Sorry to keep you waiting! It's got quite the range of mics, so I'm curious to hear what you think. Condenser (and shotgun) comparisons are coming soon too :)

now that I've watched it: 1. you picked a great selection of mics 2. I still like the sound of my q9u (just atrocious handling noise) and 3. holy hell your wife's voice is perfect for audiobooks.

@@woodypaul_ Thanks! And I agree, the Q9U and Q9X are some of the most well rounded, solid sounding mics at their price point. I also agree, she's amazing. I'll let her know her fan base has increased by 1, haha.

would be cool if you tell us next time, how the bass and treble switches on the se dynacaster were, when you recorded it. The sound of the dynacaster changes a lot with its settings.
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 10 ай бұрын
I agree! Unfortunately, there's too different settings and switches across all these mics, it would become too long and confusing in a non-dedicated video. Things like the RODE XDM-100 can sound any way you want really through all the options in Unify, and then really all the mics can sound drastically different with EQ and other processing. So, I tried to pick the most common settings, or the ones that best represent the overall character of each mic.

Hi,For untreated room for narrating horror-thriller stories In USB mode only . I’m considering the AM8, SL40, K688, and TANK3, but I’m a bit confused about which one to prioritize. Could you share your opinion on which of these should be priority choice for this purpose?
@NewLayer
@NewLayer Ай бұрын
For an untreated room, a dynamic mic is definitely going to be the best bet. I don't have experience with any of those, but they are all entry-level mics, so should have similar performance. If the SL40 sounds as good as the SL40X, it will be great, but USB/XLR combo mics usually sound different in XLR mode Vs USB mode because USB mode uses different circuitry. They'll all likely perform similarly, just learn the basics of processing your audio afterwards, and that will be the biggest difference: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3alk5uMZr51esk

I always find these videos so hard to tell the difference between these mics. I am always curious to find out what mic is the easiest in post processing? Also, that is really awesome that your wife is an audio book reader. Would love to know now she got that job?
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 10 ай бұрын
If you're listening on a phone or small computer speakers, it's almost impossible to tell sometimes, haha. You definitely want good headphones or studio monitors to hear it clearly. That also goes to show that if all your audience is going to be listening on phones, maybe you don't need a more expensive mic. As far as post processing goes, I don't think any are easier or harder, because once you create a custom EQ and compression preset for your mic/voice, you can apply it in 1-click no matter what. I will say that the RODE XDM-100 uses Unify, which lets you apply all that stuff live, before ever hitting record, so it saves you the step of having to do ANY post processing, if that is appealing to you. You set up the EQ, noise gate, compression, etc. in Unify, then it's just always there. That works for the RODE XDM-100, XCM-50, NT-USB+, and maybe 1 or 2 of their other USB mics. Hope that helps!

About the audiobook narration, besides having a great reading voice, she just started auditioning at places like ACX. Getting your first job can be tough, but it gets easier as you build a portfolio and connections.

@NewLayer
@NewLayer 10 ай бұрын
You'll want to set an EQ, noise gate, and compressor. This video shows how to do all that, just not inside OBS, but you should be able to figure out that aspect: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3alk5uMZr51esk

It's definitely a nice mic, both in the audio and build quality departments. I also like how the XLR port is on the mount side, so the cable doesn't move when you adjust the mic, and of course all the EQ options.

I'm kinda embarrassed to even say this but my ears preferred the FDUCE in both male and female voices. It makes no sense but it's just what my ears liked. As an owner of an RE20 and RE27 N/D, I never thought in a million years that I would choose the FDUCE here. LOL!

Honestly, I don't think you'll be alone. That's why I love doing these! There ends up being big debates on what people think sounds best, and at the very least, it shows that budget shouldn't stop people from creating content.

Hahaha! A lot of people like how the FDUCE sounds, me included. Although, to me, it is by far the least transparent mic, almost sounding like it has a compressor already applied. Interesting budget mic for sure!

Did I hear a hissing sound in Rode XDM-100?
@NewLayer
@NewLayer 9 ай бұрын
I just checked the noise floor in my raw recordings, and the XDM-100 is right in the middle of all these as far as noise goes. The noise floor is around -62dB AFTER normalizing to -3dB, which is very low. One of the best parts of the XDM-100 is the Unify software, so once you apply some REALLY subtle noise reduction/noise gating, the noise floor will be as low as it can possibly get. You have 0 to worry about as far as noise goes from the XDM-100!

Great video! Man so I did pick mic A but wow that FDUCE was a really close pick for me. For $40 and it looking so nice would be a great pick for people. I would like to see you compare the Shure Beta 58 (I have one of you lived near me lol) for the dynamic mics and of course you have to do the SM7.

A lot of people like the FDUCE for the price, including me! To me it sounds the least transparent, like it has a lot of low and high end boost + compression somehow, so definitely not for everyone, but hard to argue that you can't get a good sounding mic under $50 after hearing it.
