Using the year of plenty for wood to get the wheat port at 13:36 was definitely the right move, as it's a really strong port for a high wheat board and you wouldn't want to lose the race to Hawkeye. 4:31 Personally I would rather have the 5 9 10 with wood and ore since it gets you good production of wood with a close 3:1 port along with a pairing for a longest road game if grey doesn't cut you off. I am influenced though since my 2 most recent games were longest road wins. 13:37 I would try to trade for either woods or wheat and try to get both the settlement on the wheat port and the city 19:30 I would wait longer on the monopoly until there were more wheats on the board or there were enough ores to have two cities/multiple dev cards, so I'd probably play the knight instead

Pause... I think on the massive 15 card turn with a Year of Plenty, I'd use the Year of Plenty for 2 wood to cut Hawkeye off to the wheat port... Wood is the only thing you don't produce, and Hawkeye is your only real threat for largest army, and really only if he gets on the wheat port since his sheep production and overall production is so much lower than your own... Groundhog doesn't produce enough ore to compete with you for army, and will probably go for longest road based on his setup... Ian doesn't produce any sheep and the port he's heading towards is a sheep port, so it's unlikely he'll be able to compete with you for army either... So just cutting off Hawkeye and eliminating him from the army race seems like the best play... It makes you a big threat but honestly with 15 (17) cards no matter what you do you're going to be a big threat so you might as well eliminate the the biggest competitor to your easiest win condition... It also could possibly force Hawkeye and Ian to race for the 3-1 port at the bottom right of the island, since they both could really use it, and forcing races is generally a good thing (although they'll both probably be stealing from you anyways with your position)... Still, it ensures only 1 of them will get a useful port for the game, and the one who doesn't is going to have more difficulty buying dev cards... Then with 6 ore, 3 sheep, 1 wheat, and 1 brick left I'd probably buy a dev card since you're clearly in the lead, see what it is, then maybe convert 4-1 ore to wheat to buy another based on what that dev card is... It's wasteful since you produce way more wheat than ore, but if you don't you'll be passing with 8 cards, so even if it is a little wasteful with your ore, you should be able to make it up with your massive production and wheat port, and it's probably better than passing with 8 cards and taking a 50/50 chance you lose half your hand... All of this is assuming no one will trade you with 15 cards to start your turn, and I'm pretty sure no one will... Ok unpause, let's see how close I get...

Great video as always. Generally speaking using mono when it greatly improves your hand is correct, but you also have to consider you are stripping your opponents of those cards as well. Clearly using mono to prevent your opponent from winning on their turn or next couple turns is a correct play, but I am wondering if there are other circumstances where using it to hinder your opponents is correct (maybe to solidify a winning position?).
@DyLightedCatan3 жыл бұрын
I responded to another comment above with a very similar question. There’s still a bunch more on the monopoly but I didn’t have time to cover it in this video. Basically you can monopoly a specific person if they are VERY far ahead or about to win. You can use monopoly both offensively and defensively. In this video I was focusing on how to maximize value for yourself instead of hurting opponents. However, there are situations where you want to be playing it to simply slow an opponent down.

Although I normally like to have sufficient wood and brick for roads, I think the black set up is better. The 2:1 wheat is just too tempting and the blue player won't be in a position to get a free road, so taking 5-9-10 second means the race is on. Then 9-2 and 6-3 should be the next goals, in parallel with city-ing up. On average, in such 'side-doughnut' configurations it pays to settle near the hole as it gives you more room for expansion. Buy two wood, get the 2:1 port and 2 dev cards. It is the safest bet long term. Wouldn't play dev card just yet. I'd be buying roads to get to 4-11 and then 6-3.

Pause #2... I don't think there's enough ore out there to use the monopoly on ore, and that"s the resource you could really use on this turn... There is more wheat than ore out there, and you do have a wheat port, but I think I would personally just play the knight this turn since it's on your hex... Even if it is just your 5-sheep hex with a settlement on it, you'll probably be buying a dev card this turn and have no sheep left in your hand, so unblocking the sheep is a solid move... Also keeping up in the knight race with Hawkeye could be crucial, and he's already got 1 knight down and 1 dev card unplayed and you don't have any knights down yourself... I'd also probably put it on a spot that blocks Hawkeye, but maybe steal from a leader (like on the 3-ore but steal from Ian since he has 2 powerful cities and also has a dev card face down)... Maybe buy the dev card before playing a knight to see what it is, but I think no matter what it was I'd play the knight over the mono this turn... I know my guy NeoNate would support my choice of patience with the monopoly, but let's see what you do...
@miketsable3 жыл бұрын
19:30 I'd play a knight, not a good enough position for monopoly I think. Need to get those knights on the board as well. Getting a second city would be nice but I'd probably wait to get two cities in one turn.

I always apply real world concepts whenever I play Catan. There is this negotiation principle where you have to leverage the other person into believing they need what you have. This can be seen in sales. This is also achieved by simply asking "Hey, what do you need'? I also apply a lot of economic principles to the game such as Aggregate Supply and Comparative Advantage. These two principles have a little to do with distribution of resources, or at least that's what I use them for in game.
@kozokosa92893 жыл бұрын
i mean, when you mention that they will call your mono out, they should've in this game already, 4 devs and not removing the robber from his own hex? extremely sus, RB would not have been worth it, YoP as well, 4 vp's? no way in hell. so it's a mono.

I'd want the second setup I think. In terms of ports and space I think there is a lot more potential, and you don't have to rely on trades as heavily if you plan to road settle and block other players like blue from a port(Like the wheat port which you should definitely grab if possible in the first setup). It's unlikely to see anyone place their settlements on the right side of the board other than maybe green on the 8-4-sheep port(In my opinion), so this explains my reasoning space wise and port wise as you won't be as challenged. But part of that banks on green not being able to snag the ore port. Plus, this assumes black the fourth player would place their road left leaning rather than right leaning challenging you.

Then I would have more sheep but more importantly wood as then I have access to all resources in the game and a 3.1 port. With the guarantee that blue cant take the wheat port moving forward!

If I were in Position 3's shoes, I'd have probably put my settlements in the 5/9/12 and 6/3/4 or 6/4/11 slots if possible, so as to cover my bases and be able to collect all resources. After all, on this board, brick seems pretty rare as well, having no redtile hexes, whereas all the other ones do. Plus, 5/9/12 is one road away from a 3:1 any port and two away from a 2:1 ore port, which the 5/9/12 produces on fives, meaning you have two backups in case none of the other players want to trade with you.

Could have played the monopoly card for +6 wheat = 11 wheat in hand. Burn 8 to trade for 4 roads and the remaining hand gets you a settlement on the 8/4 sheep port kneecapping grey, putting you in strong position for longest road and getting the sheep port.

Offer trades to try to pick up the two wood. If the trades don't go through for wood, try to get some extra wheats as well (2 weats would be good) using one of your bricks, up to two of your ores, and up to 2 of your sheeps. My main goal in a turn like this is to build a settlement on the wheat port and also to build a city on the 5-9-10. Assuming one of the trades at least goes through, you can easily build a settlement+city, but if you're lucky and you get more than one trade you can probably go for settlement+city+dev card, which would be ideal to protect your ore. Edit: on the turn at 19:30 I think it makes sense to save the mono because there's not a ton of wheat knocking around, and the mono on ore only gets you 3-4 I think. Just two for 1 your wheat to pick up another dev card, or pass the turn.

At 12.00 you would have the option to take two wood with Year of Plenty and block the wheatport for blue with two streets in his direction. Its not the best option, but I think I would go for it. Anyway, great game.

Hi DyLighted! I really love the in depth analysis and explanation of initial placement, it is such a critical factor for the entire remainder of the game. Thought experiment: Lets say 3rd position go for the 5-9-10 as you do. What then happens if 4th position takes the strong wood spot, but also clamps down on the 5-6-11, trusting he will be able to trade his rare wood for brick and sheep? Is this even a valid consideration (he will get 2 cities pretty fast). Which spot would you take in this case, and why? A further thing - in this game, Hawkeye gets a great 1st settlement but a poor 2nd settlement. I feel like going first is incredibly difficult when I play, since it feels like so much is out of your hands; your opponents, in particular number 2 pick, gets to decide which your 2nd settlement will be. You have made a great guide to 3rd position picks - I would love to hear similar thoughts for all positions on the board on many different board textures. Have not watched the video to the end (yet!) - but rooting for you to take down the first-to-three!

Hey Jacob! Thanks for commenting this. I actually thought about your exact thought experiment before and I’m going to be making a shorter Patreon video about it later today. I think doing something like this mitigates a good chunk of variance since you’re inducing people to trade more. I think I would go on the 6-3-4 for the thought experiment you were talking about. On different positions vs different board textures, perhaps one day I’ll make a guide on this. I’m glad you liked my video on 3rd position!

Impressive game, I’ve started to hate taking strong ore spot as first player, I feel like taking strong ore spot unless it’s like 8 5 9 wheat ore, is always a non winning play, just feels like your Locked out on your last placement and always playing from behind
@DyLightedCatan3 жыл бұрын
It definitely depends on the board and who you’re playing with. Sometimes taking the initial ore spot can get you absolutely pounded by the robber since everyone is so afraid of it.

When you were rewinding and deciding whether to use monopoly, I feel like I would have taken the 6 wheat, port trade to build one road and one settlement on the 4-11 (all wheat) to strengthen my port income.

At 13:41, I think I would go for the wheat port. While I do like having one of each of the 5 resources, I would still want to empty my hand here. At the start, I was eyeing the 8-4-10 spot since there are multiple brick ore spots that would still be available. I think I would try to longest road past groundhog for the 6-2 spot to gain access to wood. So year of plenty 2 wood, settlement on the wheat port, and then a development card would be my play I think. I still want a development card in hand to make opponent's debate about robbing from me.
@executiveelf87932 жыл бұрын
At 13:42 my guess is year of plenty for wood and settle on the wheat port
@1sttperson3 жыл бұрын
at 13:41 (assuming no one will trade wood or wheat to you.) : the wheat port is just soooooooo powerful for your game you have to go for it (and get one dev card) even though it unfortunately leaves you with 8 cards you can't do anything with. I can't see a better alternative to get you less cards without basically giving up on going for the wheat port. a city and 1 or 2 dev cards just isn't really worth it imo, you will get targeted and you wouldn't have a port to give you flexibility when you are blocked. (Edit) I would have held at 8 instead of the second dev card. The reasons being: you could discard wood/wheat/brick if you had to, you have a good chance of getting another city next turn, the 5 is a very good robber target for blue and green, 5 might not roll again for a while.
@DyLightedCatan3 жыл бұрын
Yep! You got everything written correctly here! Great job on the quiz!
@ThisTinSoldier2 жыл бұрын
My solution: YoP for 2 wood, trade all stone for wood and 3 sheep for brick, road off blue from the wheat port and grey from the 3/1 port. Perhaps not optimal, but I prefer a denial game, thouugh it may be more effective in a ttabletop game than online.

When you're debating using the monopoly card and you know the other players have 6 wheat, why is it not optimal to play the monopoly card? You would have 6 extra wheat for a total of 11. You can use a total of 8 wheat to get four ore, and are left with 3 wheat, a sheep, a brick and 4 ore, which is enough for a city on the 5-9-10 _and_ a dev card.
@DyLightedCatan3 жыл бұрын
Good question! It’s not that it’s not a good play (it’s good), but rather the monopoly card is so strong that you can get MORE than 6 wheat if you’re patient.
