Hoping you see this and clear something up. Are Max Guard on timer? Or does it slowly reduce, the shield icons, after absorbing damage for you.

Max Guard Absords the move damage ,there is no timer and you can switch Pokemons too ,when you will bring back Pokemon you used Max guard earlier on ,it will still have Shields 🛡️
