The crank from a 428 would be installed in place of one for a 390 thus creating a 410. It was all about keeping vehicles moving down the line so that there was something sitting on the dealer lots for people to buy. While the odds are very low that you'll find an engine installed from the factory that is not what was supposed to be there, it isn't that uncommon either. What I would do is check the VIN and decode it. The matching VIN from the door plate should be stamped on a pad at the back of the engine on top of the block. The engine code should be the 4th from the left in the form of a letter and for 1969 the codes are: 240 I-6 A 300 I-6 B 302 V-8 G 390 V-8 H 360 V-8 Y Obviously, Ford didn't advertise a factory 428 in a 1969 model year truck but they certainly did the 360 and the 390. So how can you tell for sure what you have without disassembling the engine? You use the "dowel test". What's that? You install a very narrow dowel or a stiff wire such as that of a coat hanger into one of the cylinders through the spark plug hole to measure the stroke in order to determine what you've got in displacement. You have to be fairly accurate but the test works. Peace & good vibes! ✌🏻📏🇺🇸 - Max Giganteum
@spaceflight1019
@spaceflight1019 Жыл бұрын
@@MaxGiganteum I read about this, I think it was on Barn Finds. The stampings on the block will tell you the as-built displacement, IIRC.
@MaxGiganteum
@MaxGiganteum Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily... what is stamped still may not match up with what the engine really has for displacement. The only for sure thing you can do to find out is to measure and do a little math. Best wishes! 👍🏻🧮👨🏻‍🏫 - Max Giganteum

well I have a 1989 Ford XLT Lariat and I am the third owner and this truck has never died on me once and it can haul a ton not just a half ton and I have done it over and over. The 5.0 Liter V8 has 160,000 miles on it and the engine has never been worked on. My truck has been the most reliable vehicle I have owned. So never look down your nose at a Ford truck because some one left it to rot in a field for 21 years. Those of us who take care of our trucks never have a problem its only when they are neglected do you have problems.

My friends dad had an early 80s ford that we all called the cowboy caddy... it was not only a a 4 door but it was a 3rd party conversion company built truck so it had what I'd call an extended cab 4 door kinda like a dodge mega cab but a bit bigger where it had an extra 3rd row seat in it and the 2nd seat could fold down where it touched the back seat for a spot to sleep... I assume it was purpose built for rodeo life but the man was supposed to go buy a family vehicle for all 8 or 9 of his kids and instead of getting a van like his wife wanted he came home with the truck... 4x4 short bed with the custom cab and a turbo diesel engine flat bed and it was still in really nice shape last I saw it... of course the old man unfortunately passed away in the last year but I'm sure one of the kids still has the old truck... definitely be worth some money to the right person but the centimental value is priceless even to me with the few memories I have of the truck myself...

This video was awesome. I used to have a 1975 F250 Ranger in the same 4 door, long bed, 2wd configuration back in 2007. Mine had a C6 and a 460 with 91k original miles. Only 2 pinhole rust spots on the tailgate, but none anywhere else. I found it sitting in a field with a bed full of trash and paid $1,600 for it on the spot. It must have died on me 30 times in the 50 miles home. Some new brakes, a new fuel system from tanks to carb and it ran a whole lot better. Unfortunately, gas hit $4.50 a gallon, and that thing averaged 6mpg so it had to go. I regret it to this day. Closing the doors on it sounded solid and tight, just like a new car door. Such a solid truck. This video brought back some good memories. Thanks for the great content!

Except Dylan didn't buy it... Craig did. Obviously, he plans on driving it across America back to California. I just hope the lunatics there don't sacrifice it on the altar of the climate change alarmists someday... just because it uses an ICE. I fear that we may be facing Cash for Clunkers Part II in the near future - who knows what the nut jobs will do. Best wishes! 🤔🤦🏻‍♂️🇺🇸 - Max Giganteum
