Wasn't it the special WDM-2C with a box cab in the front earlier? 14049 it seems so.

Yes, This locomotive had box-cab, nicknamed 'Electricity bill counter'. While out of factory it had conventional baldy shorthood, it had accident near Trichy and the shorthood was converted to box-cab, few years later boxcab replaced with conventional shorthood and EMD style DBR.

Why do we need dynamic braking in diesel Locomotive ?

Dynamic braking is a friction-less braking system. Dynamic braking reduces the stress on using Airbrake operated Brakes fit on the Coaches and wagons therefore increasing the lifetime of brake shoes. When current is supplied to traction motors, armature rotate under the influence of electro-magnetic field and train starts accelerating. The same traction motor is used to slow down train, a static magnetic field is fed on the rotating armature of a locomotive running above 50kmph. Static field influences the armature to reduce rotation and thus train reduces speed.Dynamic braking is ineffective below 30kmph, in such speed AirBrakes are used, air-brakes activates the coach's brakeshoes
